Rommel had the upper hand, but according to Stirling, he had left himself vulnerable; his lines of communication and airfields along the coast were crying out to be attacked. Once on an airfield, Stirling and his men planted Lewes bombs underneath the wings in the shadows of each Bf-109 fighter. They were set with ten-minute time delay fuses. After six bombs had been planted, the Italians finally realised they were under attack and started to fire rounds off in all directions. However, none of them actually effective as the SAS escaped back into the darkness of the desert. What the SAS did during World War Two was to revolutionize the way wars could be fought. What was learnt in those early years of the SAS, proved invaluable for setting up techniques and tactics that are still relevant today. David Stirling’s thoughts were to throw out standard military tactics – the SAS was trained to use improvisation rather than follow set military doctrine. At the same time Jock Lewes had similar thoughts to Stirling before joining Stirling in his venture. Stirling Work tells the fascinating and true story of the SAS from its inception in the Libyan Desert to the end of the War in Europe when the SAS did indeed do some sterling work.

South Fayette Township was created in 1842. Located 12 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, what is today known as Pittsburghs Best-Kept Secret includes the populations of seven community zip codes. Originally, mining was the townships primary industry, as it is located on some of the richest bituminous coal reserves in the state. Thousands of barrels of oil used to be produced daily. Cemeteries contain memorials to Revolutionary and Civil War veterans as well as the two world wars. The legendary Mike Fink (of Disney World fame) was born here in Sturgeon. Some agricultural farms and horse/riding facilities still dot the hilly countryside among the many new housing developments. The township has a great soccer history and an ever-expanding excellent school district, one of seven in Allegheny County named among Americas most challenging schools by the Washington Post. Today, South Fayette Township maintains a rural feel with a motto of A great place to live, work and play.

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of Nightingale's life and work written by contemporaries, as well as Florence herself *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “I think one's feelings waste themselves in words; they ought all to be distilled into actions which bring results.” – Florence Nightingale Today, nursing is one of the most ubiquitous professions in the world, and images of war immediately call to mind nursing the wounded, but it was not long ago that such ideas were relatively primitive. Indeed, schoolchildren are still taught about the revolutionary exploits of Florence Nightingale, the war nurse who is often credited as the founder of modern nursing. As The Times wrote of Nightingale, “She is a ‘ministering angel’ without any exaggeration in these hospitals, and as her slender form glides quietly along each corridor, every poor fellow's face softens with gratitude at the sight of her. When all the medical officers have retired for the night and silence and darkness have settled down upon those miles of prostrate sick, she may be observed alone, with a little lamp in her hand, making her solitary rounds.” Florence Nightingale first came to prominence during the Crimean War in the middle of the 19th century when she helped organize efforts to treat wounded soldiers, and the image of her doing rounds among those she treated at night became extremely popular in Europe, but her efforts extended far beyond the scope of battle. In time, she came to found the first secular nursing school, at St Thomas' Hospital in London, and with that she began to transform nursing into an actual profession. Perhaps not surprisingly, in conjunction with nursing, Nightingale was a social reformer who advocated for the advancement of women in all areas of life, from healthcare to poverty, and she bolstered her work with voluminous writings on behalf of her causes. Florence Nightingale: The Life and Legacy of the Most Famous Nurse in History chronicles one of the most famous women of the 19th century. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Florence Nightingale like never before.

Peter Oliver was the last chief justice of the Massachusetts court system prior to the start of the American Revolution. An ardent pro-British Loyalist (aka Tory), Oliver was a member of the socially elite political circle that was about to be displaced. He left Boston along with a thousand other Loyalists in March of 1776 and spent the last fifteen years of his life in England. During his exile he wrote an account of his experiences during the Revolutionary times, offering a biting and insightful perspective on the leading Patriot figures, almost all of whom he new well. History is truly written by the victors and this book attempts to give the perspective of the Loyalists, the "losers" of the American Revolution, through the experiences of this most interesting man.

By Thomas Cirignano I just finished author Louis Garafalo's new release, "Peter Oliver: the Loyalist Perspective on the American Revolution". Normally it takes me a while to finish a book, but I kept reading into the wee-hours of the morning because it was so interesting. Little has been written about the Loyalist's perspective of this historic time, and how it affected their lives, families, and fortunes. In history, the winner's perspective is what usually gets most of the attention. Being a New England-er, I found this book fascinating. Garafalo certainly did an immense amount of research. The progression of events and details gathered directly from the personal diaries of many historical figures drew me right into the story, making me feel as if I knew John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Peter Oliver, and others, personally. Well done!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Don't waste your time. By Amazon Customer Very poorly researched and written. Most chapters are less than ten pages in length and consist of quotes from other secondary sources. The accounts describing the "Battle of Boston" (i.e. Dorchester Heights) are unsourced and closer to fiction than reality. To date, I have been unable to identify one Loyalist/British Officer identified by the author only as a "Major Tarpley". As a result, I am forced to question whether this officer even existed. Casualty accounts for the "Battle of Boston" are also unsourced and highly dubious. The book lacks an index and is almost completely reliant upon secondary sources instead of primary sources. If you want a more accurate account of the Loyalist plight in Boston, I would recommend any primary sources available on Amazon.

623 Squadron was one of many units that operated for a brief period as part of Bomber Command in the Second World War. Formed with seven crews from 218 (Gold Coast) Squadron in August 1943 its service life was only five months but its contribution, and the sacrifice of its crews, was considerable. Over the course of 139 sorties its Short Stirlings dropped 120 tons of bombs along with 65 tons of mines at a cost of nine aircraft lost in action and a further two in accidents or crashing on return to base. 46 members of the squadron gave their lives in the cause of our freedom before the squadron was disbanded in December the same year. Falling victim to the withdrawal of the Short Stirling from bombing operations over Germany, the life of the unit was so short that there was not even time for a squadron badge to be granted. A Short War combines the operational history of the unit with the personal stories of many who served with the unit. It is illustrated with contemporary photographs, many of which have never previously been published. This is the definitive history of 623 Squadron, its people and aircraft.

With its charismatic leader George Custer and its memorable encounters with Plains Indians, including the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Seventh Cavalry serves as the iconic regiment in the post–Civil War U.S Army. Voluminous written documentation as well as archaeological and osteological research suggest that the soldiers of the Seventh represented a cross section of the men who joined the army as a whole at the time. In Health of the Seventh Cavalry, editors P. Willey and Douglas D. Scott and their co-contributors—experts in history, medicine, human biology, epidemiology, and human osteology—examine the Seventh’s medical records to determine the health of the nineteenth-century U.S. Army, and the prevalence and treatment of the numerous conditions that plagued soldiers during the Indian Wars. Building on previous comparisons of archaeological evidence and medical records, Willey and Scott follow multiple lines of inquiry to assess the health of the Seventh, from its organization in 1866 to its 1884 station on the Northern Great Plains. Pairing general overviews of nineteenth- and twentieth-century health care with essays on malaria, injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other specific ailments, Health of the Seventh Cavalry provides fresh insights into the health, disease, and trauma that the regiment experienced over two decades. More than 100 tables, graphs, and maps track the troops’ illnesses and diseases by month, season, year, and location, as well as their stress periods, desertions, and deaths. A glossary of medical terms rounds out the volume. As an ideal exemplar of regiments of its time, the Seventh Cavalry affords scholars and enthusiasts a better understanding of nineteenth-century health and medicine. This volume reveals the struggles that the post–Civil War Seventh, and the entire U.S. Army, faced on the battlefield and elsewhere.

Health of the Seventh Cavalry: A Medical HistoryFrom University of Oklahoma Press

Review “Doug Scott, P. Willey, and their contributors present a remarkable scholarly assessment skillfully gleaned from primary sources and presented in broad historical and medical context. What emerges is a rich historical interpretation of the health of Custer’s Seventh Cavalry—and by extension that of the post–Civil War U.S. Army.”—Douglas H. Ubelaker, forensic anthropologist and author of Human Skeletal Remains: Excavation, Analysis, Interpretation“Health of the Seventh Cavalry is an important contribution to the history of military medicine. Through the lens of the Seventh Cavalry’s records, the authors provide a much-needed perspective on post–Civil War U.S. Army medical practice.” —Brian Spatola, forensic anthropologist and Anatomical Collections Manager, National Museum of Health and Medicine“Douglas D. Scott and P. Willey, assisted by an impressive array of medical experts, have carefully gathered all the health records of the Seventh Cavalry across a decade and a half of the Seventh’s deployments and activities. It is rare to have such an extensive body of nineteenth-century medical records so well surveyed and expertly interpreted. The result is a marvelous study in epidemiology and medical history.” —James S. Brust, M.D., coauthor of Where Custer Fell: Photographs of the Little Bighorn Battlefield Then and Now

About the Author P. Willey is Professor of Anthropology at Chico State, and co-author with Douglas D. Scott of They Died with Custer: Soldiers’ Bones from the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

Douglas D. Scott is retired as supervisory archaeologist, Midwest Archeological Center, National Park Service. Widely known as an expert on military archaeology, he is the author or co-author of numerous publications, including They Died with Custer: Soldiers' Bones from the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Uncovering History: Archaeological Investigations at the Little Bighorn, and Custer, Cody, and Grand Duke Alexis: Historical Archaeology of the Royal Buffalo Hunt.

I'm a writer and researcher on the Little Big Horn, and from what I read before I thought most of their health problems were caused by a poor diet and injuries from horseback riding and Indian Fighting. This book is very well written and is extensively researched from individual medical records. The only problem I had was that I'm math challenged, and the statistics explanations taxed my brain.

Much of what was in this book was in the movie and I found the book to give additional insights into the actual trial, the hangings and the wheeling and dealing that took place due to the political atmosphere and the desire to exact revenge on anyone that had a part in the Lincoln assassination. The only real problem I had was technical in that I purchased the "Illstrated" version for my Kindle but there were no illustrations, every word with "ll", as in "call" always dropped on of the "L's", etc. It was only .50 more but frustrating nevertheless.Otherwise while it was not a "tome" I found the book to be well done and captivating.

Author Ellen Osborn gives us a unique history of El Dorado County, California, beginning with the early days of the gold rush and the first conflicts with the Native American tribes of the region. Based on primary source documents, including the unpublished diary of one of the soldiers, this is the first account of the El Dorado Indian Wars told from the perspective of the men and women who lived it, natives and newcomers alike. This book also traces the evolution of California's Highway 50 from its beginning as the Native American trade trail that became a popular Gold Rush route and explains why it has come to be called one of the most storied and romantic roads in American history. Most importantly, Osborn shares the story of the her great grandfather, John Calhoun Johnson and the world he lived in as emigrants poured into California, seeking promises of riches and following their own dreams of a new life.

Read Ebook Lucretia Borgia: According to Original Documents and Correspondence of Her Day, by Ferdinand Gregorovius

Lucretia Borgia is the most unfortunate woman in modern history. Is this because she was guilty of the most hideous crimes, or is it simply because she has been unjustly condemned by the world to bear its curse? The question has never been answered. Mankind is ever ready to discover the personification of human virtues and human vices in certain typical characters found in history and fable.

The Borgias will never cease to fascinate the historian and the psychologist. An intelligent friend of mine once asked me why it was that everything about Alexander VI, Cæsar, and Lucretia Borgia, every little fact regarding their lives, every newly discovered letter of any of them, aroused our interest much more than did anything similar concerning other and vastly more important historic characters. I know of no better explanation than the following: the Borgias had for background the Christian Church; they made their first appearance issuing from it; they used it for their advancement; and the sharp contrast of their conduct with the holy state makes them appear altogether fiendish. The Borgias are a satire on a great form or phase of religion, debasing and destroying it. They stand on high pedestals, and from their presence radiates the light of the Christian ideal. In this form we behold and recognize them. We view their acts through a medium which is permeated with religious ideas. Without this, and placed on a purely secular stage, the Borgias would have fallen into a position much less conspicuous than that of many other men, and would soon have ceased to be anything more than representatives of a large species.

Too bad one has to wade through the author's antipathy for his subject, though by the end of the book he seems to have a grudging respect for her. The author allowed his subjects to reveal themselves, his continual commentary was unneeded and a distraction.

J.I. Packer, theologian and author of "Knowing God" called Richard Baxter "the most outstanding pastor, evangelist and writer on practical and devotional themes that Puritanism produced." Reflecting on the life of Baxter, John Wilkins, bishop of Chester concluded, "if he had lived in the primitive time he had been one of the fathers of the church." He was a best-selling author, evangelist and statesman, yet he considered the pastoral ministry the highest calling anyone could aspire to. When George Whitefield, the eighteenth century Methodist evangelist, passed through Baxter's rural parish a century after his death, he noted the lingering "sweet savor of good Mr. Baxter's doctrine, works and discipline." What transformed this country pastor with little formal education or training into one of the most effective and fruitful Christian leaders of all time? Good Mr. Baxter offers examples, insights and wisdom from the life and death of Richard Baxter to spur on contemporary leaders to energetic, practical, Gospel-centered ministry in the Church.

Review "Good Mr. Baxter. How very well you have profiled him!" J.I. Packer, theologian and author of Knowing God"This short biography of only just over 100 pages does an excellent job of introducing the great Puritan pastor and writer Richard Baxter. As any short biography ought to do, this one led me hoping to find a much longer treatment of the life of this fascinating character." - Tim Challies, challies.com

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Great Introduction to a Key Puritan Writer By Ben House Some people are fascinated by the mythical Lost World of Atlantis. The whole idea of a lost world or civilization makes for great adventure stories. But in history, there are lost worlds. The rediscovery of such worlds is adventurous. Those who enter such worlds come back to this world with tales of delight. There really are lost worlds. One such lost world was the World of Puritanism. We knew it existed. We were told that they wore funny hats, burned witches, oppressed free thought, and threw everything off in England and America for a season. That whole sentence represents a myth. The rediscovery of the Puritans in the middle to late 20th centuries is a fascinating story. I am sure it is more complicated than this, but I usually associate with 2 men, neither of whom had much in common. One was the American historian Perry Miller of Harvard College. He began his quest of studying the American Puritans and encouraging his graduate students to do so also. Other historians thought Miller was trekking off on an empty quest. Miller wrote a whole series of scholarly works on the Puritans. Miller was not a Christian and had no spiritual motivation for studying Puritanism. He was a historian studying ideas. But his labors spurred others, both believers and secular historians, to continue Puritan studies. The other person was the British preacher Martyn Lloyd-Jones. Along with such men as Iain Murray, J. I. Packer, and S M. Houghton, Lloyd-Jones envisioned revival in Britain and the English speaking world as a real need. Basic to the vision was an emphasis on preaching the Bible in an expository manner and proclaiming sound doctrine. Alongside those components, they all longed to see good solid books in the hands of pastors and Christian laymen. They longed to see old Christian classics reprinted. Such a quest led them quickly to the reprinting of great Puritan works.Puritan tomes and scholarly works on Puritans began being republished or printed. Very quickly, the impulse from the Christian community exceeded that of the university scholars. There was some, by the way, who wore both hats. By the 1970s, the Puritan book revival was becoming a flood. Many of the Puritan books were not being retyped and reset, but were being photocopied and published in fonts and sizes as were the originals. Banner of Truth in Edinburgh, Scotland was the flagship for Puritan studies. But there were and are plenty of other publishers who were finding and printing the same kinds of books. The Puritan Revival was a corollary to the broader revival of Reformed theology. For English speaking and reading audiences, many of the best exemplars of Reformed theology were the Puritans and their direct heirs. The Puritan Revival continues. A whole lost world has been rediscovered. But, as many of you know, it is a vast, as well as rich world. The Puritans were extensive in their publishing and exhaustive in their treatment of Scripture and doctrine. Their books were not trimmed and edited with the goal of making them light and breezy. They mined the Word of God. By that, I mean that they dug deep into the doctrine and text. And they applied the doctrines in myriad details. Grace was a great gift. Understanding God’s grace was a life-long quest. There were no cute slogans or snappy choruses; rather, there was theological meat. The bulky size of many Puritans reprints, the theological assumptions of the authors, and the small print of the reprints all contributed to making new and beautiful reprinted volumes somewhat less useful and very daunting to many readers. Add to those problems, there were lots of Puritan writers (most of whom were pastors) and lots of Puritans books. What Puritans should I read? And, which of the Puritan books are most important? And where do I start?I will answer the last question posed above. Good Mr. Baxter is a great place to start on Puritan studies. Even if you have been reading the Puritans for a time, this short book is a great review or overview of one of the prime preachers and writers of the Puritan world.Baxter’s best know book is titled The Reformed Pastor. Baxter was not writing theory, but explaining his practices. He was the epitome of the good village parson who visited and watched over his flock. His other best known works were The Christian Directory, a nearly 1000 page compendium of Christian living, and The Saints Everlasting Rest. The advantage of Good Mr. Baxter is its brevity. The book consists of 13 chapters replete with quotes from Baxter. The book could be read through rather quickly; however, I think it is better suited for a daily devotional study. The book is especially useful for prompting pastors to read Baxter’s classic Reformed Pastor, but any Christian could benefit from reading the book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. EXCELLENT!!!! By Joel L. Good MR. Baxter is an encouragement to me as a pastor and teacher of the Word. I would recommend this book to any believer, whether in the ministry or not, simply because of it's focus on the heart of Christ. It inspired me to examine my own life and ministry, as well as deepen my longing to be used by God the way so many of the puritan pastors were. Before reading this book I knew very little of Richard Baxter, and though I know more now, I feel I have only just met him, and look forward to an expanded edition from Vance Salisbury in the near future. If you love the writings and characters of the puritan church age, then I'm positive you will enjoy this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Engaging, Enlightening, Encouraging By Susan Bauman Mr Salisbury has written an engaging biography about a less-known servant of the Lord. Richard Baxter's life and his commitment to ministry are inspiring enough, but Salisbury's insightful treatment of his trials, his faithfulness and his writings bring a dimension to Baxter's life that many might otherwise miss. I found myself encouraged to press on in ministry, in spite of trials or setbacks, knowing that the Lord uses faithful men such as Baxter and Salisbury to accomplish great things for the kingdom.

Earth Beings is the fruit of Marisol de la Cadena's decade-long conversations with Mariano and Nazario Turpo, father and son, runakuna or Quechua people. Concerned with the mutual entanglements of indigenous and nonindigenous worlds, and the partial connections between them, de la Cadena presents how the Turpos' indigenous ways of knowing and being include and exceed modern and nonmodern practices. Her discussion of indigenous political strategies—a realm that need not abide by binary logics—reconfigures how to think about and question modern politics, while pushing her readers to think beyond "hybridity" and toward translation, communication that accepts incommensurability, and mutual difference as conditions for ethnography to work.

Earth Beings: Ecologies of Practice across Andean Worlds (The Lewis Henry Morgan Lectures), by Marisol de la Cadena

Review "In response to its own subject, this is an extraordinary intervention in ethnography. Marisol de la Cadena writes not across genres—different perspectives on one entity—but in a way that allows different entities to emerge, and they're not 'genres' at all. Diverse narratives, conversations, and recollections can be read simultaneously as scholarly tools and as making present realities they can hardly contain. A highly courageous and, in personal terms, deeply moving book."  (Marilyn Strathern, Cambridge University)"Earth Beings is one of those books that emerge into the scholarly domain once in a decade that crystallizes that decade's debates and rearticulates them in ways that open paths into new worlds." (Arturo Escobar, author of Territories of Difference: Place, Movements, Life, Redes)"It matters which stories tell stories. A leader in rethinking the partial connections and excessive entanglements of state and indigenous worlds in the Andes and beyond, Marisol de la Cadena writes stories that make this simple aphorism lively indeed. It matters which stories normalize other stories and which build the power in recursive retellings and reworkings to gnaw at the established order of things in vexed worlds. Especially when material stories are also told by earth others, exacting their reciprocal consequences on both state and indigenous human actors, what is at stake is not cultural diversity or epistemological relativism, but something much closer to worlding, to composing and decomposing some worlds and not others with unexpected partners. Earth Beings helps me rethink these matters through the churning of a mountain."  (Donna J. Haraway, author of When Species Meet)

About the Author Marisol de la Cadena is Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Davis, and the author of Indigenous Mestizos: The Politics of Race and Culture in Cuzco, Peru, 1919–1991, also published by Duke University Press.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Dry Dolly By VA Duck This book (116 pages) is an edition of the letters of Dolly Madison compiled by Mrs. Madison's Grand Niece, apparently of the same name as her subject. The structure of the book is: introductory sentences crafted by the editor, followed by one, often more, letters on the general topic of the introductory material. The letters included are both those written by Dolly Madison as well as those received.Short of the straightforward chronology - there is no other mechanism that binds the letters together and so the reader's attention is often left to wander. And, while Mrs. Madison was in many ways the 1st, "First Lady" in terms of Capital etiquette and protocol, the letters within this volume are rarely the topic of those elements that made up her influential and informative life. Additionally, the style of biography in the 19th century was "adoring" - often saccharine and overstated in style. An example (loc. 609): "During the eight years of her life as wife of the Secretary of State, she dispensed with a liberal hand and abundant wealth she prized so little, and the poor of the District loved her name as that of a household deity." Impartiality has been, "dispensed with liberal hand" by Grand-Niece - and the reader, left to trek through that depth of adulation soon becomes... disoriented & fatigued.Still, there is much to like and admire; Dolly Madison was a woman deserving of admiration, and there IS an endearing quality within her letters. Two stars only, however, because the book will come off as, "lightweight" history to nearly all modern readers. There MAY BE important clues to the life of the Madisons hiding within these letters, but for most of us (certainly me) those clues are better presented by the deft hand of a historian rather than the fond sentiment of lineage. Not recommended - but not as a snub of Dolly, rather because of a 21st century-perception of an ineffective presentation.-----kindle edition-----A simple e-Book publication; there are no illustrations, page numbers are neglected, there are no notes, or index, or bibliography. There is an occasional odd formatting error of incorrect line-break, or font change for no apparent reason. Still the original is a simple format and the publisher BIG BYTE BOOKS presents it adequately in electronic-book format, ★★★☆☆, adequate.

On May 29, 1453, the ancient city of Constantinople, once capital of the Roman Empire, fell to the Ottoman Turks. Soon, the centuries-long order of the Middle Ages in Europe began to unravel: the armored knight on horseback ceased to inspire fear on the battlefield, stone castles no longer stopped an enemy's advance, and the pope in Rome found that half of Europe no longer accepted his teachings. European ships steered away from the familiar routes between the ports of their own continent, landing in the Americas, in India, and finally circling the world. New ideas about gaining knowledge by experiment and direct observation challenged medieval reliance on ancient authorities. Find out why in "The Day the World Changed".

Cameron Millar Daniel Carson's book, The Day the World Changed: May 29, 1453, is an excellent introductory text to the major geopolitical issues that largely determined the shape of the modern western world as we have come to understand it in these contemporary times in which we live. Complex and often seemingly disconnected historical narratives have been expertly brought together in a readily digestible, balanced, and easy-to-understand story that underscores the importance of various tumultous events in medieval history, without which the world as we know it may never have come into being. As a person who grew up in the British Isles, and who was subjected to oftentimes very complex studies of British and European history (often dealing with literally centuries-upon-centuries worth of events), without ever having truly understood the importance of outcomes of particular battles, treaties, or royal marriages, all I can say is I wish there had been books such as this one available to me at that time. It would have aided tremendously my understanding of how the modern world came to be shaped, and greatly accelerated my appreciation for the study of history in general, a subject for which I now harbor a great deal more enthusiasm than I did while still at school. The author takes the reader all the way from the economics and politics of Ancient Rome, up until the near-present day, all in 187 pages, in a very readable and comprehensible format. Daniel Carson clearly shows the importance to the development of the modern west on the fall in 1453 of Constantinople (now modern Istanbul) to the Ottoman Turks. More books such as this one would encourage a greater degree of interest in and appreciation for global history, as well as a realization that the development of our current modern world was in no small way dependent upon a quite large number of very precariously balanced events.

Easily Read Well Written Narrative History For The Non-Historian By James Blase The importance of the fall of Constantinople to the evolution of our current world is deftly explained by the author in this description of the related historical events. It is written for the non-historian in a narrative style that doesn't just list dates and battles; but gives us a feel for the times and the people that lived them. History can be dry and dusty to many people and hard to relate to; but this author gets us in touch with the people that lived our ancient history, sprinkling his narrative with humor and a personal touch. It was an easy read, has many illustrations, and contains pictures of many of the places mentioned, some of which were taken by the author himself. I don't read many books on history; but this one was entertaining and informative, and by the end convinced me that, yes, indeed, the world did change on May 29, 1453.

Witty and easy to read By Austin This book is great for the layman - Dan does a great job of pulling together resources and putting them in a context that is simple to understand. He includes enough detail to support his points without boring the reader and interweaves his wit and personal background in to the story such that it emits a very unique tone that makes the subject pop. The content is focused well enough on the fall of Constantinople to exclude superfluous information but includes enough background and world events that it leaves the reader with a sense of robust knowledge about the time period. Dan - if you're taking suggestions, it would be great to read similar books on other periods (Goths, for example).

When you watch those stunning TV period dramas, do you ever wonder about the bits they DON'T show - where did the hero go for a 'comfort break'? How did the beautiful heroine clean her pearly-white teeth? How often did they take a bath, and what did they use for soap? This book tries to answer these questions and many more. While not written primarily for laughs, it takes a light-hearted look at aspects of human hygiene down the ages, and in a range of cultures across the world, including the author's personal experiences in countries as diverse as Japan and Iceland. The perfect book to sit reading in the little boys' (or girls') room!

A fascinating topic presented with dry humour, making it very readable By Dawn This book is an innovative combination of very well researched information and the author’s extensive well-travelled life experiences e.g. in Japan and China, where she has lived and integrated into the local cultures and whose languages she speaks. The author’s dry humour and unique personality jump out of the pages making what is potentially a dry topic enjoyable and very readable. The book covers a wide range of aspects of human hygiene. Apart from the bed bugs and toilets indicated in the book’s title, it covers topics such as bathing habits in different cultures past and present, tooth-care, sewage, water supply and head lice. And it spans a very wide historical and geographical range – from about 3000BC to the future, and countries as varied as the UK, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Italy and India. The way in which she sometimes puts the information into context by comparing one culture with another within a given time period is intriguing and very creative. After reading this book, I’ll never take my tap water or sit-down flush toilet for granted again.

Ms Poynter covers a vast range of “human hygiene” subjects; from toilets in 20th century Japan (how to turn a “squatter” into a “sitter”) to Pharaoh Rameses (famous as much for his blackheads as for his 170 children) and from Incan irrigation to modern hydroelectric dams. This could be considered to be an academic book (it is certainly extensively researched) but could almost be considered to be a travelogue – the number of countries where the author has “been to the Ladies” is astounding. The whole thing is presented with a light touch which makes it easy and fun to read even if some of the points raised (for example the hint of possible upcoming “water wars” – with nations and/or neighbours fighting over this precious resource) warrant serious reflection by any reader.

By ARG This book was rather charming little book on the questions you never think to ask about the past, but it is also rather idiosyncratic as the whims of the author, her travels, and acquaintances fill in a lot of her material. There are references after each chapter but this is still not very academic or systematic look at these things. Fun read with only a few editing problems that actually disrupted reading ease.
