A social history of a street which was occupied for over 250 years by a predominantly protestant population of English settlers. At one time a vibrant part of town filled with malt houses, tanneries, shoemakers, harness makers and publicans, a major transformation took place from the 1700s onwards as industry moved to other areas and the street became primarily residential. The study focuses on the families who lived and worked in the area. It is intended as a useful tool for those researching their ancestors who came from Bandon.

During the nineteenth century there was a huge increase in the level and types of gambling in Thailand. Taxes on gambling became a major source of state revenue, with the government establishing state-run lotteries and casinos in the first half of the twentieth century. Nevertheless, over the same period, a strong anti-gambling discourse emerged within the Thai elite, which sought to regulate gambling through a series of increasingly restrictive and punitive laws. By the mid-twentieth century, most forms of gambling had been made illegal, a situation that persists until today. This historical study, based on a wide variety of Thai- and English-language archival sources including government reports, legal cases and newspapers, places the criminalization of gambling in Thailand in the broader context of the country’s socio-economic transformation and the modernization of the Thai state. Particular attention is paid to how state institutions, such as the police and judiciary, and different sections of Thai society shaped and subverted the law to advance their own interests. Finally, the book compares the Thai government’s policies on gambling with those on opium use and prostitution, placing the latter in the context of an international clampdown on vice in the early twentieth century.

Review "The role of gambling in Southeast Asian history has attracted far less scholarly attention than its sister vices – opium and prostitution – and James Warren’s book, Gambling, the State and Society in Thailand, is a big step towards addressing this gap. Broad in scope and detailed in analysis, the book pries open the complex relationships between gambling and the modernisation of Thailand in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries."Kah-Wee Lee, TRaNS: Trans -Regional and -National Studies of Southeast Asia, May 2015

‘One loses all sense of time here. The battles for the last positions before Alexandria are hard. Was several days in the front line and lived in the car or hole in the ground. Enemy air force gave us trouble. Nonetheless I hope to succeed.’ In this compelling book, Erwin Rommel – one of the most successful commanders of World War II, and certainly the most well-known – writes about his views on the philosophy of warfare, battles, leaders, and the progress of both world wars. A complete picture of how a military genius grappled with war is presented through Rommel’s accounts of his experiences as a soldier in World War I, and through translated extracts from letters, orders and the narratives of daily action in World War II that he dictated each evening. The commentary by Dr John Pimlott sets Rommel’s words in context, describing the background to the general’s ideas and explaining how his plans were affected and altered by external circumstances. The result is an outstanding objective insight into Rommel’s military career, illustrated with photographs, many of which were taken by Rommel himself.REVIEWS ‘An extraordinary book by an extraordinary military strategist, expertly annotated by the editor, and containing many fascinating photographs. A very special contribution to the literature of WWII.Books Monthly UK While experts may struggle to find new information here, there is still plenty available to make it an enjoyable and worthwhile read, giving all readers access to the inner workings of one of the greatest generals of World War II. The Easter Rising of 1916 was a seminal moment in Ireland's turbulent history. What did the men and women who fought on the streets of Dublin endure during those brutal days after the clock struck on 24 April 1916? For them, the conflict was a mix of bloody fighting and energy-sapping waiting, with meager supplies of food and water, little chance to rest, and the terror of imminent attacks. This account of the major engagements of Easter Week 1916 takes us onto the shelled and bullet-ridden streets of Dublin with the foot soldiers on both sides of the conflict, into the collapsing buildings and through the gun smoke.
