Maori soldiers signing up for the First World War representing a formidable fighting force – Te Hokowhitu a Tu, or the Seventy twice-told warriors of the war god, Tumatauenga. Some 2,227 Maori and 458 Pacific Islanders enlisted with the Maori Pioneer Battalion, providing an essential element in the New Zealand Division’s fighting effort, and earning a reputation for bravery and dependability in France, Flanders and beyond. Prejudice kept the Maori Pioneer Battalion well back from the front lines as support troops, but their war efforts won them rights as full citizens of their homelands. Drawing on rare archival material and previously unpublished diaries and letters, Te Hokowhitu a Tu is the authoritative account of Maori and Pacific Islanders in the First World War, and balances the wider story of the Pioneer Battalion’s exploits with a portrait of daily life for soldiers who labored not only against the enemy but also racism behind their own lines. It includes numerous photographs and a full list of those who fought with the Battalion.

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin by Erik Larson explores several crucial years in Berlin through the eyes of the US ambassador and his family. Their experiences serve as both a cautionary tale about the insidiousness of evil and a harbinger of the hard realization that the rest of America was forced to make in a few short years.

In 1933, George Messersmith, US Consul General in Berlin, awaited the naming of a new ambassador amid increasing brutality, fanaticism, and corruption under the Nazi regime. Messersmith was frustrated that no one back home realized how bad it was. Most US officials figured that Adolf Hitler would become more moderate over time. Their chief concern was getting Germany to pay back $1.2 billion owed to US bond holders in the aftermath of World War I. Hitler talked of paying, but Messersmith thought he was just buying time to re-arm Germany…

Ray In the Garden of Beasts: by Erik Larson/Summary & Analysis by Instaread is a review of Larson’s account of the experiences of Ambassador William Dodd and his family in Hitler’s Germany in the 1930s just before the outbreak of World War II.A fairly good overview of a book about an interesting episode in US diplomatic history, with a good analysis of the author’s style, but it does not live up to the standards that I’ve come to expect in Instaread books. For one thing, in the opening, it mentions that the book is about life in Berlin through the eyes of the American ambassador and his family, without naming them, and then in the next paragraph brings up George Messersmith, who was the US consul general in Berlin. Later in the review this is explained, but it confuses the reader to have to wait for this explanation. Would have been better to make it clear up front.Later in the book there’s a bit of confusion that is never explained. It mentions the death of Mattie (the name of the ambassador’s daughter) in 1939, and then a couple of paragraphs later, after detailing her marriages, says that she died in 1990. While I’m sure the first death mentioned was actually Dodd’s wife (whose name, by the way, was not Mattie), meaning this is just an inadvertent typo, it is nonetheless very confusing.Beyond these two problems, it is a good review that I feel captures the full book’s essence effectively.

It provides a potential reader enough information regarding this book’s content to determine if we want to invest the extra money and time to actually buy and read the entire book. Though many people are beginning to claim they are personally getting boringly tired of the unending litany of books and movies dealing with the 75 year old Hitlerian genocide, this book is one of the newest entries. In the interim there have been many/many equally horrific genocides committed by Stalin, Mao, The Cambodian Communists, African, N Korean, Mideast and S. American dictator/monsters. Why do so few ever write about them? As an avid reader I have personally found “Instaread” to be a very helpful and valuable service.

HOWEVER this Instaread summary (think DETAILED review) gives you much of the facts in a short (20-30 minutes) period of time.William Dodd, wife Martha, daughter Mattie (24) and son Bill, Jr. landed in Germany in 1933. Dodd was the newly appointed US ambassador. Mattie, waiting for a divorce, was "quite" fond of the men resulting in some interesting liaisons. Would people back in the US listen to Dodd's concerns? Instaread states that Mattie died in 1939 but I think they mean Martha as Mattie died in 1990. Otherwise a very interesting summary at the beginning of the book before beginning to delve into some more detail regarding the characters. What are the themes found in the original book? The New Normal * Characters as Symbols * Car Culture * Intersection of Art and RealityInstaread says that some of the characters feel flat due to the author using "only the historical record for dialogue". Of course that ensures that it is truly non-fiction. From reading this summary, the two main characters appear to be Dodd and his daughter, Mattie.Need to grab the gyst of what this book is about but don't have time to read the original? Then this is for you! You will get the majority of the spoilers without the lengthy detail. Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz

When Governor Terry Sanford established the North Carolina Fund in 1963, he saw it as a way to provide a better life for the "tens of thousands whose family income is so low that daily subsistence is always in doubt." Illustrated with evocative photographs by Billy Barnes, To Right These Wrongs offers a lively account of this pioneering effort in America's War on Poverty. Robert Korstad and James Leloudis describe how the Fund's initial successes grew out of its reliance on private philanthropy and federal dollars and its commitment to the democratic mobilization of the poor. Both were calculated tactics designed to outflank conservative state lawmakers and entrenched local interests that nourished Jim Crow, perpetuated one-party politics, and protected an economy built on cheap labor. By late 1968, when the Fund closed its doors, a resurgent politics of race had gained the advantage, led by a Republican Party that had reorganized itself around opposition to civil rights and aid to the poor. The North Carolina Fund came up short in its battle against poverty, but its story continues to be a source of inspiration and instruction for new generations of Americans.

The strength of this book lies . . . in the personal stories of impoverished people seeking political empowerment and the basic requirements of a decent life-style.--North Carolina Historical ReviewVividly records a superior achievement of the Terry Sanford years. . . . A must read if you want to learn about the cruelties of poverty while at the same time witnessing the struggle of people fighting against it.--McCormick MessengerOne of the first detailed accounts of the Fund and its relationship to the decade's larger anti-poverty agenda. . . . Provide[s] a captivating sense of the possibility and promise felt by the Fund's leaders. . . . The story and lessons of the Fund make this an important book for those interested in understanding the process of social change.--Left HistoryA welcome addition to the study of race and poverty at the state level.--The Journal of the North Carolina Association of HistoriansTo Right These Wrongs, is a compelling, detailed story. . . . Highly recommended.--Choice

Review This book is a must read if you want to learn more about the cruelties of poverty while at the same time witnessing the struggle of people fighting against it. The North Carolina Fund made a difference in the lives of people who deserved much more from the richest country in the world. This book challenges the assumptions many have about poor peoples' apathy and indifference to their own conditions.--Howard Fuller, Founder and Director, Institute for the Transformation of Learning, Marquette UniversityOne of the many virtues of To Right These Wrongs is its understanding of poverty as an issue of power, or, more accurately, of power's mal-distribution, and one of its signal achievements is the way in which it draws the links between the Civil Rights Movement, the War on Poverty, and labor union activity. The story told in this beautifully executed book is important for the present as well as the past.--Michael B. Katz, Walter H. Annenberg Professor of History, University of PennsylvaniaAn important study. Korstad and Leloudis are well-respected historians and the story they tell here is fascinating. This is a well-researched and engaging account, accessible to a broad range of readers interested in the intersection of public policy and history. It will be of immediate interest to politicians, policy makers, and activists interested in economic justice and the historical legacies of race and class inequalities.--Christina Greene, author of Our Separate Ways: Women and the Black Freedom Movement in Durham, North CarolinaThese pages vividly record a superior achievement of the Terry Sanford years. This story, so well written by Korstad and Leloudis, is essential reading for understanding North Carolina's crucial time of transition and change.--William C. Friday, President Emeritus, University of North CarolinaTo Right These Wrongs is an important history confined to a small space. This is a major intervention into the relationship of the state and welfare, a historical reclamation of policy aspects of poverty programs, and a sensitive rendering from top to bottom of the political economy of poverty.--Glenda Elizabeth Gilmore, Peter V. and C. Vann Woodward Professor of History, Yale UniversityA thoroughly and excellently documented work that fills one of the major gaps in our understanding of the Great Society and the War on Poverty. Korstad and Leloudis's interpretations of the politics of race and poverty in North Carolina are bold and nuanced.--Harvard Sitkoff, professor of history, University of New Hampshire

Marvin L. Miller applies performance theory to letters that were not just read in silence, but were performed, and prompts the reader to listen sympathetically to various ancient Jewish letters. Marvin Lloyd Miller combines a wide range of approaches to cast new light on the form and function of several ancient Jewish letters in a variety of languages. He applies a new emerging field of performance theory to texts, and argues that letters and other documents were not just read in silence, as is normal today, but were ""performed"" especially when they were addressed to a community. The Performance focuses closely on the ways in which the engagement of the audience during the performance of a text might be read from traces present in the text itself.
