Life Is Cheap In The Hands Of Hitler's Barbarians By Bill Emblom This book by author Rupert Butler is a fairly quick read (185 pages of text) revealing the barbarity of members of Hitler's Third Reich in carrying out executions of millions of individuals. Numerous photos of the infamous characters both in their heyday and death add to the book's interest. Incidents such as the assassination of The Butcher of Prague, Reinhard Heydrich, and the July, 1944 bomb plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler are given detailed attention. I'm sure the text of this book can be found in many other volumes, but the photos chosen for the book are exceptional. Examples are the sinister Heydrich cuddling his youngest daughter, the destruction of the village of Lidice in reprisal of the death of Heydrich, Judge Roland Freisler showering venom onto a pathetic defendant at the People's Court, the ruins of the inside of the conference room at Rastenburg following the attempt on Hitler's life, close up pictures of Hitler's henchmen, some of them shown in death, and the ruins inside Hitler's bunker. These and many other photos make this book a keeper in the library of World War II buffs.

12 of 14 people found the following review helpful. A solid work on the dreaded Gestapo. By Jack Stone This is an excellent book which reads easily and never bores. The format of the book is well thought out, with many pictures, quotes, and sub-stories. The author's writing style is engaging and I could not put the book down once I started. The book's main focus is on the leading figures of the Gestapo to include Goring, Himmler, Heydrich and Kaltenbrunner and on the interagency politics between the Abwehr, SD, SS, and the Wehrmacht. Butler certainly pulls no punches, revealing the brutality of the Gestapo and the depravity of the mass murderers who led this twisted organization. While this book is well done, it is not an authoritative work and does not address Gestapo activities in areas such as the eastern front, the Baltics, and the Balkans. However, what the book does cover, it covers well. If you want a solid foundation on the Gestapo's activities in WWII then this is the book for you. I am glad I bought it and will retain it in my collection.

Picture book, not a history By Navy Rupert Butler basically compiled a bunch of photos, added a little commentary about key members of the organization and said this was a history. This is not in fact a book about the Gestapo, but a group of biographical episodes tied together with a few events. There is not a single organizational chart or information on ranks, training, equipment - things normally associated with an organization. He provides some information of operations and then rapidly moves towards a conclusion with the end of the war and the trials for war crimes. Very disappointed.

Was I ever wrong. I don't want to put it down. So far, a beautiful book revealing facts that are new to me, and I am from his era.

Excerpt from Dunham Genealogy: English and American Branches of the Dunham FamilyHow strange a coincident in time, that I, in my eightieth year, am permitted to finish a work in honor of my kinsmen, at the same age our worthy ancestor, Deacon John Dunham, of Plymouth, had completed his labors for the benefit of his descendants.In the preparation of this work I have found the task of grave responsibility and through the many years in which I have been employed in the compilation of records of the family there has been a continuous struggle. State, county, town, court, church and family records had to be searched to verify dates obtained through correspondence. Discussions with many on disputed questions arose from different versions of the same subject or conflicting records to such an extent that I was compelled to assume an independent position, and in doing so I may have erred in judgment. In the early history of the family in this country there was a marked tendency among the younger members of the families to leave the paternal roof and to seek new regions and become self-supporting and independent. In the choice of these homes they were very differently inclined, some preferring to live in the more populated sections where their family records were well preserved while others, with heartless consideration for a future genealogist, migrated to remote parts of the country where the records of their respective families were not as well kept. As a result of this latter migration much confusion has arisen in the writing and compiling a history of the family.Attempts have been made to write a history of the family in different sections of the country, but this method has not met with success, as the records in these instances have been necessarily limited and not retrospective. In the preparation of this work the compiler has had access to the most reliable students in Dunham history and the latter have generously placed the results of their researches in his hands.It is not claimed that this work is beyond criticism. In 1884, Malie Monroe Jackson began and named a canal Buckeye in honor of his native state, Ohio, the Buckeye state. In 1886, Thomas Newton Clanton added 10 miles to the canal. The following year, he applied for a post office, and on March 10, 1888, the post office, named Buckeye, was established. Clanton platted a townsite and named the town Sidney, though why he chose that name remains a mystery. Beginning in 1910, advances in transportation put the community on the map, and Sidney became Buckeye. Hugh Watson, founder of the Buckeye Valley Bank, became the towns first mayor in 1929. On January 1, 2014, Buckeye became the newest city in Arizona. This newest volume also celebrates todays Buckeye settlers, such as Levi Beard, Tony Youngker, Clemie Arnold, and Bob Doster, DVM, updating Buckeyes colorful history of notable residents.

Colyer's book is comprised of numerous photos not contained in the 1976 book. I think my parent's 1956 Buick is shown on page 80. I am going to have to research it. I just flipped through Colyer's book and I like what I see. The author has put a lot of time collecting the photos. I loved living in Fircrest in as a child in those days. Once in awhile I drive my 1964 Buick Wildcat Sport Coupe around Fircrest as a trip down memory lane. Fircrest has not really changed that much since the mid 50s! The author has done a fine job of documenting new material for his history book. I want to thank Colyer for taking the time to write his book! I no longer live in Fircrest but have fond memories living there between age 7 & 11. It seems to still be a wonderful community to live in. I attended Wainwright elementary from kindergarten through the first semester of 4th grade. I lived at 908 Daniels Drive, the first resident.I think books like this one could be made even better if the author solicited family photos which really show more about life in those days. Popular Protest in Palestine provides an overview and analysis of the role and significance of unarmed civil (popular) resistance in the Palestinian national movement. The main focus is on the contemporary popular resistance movement in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), but it is prefaced by a historical review of the thread of unarmed civil resistance that has run throughout the history of the Palestinian liberation struggle. It informs a contemporary readership about this under-emphasised dimension of the Palestinian struggle, arguing that at the present juncture the popular resistance movement, especially in the West Bank, is the most significant form of struggle against the ongoing occupation. Popular Protest in Palestine also addresses the international dimensions of the Palestinian struggle, focusing in particular on the BDS campaign, the role of international solidarity activists in the OPT and beyond, and the changing forms of engagement developed by international agencies seeking to work on the roots of the conflict whilst fulfilling their humanitarian aid mandates.

About the Author Marwan Darweish is Principal Lecturer in Peace Studies at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University. He has extensive experience in conflict transformation and peacebuilding across the Middle East region and internationally. He co-edited Peacebuilding and Reconciliation: Contemporary themes and challenges (Pluto 2012). Andrew Rigby is Emeritus Professor of Peace Studies, Coventry University where he was the founding director of the Centre for Peace & Reconciliation Studies. He is the author of 14 books covering various aspects of nonviolent theory and practice, uncluding Justice and Reconciliation: After the Violence (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 2001).

October 7, 2014. It has been 40 years this month I returned from Australia. Bob, Peter, Dennis and I still talk about all of our adventures and all the people we met in our travels. Its fun to laugh about how we each see events differently. The bond that is made from traveling would be similar to friends you would make attending a University or being part of a sports team. About the Author I am a retired carpenter living in Torrance, CA. I surfed from age 10 until I was 50, when I quit do to a construction accident. The idea for this book originated from my son who had heard many of these stories growing up and suggested I put them in print. I have stayed in close contact with many friends in Australia which has made this project rewarding and enjoyable.

Jahn's Ode to the Adventures of the Surfing Life By Kit Boise-Cossart The story of the trip us groms all wanted to take in the late 1960's from California to Australia but were too young, or too scared, to make the trip.Brain takes us with him on his adventures and some of the lessons learned. In the Aussie surf culture of the day he appreciated good friends (i.e. Peter Green), worked hard, and was extremely resourceful (I loved the chapter on the cement mixer contraption he worked with that almost killed him).Brian candidly tells of the mistakes made both in the surf and on land, how he survived, loved, forgave (not sure about Nat, ha!), and pushed on thru. And what I can tell - he's honest and tell it like it is (was). Brian did the right thing for his grandkids by leaving out some of the sketchier details, R rated, but not X!Don't miss this trip Down Under. A must read for any surfer craving to let go and live.

The story pulls you in and allows you to feel like you're there, but maybe it's because I wish I had had done something just like this when I was the Brian's age. Great read - great pics to go along with it!!!!

Excerpt from The Commentary of Dr. Zacharias Ursinus on the Heidelberg CatechismIn presenting the English Reader with a translation of the Theological Lectures of Dr. Ursinus, upon the Heidelberg Catechism, it is presumed no apology is necessary, at least as far as the German Reformed Church is concerned. Considering the character of Ursinus, his acknowledged ability, and relations to the whole Reformed interest it is a matter of great surprise, that some one has not long since been found to undertake the arduous and difficult task which we have very imperfectly accomplished. Many other works greatly inferior to this, have been favored with translations, whilst no pains have been spared to give them an extensive circulation, and yet no attempt has been made of late years to place these lectures in the hands of the English reader. And what is stranger still, is the fact that the name of Ursinus himself, than whom no one is more worthy of grateful and honorable recollection, is in a great measure unknown. We have, therefore, been led to undertake the difficult task of translating these lectures, being fully convinced that we shall in so doing contribute no little to the dissemination of sound theological views, and at the same time bring to favorable notice one whose memory deserves to be held in grateful recollection. The writings of Ursinus are well deserving of a place in every minister's library, by the side of the works of Luther, Melancthon, Zuingle, Calvin, and others of blessed memory, and will not suffer in the least by a comparison with them.The old English translation by Parry, made over two hundred years ago, is not only antiquated and unsuited to the taste of the modern English reader, but is also out of print, and not to be had except by the rarest chance. Few copies are to be found at the present day. Review of Dr. Ursinus's Commentary on the Heidelberg Catechism By Dana Petrarca This is not a criticism of the work itself, which is a superb example of Reformed confessional literature of the !6th century, but rather the reprint itself. The type is so light that it is practically unreadable. A reprint of an out-of-print older does not have to be so poor. Take for example the Puritan Paperbacks from Banner of Faith which are of a very dark and readable quality.

In December 1941, Japan attacked the British Empire and the United States, turning the European war that had raged since 1939 into a global conflict. For a few desperate months during early 1942, the Kiwis faced a deep crisis. Australia had its own threat to face. Britain was stretched to the utmost against Germany, and the United States — with millions still unemployed — took time to turn its huge industry to war production. Despite a heavy commitment to the European war, New Zealanders eventually fought the Japanese on land, sea and air, from Malaya to the Solomons and, finally, in Japanese home waters. Kiwis also contributed in many other ways, providing bases and recreation facilities for US forces, food for the whole campaign, even sending physicists to work on the atomic bomb project. This was not easy. New Zealand had heavy commitments in North Africa and Europe. Even after the crisis of 1942 had passed, the country struggled to find the resources to keep air force, navy and army operating in the Pacific. New Zealand’s land component was finally withdrawn in 1944 after ongoing manpower issues reached crisis point — an issue that soon became entwined with Pacific politics and New Zealand’s role in the war. This book focuses on the army contribution and the politics that surrounded it; but we must not undervalue New Zealand’s ongoing and long-term air and naval campaigns in theatre. The navy, in particular, took a front-line role from the beginning of the Pacific struggle in December 1941 to the very last actions of the war in August 1945.

By Westie There have been a lot of books on the Pacific War, but few on New Zealand’s part. Who could have guessed the lengths to which this tiny Pacific nation went to meet its obligations? This very neat read summarises the adventures of the ‘Kiwis’ on land, sea and in the air as they fought first to defend their homeland from a feared invasion, then joined the United States in the push through the Solomons, and they were there at the very end – joining the naval campaign off the Japanese homeland in mid-1945 that brought the war to its conclusion. It’s a great complement to other books on other aspects of the war and stands alone as a quick and accessible introduction to the New Zealand experience. Five stars.
