In the summer of 1955, early in the modern civil rights era, six African American golfers in Beaumont, Texas, began attacking the Jim Crow caste system when they filed a federal lawsuit for the right to play the municipal golf course. The golfers and their African American lawyers went to federal court and asked a conservative white Republican judge to render a decision that would not only integrate the local golf course but also set precedent for desegregation of other public facilities, as well.In Fair Ways, Beaumont native Robert J. Robertson chronicles three parallel stories that converged in this important case. He tells the story of the plaintiffs—avid golfers who had learned the game while working as caddies and waiters—and their young lawyers, recent graduates from Howard University law school, and the Republican judge just appointed to the bench by President Eisenhower. Would the judge apply the new principles of Brown v. Board of Education to the questions before him? Would he use federal judicial power to override state laws and outlaw local customs?Fair Ways gives an uncommonly vivid picture of racial segregation and the forces that brought about its end. Using public case papers, public records, newspapers, and oral histories, Robertson has recreated the scene in Beaumont on the eve of desegregation, describing in detail the parallel white and black communities that characterized the Jim Crow caste system. Through this account, the forces at work in the South—education, military experience, rising expectations, the NAACP, and the rule of law—are personified dramatically by the golfers, the lawyers, and the judge.

Review “. . . a wonderful story, rich with detail and local color and personality, that sheds an illuminating ray of light on one aspect of the story of desegregation, showing how the most unlikely persons can have a major impact on the important events of our lives. This is a book that local historians, historians of black experience, and those interested in the history of sport will all find indispensable. I have read every word of it and think it is a great read, an important story, and one that every Texan ought to know.”--John B. Boles, William P. Hobby Professor of History, Rice University (John B. Boles, William P. Hobby Professor of History, Rice University)“Mr. Robertson tells a story that cuts to the core of sport and society. It reminds us of how far we have come as Americans and the strides that golf has made in the last fifty years. From the unspeakable inequities of the mid-1900's to the unprejudiced times of today, Fair Ways tells the courageous journey to fairway-freedom blazed by six golfers from Texas.”--Jim Nantz, CBS Sports (Jim Nantz)“The book is carefully researched, extensively footnoted, and clearly written. It provides a fresh look at race and the struggle for civil rights in a medium sized Texas city.” --Southwestern Historical Quarterly (Southwestern Historical Quarterly)“This fine book by Robert J. Robertson is more than the story of the desegregation of public golf courses in Beaumont, Texas. It also provides a readable, captivating window into everyday life under the Jim Crow systems. Robertson’s thorough research and personal interviews conducted with principals involved in the desegregation of public recreational facilities in Beaumont, or their close associated, provides an account of how the early Civil Rights Movement operated at the grassroots level. . . . Fair Ways should be read by anyone interested in black golfing, the Civil Rights Movement, or race relations in Jim Crow, Texas.” --East Texas Historical Journal (East Texas Historical Journal)

About the Author Robert J. Robertson is a Beaumont businessman and community leader.  He teaches at Lamar University and has served as president of the Tyrrell Historical Library Association, Texas Gulf Historical Society, and the Beaumont History Conference.  Robertson is the author of numerous articles, and his earlier book, Her Majesty's Texans:  Two English Immigrants in Reconstruction Texas, was also published by Texas A&M University Press.

Quigg Robertson provides a compelling look at desegregation in Southeast Texas and its implication on the national scene. Robertson gives us an inside look at the impact of segregation in sports (golf in particular), politics and societies social values of the late 40s and early 50s. I especially appreciated the biographical sketches of the major players in the civil rights case. It is an element often lacking in general historical recounts. A view of history which shows how ordinary citizens can have a significant impact on important events in our lives. I recommend this to avid golfers to see how their sport was transformed by these events.Robertson knows his history and tells it through the lives of ordinary citizens. Excellent footnotes.A good companion book to this is "Life is So Good" by George Dawson and Richard Glaubman. A story that also has its roots in East Texas.

I also enjoyed revisiting Beaumont as I knew it then. A lot of smart, strong, and creative people made their mark on our city. The author did a great job.

Until we were given the ballot this practice prevailed. Now I can play at Crestwood GC on the fairways that I carried a bag 9 holes for 50 cents and 75 cents for 18 holes. This book describes why the politically democratic state is a mythical and illegitimate concept that does not and cannot work and why, without the corrective market feedback of profits and losses, this unstable, unmanageable, inefficient and authoritative social organization will cause its own demise. The Road to Freedom and the Demise of Nation States maps out an alternative path leading to a new contractual social organization based upon individual sovereignty and freedom. Under this natural government of decentralized economic democracy, individuals vote with their money ballot for the products and services they want, including protection and jurisprudence. The Road to Freedom constitutes an evolutionary continuation of the principles of individual sovereignty and freedom underlying the American Revolution, as expressed in the Declaration of Independence, leading to worldwide peace and prosperity.

By Ned Netterville I bought this book directly from the publisher in hardback at a lower price. It is, as the other reviewer says, a superb book. Amazon's description of the book is accurate. Goodbye nation state; hello individual libert5y.

By DICKRAN This outstanding and thought provoking book is a 'must-read' by anyone interested in individual sovereignty and freedom. It is very wellwritten and meticulously researched. If you are fed up with the current political democratic system of false alternatives, this book provides a true alternative social organization of economic democracy based upon contract rather than coercion. This alternative natural government provides for proprietary management of all government services. Definitely worth 5 stars!!!!!

In a journey 11-years in the making, Park takes the reader on an extensive holiday to over 30 countries, friendly and hostile, exotic and metropolitan, all infused with the pleasures of life as well as the dangers of the same. Park sets the scene as a young undergraduate army cadet in southern California in the hopes of becoming an army officer during the Global War on Terrorism in 2003. His travels begin with the obligatory university euro trip, backpacking alone in the lands of the old empires and enjoying the fruits of discovery, topping off with the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens, Greece.

After commissioning into the U.S. Army, Park is stationed in Germany and expands his discoveries in Europe and also finds himself serving in Iraq and Afghanistan on almost back-to-back deployments. When not deployed, Park makes the most of his time and enjoys many new exciting experiences to include Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany; new year’s celebrations in Amsterdam, London, and Edinburgh; and reunites with all old friends in Italy—just to name a few.

Returning stateside, Park deploys to Haiti with "Americas Guard of Honor", the 82nd Airborne Division, providing humanitarian assistance to an earthquake torn country. Park continues to expand his democratic empire by returning to Europe to run with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain; travels to Egypt to marvel at the great ancient pyramids; and treks the mystical Andes Mountains of Peru and Patagonia. Park then takes in the beauty and adrenaline pumping adventures of New Zealand and also meets family in Australia.

Pushing the limits, Park treks the awe-inspiring Himalayas, reaching spectacular heights and scenery during the harsh conditions of winter. Finally, he ends his travels enjoying the delicious tastes and exotic grandeur of India; forms everlasting friendships, and even succumbs to some peril in Indochina.

A must read for those who love a light-hearted look at life in France By FrenchVillageDiaries This is another funny instalment of life in rural France for UK comedian Ian, his wife Natalie and his family of misbehaving animals and growing boys. I would recommend reading Ian's first memoir A La Mod before reading this book. After six years of life in the Loire their plans are taking shape, but life never really goes to plan, especially when you find yourself amidst madness like gun wielding neighbours. In his uniquely humorous writing, Ian treats us to all the best bits of his life in France including; medical appointments, vet visits, school life, travelling mishaps and the mad locals. I laughed out loud a lot.For Ian, life is full of battles that have turned him into a real Mr Grumpy. He battles against a family determined to go against his wishes and add more animals, noise and chaos to his life. He battles against himself as he can’t help but miss the noise and chaos when work takes him away from home and then there is the age-old battle of the work/home life balance. Some people are never happy and I doubt peace will ever reign inside Ian’s head especially as his goats appear to have given him gout and his courgettes (zucchini) refuse to produce fruiting female flowers - ha ha ha!Living a similar life I can appreciate the issues behind the humour and while I may feel a bit sorry for poor Ian, his wife Natalie is the real hero of the book for me keeping family life ticking over no matter what is thrown her way. For those of us who love a light-hearted look at the good and the bad of family life in France this book is must read.I was sent a copy of this book by the publisher for an honest review.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Inspirational By reader Another wonderful example of an Englishman abroad, as the writer tries to keep some semblance of normality in his family’s life in the depths of rural France/ Amid the vicissitudes thrown up on all sides, he strides through the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune with the clenched jaw of an Englishman intent on getting things done. He has projects started to earn a living that don’t quite work, constant accident-oriented travels, health hazards, rapacious animals, cranky neighbours and the mockery of his own family to contend with, to name but a few of his problems. But he seems able to bat them off with that stoic, grumpy wit in that befits the tradition of the best of English travel writing, and we see him forging himself a life in France .Very amusing, and hugely enjoyable.

Air Superiority in World War II and Korea is a historical study from the Office of Air Force History. The Historical Program chose air superiority because it is a crucial first element in all air operations and because it seemed to be neglected by a military establishment that so quickly dominated enemy air forces in the last two wars. There is a need to know more about air superiority: what it means, when it is necessary, and how it can be achieved operationally when the airspace is contested. The careers of each of the participants in this book reveal a long association with air superiority -- the theories and operations.

His theory accounts for the various tendencies we see in religious as they begin with spiritual outbursts, become more elaborate and sophisticated, face back-to-the-beginnings fundamentalisms and purifications, split into factions and denominations, sometimes splitting into new religions altogether or into syncretisms, and eventually creating the cultural and religious space for a new spiritual vision. Sergeev shows familiarity with other theories of historical and social change but, as far as I can tell, his own theory is original and not derivative. He presents sufficient detail to justify his interpretations but not so much as to overwhelm the reader or obscure the basic outlines of the theory. It is the best overarching account of religious change I have seen. And the phenomena of religious reaction and advance, of splintering and conflict, is more relevant now than at any time since the Reformation. Highly recommended.

Olshin The author of this volume, a professor of religion and philosophy, has set himself an ambitious goal: to provide a comprehensive analysis of a pattern that he has observed in the lifetime of organized religions. This pattern is what Sergeev calls his “theory of religious cycles,” as he concludes that all the major religions go through a distinct set of cycles or phases: formative, orthodox, classical, reformist, critical, and post-critical. The author argues – convincingly, in this reviewer’s opinion – that traditional religions including Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, go through an essentially identical process, moving through all six stages over their long periods of evolution. This is an extremely important book in understanding that religions change or evolve according to a precise system of phases. Sergeev has argued clearly, too, that this evolution comes not from a simplistic “decline in faith”, but from a highly complex series of interactions between texts, traditions, and believers, and the forces of modernity and cultural change.

Thomas Prof. Sergeev's book offers a most useful schema for understanding aspects of religious development across human societies. His theory of religious cycles is both original and provocative in encompassing a commonality in the "normal" sequence of humanity's faith expressions in their social forms. The volume's second part discussion of the Baha'i religion as a more nascent religion serves to spotlight significant features of his six part religious cycle schema as applicable to a still developing significant faith tradition. I was also much taken with the interfacing of Enlightenment nonsectarian elements with Baha'i and other religious traditions' responses to the crisis of modernity. The book is highly recommended for its command of various faith traditions, its comprehensive discussion of the Baha'i, and, most especially, for pointing to the enduring but changing semantic power of religions in historical interaction with their world.

By matt breen Mike Donovan's knowledge and wit have both been equally impressive for a long time and its very cool and satisfying to have them both wind up in the same place...this book! A great comedian and historian. Recommended for fans of either!

I loved this book from the very funny Mike Donovan. A collection of informative and entertaining nuggets from the colonial era all the way through the Reagan administration, this is the perfect book for anyone who loves to laugh and learn a thing or two about the U.S. of A. that was likely overlooked in your high school history class. Broken up into short & punchy sections that provide the real deal on the oft forgotten chapters of American history, this is the perfect book for anyone who loves to laugh while learning things that will fuel dinner conversations and bring your team victories at bar trivia for years to come. It made me learn the term "pettifoggery" and I can't recommend it enough.

COMEDIAN Mike Donovan ... I was anxious and excited to read his book, "101 Stories of American History." It not only did _not_ disappoint ... it was a great read. As smart and dry as Mike's comedy can be, that wit is liberally infused into the stories ... sometimes via a quick embellishment to a story ... sometimes an infusion of comedy of the unexpected ... and sometimes not at all, for the mere fact that the pure gold of the history stands alone as satisfyingly humorous. Mike provides us a literal treasure trove of "Hey, I never knew that!!" stories, which have been assembled and streamlined extremely well, making for a both enlightening and highly entertaining way. I've already purchased a few more copies as gifts .... anyone with interest in American History will ADORE this book!!

"Australias own Band of Brothers" One of the shortest lived and most battle hardened of the 1st Australian Imperial Force’s battalions, the 47th was formed in Egypt in 1916 and disbanded two years later having suffered one of the highest casualty rates of any Australian unit. Their story is remarkable for many reasons. Dogged by command and discipline troubles and bled white by the desperate attrition battles of 1916 and 1917, they fought on against a determined and skilful enemy in battles where the fortunes of war seemed stacked against them at every turn. Not only did they have the misfortune to be called into some of the A.I.F.’s most costly campaigns, chance often found them in the worst places within those battles. Though their story is one of almost unrelieved tragedy, it is also story of remarkable courage, endurance and heroism. It is the story of the 1st A.I.F. itself – punished, beaten, sometimes reviled for their indiscipline, they fought on - fewer, leaner and harder - until final victory was won. And at its end, in an extraordinary gesture of mateship, the remnants of the 47th Battalion reunited. Having been scattered to other units after their disbandment, the survivors gathered in Belgium for one last photo together. Only 73 remained.

I rarely give books 5 stars but this went close. He shows the 47th warts and all and while he has a love of the subject he also slates the battalion when he fills they deserve it. Excellent read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Battalion of Brothers By John E. Larsen This is the latest addition to the long list of Australian regimental histories. It is also the first attempt to write the story of the 47th Battalion in WW1. In doing this, Deayton has made a refreshing shift in focus from the Bean dominated, often insider directed histories common to the genre. The author has purposely approached his task with Bean as an aid and tried to tell the story of the 47th principally through the other resources available. He was helped in this by two remarkable primary sources but his thorough investigation has revealed some controversies and even a question or two about Bean's history as well. On this score, this is a battalion history that is far more than a list of battles and a recounting of the deeds of medal winners. The 47th Battalion was formed after the Gallipoli campaign, when the AIF was being doubled in size to continue the war on the Western Front in France. Its nucleus was supplied by the hard fighting 15th Battalion and it shared its disposition of Tasmanians and Queenslanders. It became part of the 12th Brigade, of the 4th Australian Infantry Division. Deayton does an insightful job of pointing out how its formation was compromised at the outset. The new 47th appeared to receive less than its due of capable leaders. This had the effect of causing excessive casualties, which had a rolling effect on the battalion's ability to gain proficiency. The battalion's baptism of fire was at Poziers in August 1916. Its role was essentially to occupy ground that was under horrific shellfire. It cost the battalion 367 men. In the ensuing attack on Mouquet Farm, rain and mud and an incompetent battle plan saw even more disaster. Bean rated only Fromelles (5,533 casualties to the 5th Division in one night) as worse. Bullecourt followed in April 1917. Here the 12th Brigade gained the German trenches but was isolated and grievously counter-attacked. Over a thousand Australians were taken prisoner. There was then costly success at Messines and near obliteration at Passchendaele. The bookend to the 47th's story was the defence of Amiens at Dernacourt. It was a victory but again the 47th suffered huge casualties. It also suffered recriminations and disbandment.Through its 2 years of service the 47th experienced the whole gamut of the horror of trench warfare. Mud and horrific shelling, poor plans and command failures. The chaos of the trench-line often was matched by the chaos in the rear. While the British command is appropriately criticized, Deayton has revealed an astonishing number of failures by Australian commanders. There was poor staff work at division level, poor communication between brigades and battalions but also egos and recalcitrance that beggars belief. Too often attempts were made to hide these under overarching criticism of the British. It was uncomfortable but necessary myth busting.Deayton has done an excellent job here. It is remarkable achievement given the general dearth of sources. The battalion's war diary for instance was either barely touched or used for misdirection and propaganda. Even the two main collections (Imlay's and Gallaways) raise questions. Even so, meticulous research has allowed Deayton to give a very thorough account of some very confusing battles. This leads him to be critical of some and that is fair enough. It also leads him to be full of praise for the bulk of the men who endured and persevered in extraordinary deadly circumstances. How the survivors of each bloodbath could go back again, I have no idea. Finally, Deayton reveals the face of these incredible men. Sure, some through the court-martials and Inquiries but many more through their valorous deeds. Sadly, some also through the pained letters written by mourning parents and wives. When I first picked this book up I noted the blurb `Australia's own Band of Brothers'. I expected I would dispute this but given the bad luck and bad leadership at various levels, the men of this battalion still performed commendably and with great pride in their unit. It comes through in the sources and in their dogged willingness to return to the fray. Peter Stanley calls the book `enjoyable', which also raised my eye-brow. Yet it is. It is an often painful story but the research and the analysis and particularly the stories of those remarkable men, is absolutely fascinating. A superb effort!

This is his first book and what a great achievement it is as well. I really loved this book, it’s a great story of ordinary men thrust into one of the worst wars known to man.The author presents the good and the bad about the men who served in the 47th Battalion, 1st Australian Imperial Force. We read about those ordinary men who carried out great acts of bravery and were never recognised for their efforts but we also read about the cowards, maligerers and deserters. This is the story of ordinary men thrown into the malestroem of the Western Front and who fought in some of the hardest and toughest battles along that line including; Pozieres, Mouquet Farm, Bullecourt, Messines, Passchendaele and Dernancourt. At the end of the war the remaining soldiers of the 47th gathered for one final photograph, only 73 men were left. (a battalion of that period was normally around 1000 men). This is a great unit history and anyone who enjoys reading about the Great War should enjoy this book. In closing I’d like to add the review below from a well-respected Australian historian:“Battle Scarred is surely the finest battalion history I have ever read… Craig Deayton has written a superb evocation and analysis of the life of one of the less celebrated of the AIF’s infantry battalions. This is no flattering hagiography full of derring-do, but an honest, critical, but still sympathetic, portrait of a run-of-the mill AIF battalion. Highly readable and richly descriptive both of the 47th’s men and their actions, it helps to explain not just what the AIF did on the Western Front, but what it was like for those involved, and why the AIF’s part in that terrible war remains such a profound part of Australian memory so long after.” - Dr. Peter Stanley Australia’s leading military historian
