Pentecostalism was born at the turn of the twentieth century in a "tumble-down shack" in a rundown semi-industrial area of Los Angeles composed of a tombstone shop, saloons, livery stables and railroad freight yards. One hundred years later Pentecostalism has not only proven to be the most dynamic representative of Christian faith in the past century, but a transnational religious phenomenon as well. In a global context Pentecostalism has attained a membership of 500 million growing at the rate of 20 million new members a year. Aimee Semple McPherson, born on a Canadian farm, was Pentecostalism's first celebrity, its "female Billy Sunday". Arriving in Southern California with her mother, two children and $100.00 in 1920, "Sister Aimee", as she was fondly known, quickly achieved the height of her fame. In 1926, by age 35, "Sister Aimee" would pastor "America's largest 'class A' church", perhaps becoming the country's first mega church pastor. In Los Angeles she quickly became a folk hero and civic institution. Hollywood discovered her when she brilliantly united the sacred with the profane. Anthony Quinn would play in the Temple band and Aimee would baptize Marilyn Monroe, council Jean Harlow and become friends with Charlie Chaplain, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. Based on the biographer's first time access to internal church documents and cooperation of Aimee's family and friends, this major biography offers a sympathetic appraisal of her rise to fame, revivals in major cities and influence on American religion and culture in the Jazz Age. The biographer takes the reader behind the scenes of Aimee's fame to the early days of her harsh apprenticeship in revival tents, failed marriages and poverty. Barfoot recreates the career of this "called" and driven woman through oral history, church documents and by a creative use of new source material. Written with warmth and often as dramatic as Aimee, herself, the author successfully captures not only what made Aimee famous but also what transformed Pentecostalism from its meager Azusa Street mission beginnings into a transnational, global religion.

"SISTER AIMEE" McPherson & the Making of Modern Pentecostalism By Lois C B Smith This really is 1 of the very Best Bks written re this Pioneer Preacher & I would have given it 5 Stars, except for "INCOMPLETE" story on pgs 256 & 257. I personally know the FULL True Story of what happened in St. Louis, Mo., from personal accounts by my own parents (who were Personal Friends w/"Sister Aimee".) In 1921 (long before I was born) my own father (Rev.Dr. R. Elmer Baker) was the very 1st Pastor of the very 1st Assembly of God Church in St. Louis, Mo. He is the UN-NAMED Pastor w/about 70 members (see page 256) who rented the Masonic Temple for "Sister Aimee" to hold Evangelistic Mtgs. That Bldg Over-flowed, so MY FATHER w/his Members had to Rent the COLISEUM. I have old-fashioned LONG B/W Photos of said Mtgs. My parents & 3 older Siblings (long deceased) lived across from the McPherson Home & "Angelus Temple" & my 3 Siblings played w/little McPherson Daughter & Son, ROBERTA & ROLF. U can be sure that I've written the Author of this Bk., about him OMITTING my Father's NAME on Pgs 256 & 257. This Bk does have lots of photos = some are just like the ones in my family's Album. So, I do recommend this Bk. Also, I personally know 1 of the Reviewers, Rev.Dr. R. Spittler, Provost Emeritus, Fuller Seminary; from where my late son got his Masters & Doctorate of Ministry Degrees. In the fall of 1862 General U. S. Grant began his overland Vicksburg Campaign through the heart of Mississippi. His route began in Grand Junction, Tennessee, ran down the Mississippi Central railroad through Holly Springs, Mississippi, over the marshy Tallahatchie River bottom, through Oxford, Water Valley, past Coffeeville, on to Grenada, and eventually to the state capital at Jackson. From there he would move west on the Southern rail line to Vicksburg, capture it, and in the process control the state of Mississippi and the Mississippi River. But first, he had to get past Pemberton’s Rebels in north Mississippi. Pemberton constructed strong fortifications on the Tallahatchie River, but fell back to Grenada when the Union sent a flanking maneuver from Helena, Arkansas. Before Grant could reach Pemberton his cavalry was stopped in a hard-fought clash at Coffeeville. This action threw Grant’s progress into neutral and provided time for the Rebs to regroup and plan a counter-strike. On the early morning of December 20 the Rebel cavalry struck Grant’s main Mississippi base in Holly Springs, ending the Mississippi Central Railroad campaign, forcing the Federals out of Mississippi to re-plan the Vicksburg Campaign. Learn what led to these battles, how the out-manned and out-gunned Confederates fought and won them, what effect it had on the Vicksburg Campaign, and how it was part of the High Tide of the Confederacy.

An Upstanding Piece Of Work By Allen Baswell There have been many tomes written about pivotal battles in the Western Theater of the Civil War, War Between the States, whatever one wishes to call it, but a book about a Civil War battle that was fought on Mississippi soil during the early winter of 1862, one that isn't mentioned in the major tomes about the war, is getting its just due.Don Sides, a person I've known for nearly 30 years, has written The Essential Guide To The Battle Of Coffeeville, and what an upstanding piece of work this is. Granted, this may not be something along the lines of Shelby Foote, Bruce Catton and others who have written extensively about the war, it's battles and the men who led troops in battle, but it is very good just the same. It is a very easy book to read, a page turner throughout. It tells in rich, easy detail of what led to what occurred in this Yalobusha County town in December, 1862, and the role that it played in the Confederate Army eventually making its way to Holly Springs, and delay Grant overtaking Vicksburg. This is written for the arm chair person who has a passion and intense interest in the Civil War, especially in what took place in the Western theater of the war.I enjoyed it, and I will not hesitate to pick it up and read it again.

There is no one alive who knows more about this particular battle than Don Sides and he has put all the essential facts (and a lot more interesting information) into the book. But for someone who wants the most details of Grant's first attempt on capturing Vicksburg this book has more about the campaign from Holly Springs to just north of Grenada than any other I have read. As the author of the regimental history of the 33rd Mississippi Infantry I was particularly interested in this since that regiment was on the march from the Tallahatchie Line to Grenada although they sat out the battle inside the town of Coffeeville as the fight went on about one and one-half miles to the northeast. The personal details of some of the soldiers involved in the battle were quite moving to me and worth the price of the book. The story of how President Lincoln responded to the daughter of Lt. Col. William McCullough's about his death in the battle should be known by every Civil War historian.

Dougherty This work is the definitive account of the Central Mississippi Campaign focused on the overland movement on Grenada from Holly Springs and Eastern Arkansas. Author Sides is the preeminent historian on the Central Mississippi Campaign, and this book should be on the shelf in every library of Civil War historian and buff interested in Grant's campaign against Vicksburg. The account is finely detailed, and supplemented with photos that show why the Union troops were surprised by the Confederate attack. The battle showed the war would be long and hard-fought, as both sides acquitted themselves well under adverse conditions. The focus is on a small, little-known battle, but all the more important in showing how the troops fought in battles without fame or glory. Highly recommended to all those interested in the Civil War.

About the Author DAVID WARE has served as historian of the Arkansas State Capitol since 2001. He is a native of the District of Columbia, grew up in Nebraska and Wyoming, and earned his PhD in American history from Arizona State University. His career has included both academic and public history, as well as busking and an extended foray in the oil exploration business. He and his wife and daughter live in Little Rock, Arkansas.

But given that fact, i can tell you that this is a top notch book from not only an educational standpoint, but from an entertaining one as well.In the book, David weaves stories and historical anecdotes in a way that leaves you thinking he's sitting in a chair across from you sharing a cup of coffee, while speaking with animation and devotion to not just the historical subject, but the people who lived that history as well.Fascinating as a start to finish read or as a "close your eyes and pick a page" perusal, this is a fantastic book for young and old alike and would fit very well in any teacher's classroom!
