The Kellys of Kellys Corners traces the direct patrilineal lineage of this family from their first arrival in America during the late-1600s and early-1700s to the time of the author's great-grandfather, William Boss Kelly in the late-1800s and early-1900s. This covers, respectively, the lives of Samuel, David, Charles, Joseph and William Boss Kelly. From their probable origins in Scotland, the Kellys came initially to Middlesex and then to Somerset County in New Jersey. From there, Charles Kelly, David's son, settled in the "lake country" of Seneca County, New York. Thereafter, the book roughly chronicles the spread of the various subsequent lines to their ultimate and disparate destinations, focusing mainly on Joseph Kelly's family. This is followed by Seneca Kelly's and William Boss Kelly's services during the Civil War, the latter having left us an excellent diary of his exploits. The last chapter completes William's settlement in Towanda, Pennsylvania and the births and deaths of his children, who include my grandfather, Frank Delano Kelly. Descriptions of these various places are covered in some detail, and aspects of the family history include religion, occupation, marriages and children and, to some degree, political party affiliation, among others. The book replies almost exclusively on primary sources such as vital statistics, public records, censuses, newspaper articles and cemetery records, though some secondary histories are also employed. For the sake of the reader's enjoyment, footnotes are not used.

More than Just a Family History By David Seaman Since my Great Great Great Aunt Roxy Kelly was just one of my ancestors and family history leads directly to Kelly Corner in Lodi, New York (now a crossroads with stone walls lining open pastures) this book caught my eye. The photo on the cover is the same one that hangs in my family dining room which has been there since the mid 19th Century. (my copy is better than his.) Reading this book was essential and I approached it with trepidation. Kelly is a common American name and many are descended from this extended family. This is a book for geneology and not a historical telling, though Mr. Kelly has written this book so that it reads comfortably and with interest, not a litany of who begat who. We begin in New Jersey and Bruce Kelly clearly spent years researching where each member of the family went. Given what a PhD dissertation requires and looks like, Mr. Kelly has more than done his job. This book does NOT have an index and the lack of this is sometimes frustrating. It's a matter of importance to someone named Kelly who's quickly looking for personal connections; not all of them will read the entire text searching for connections. Their loss. The truth is that "The Kellys of Kellys Corner" is an American Story, not a dissertation. And regardless of any familial connections, this book is a clear and beautiful view of American history. The amount of work that went into this is clear and I highly reccommend it.

Excerpt from Condition of the Border at the Union: Destruction of the Graham ClanMuch light has recently been thrown upon a peculiarly interesting period of Border history by the diligent researches of Sir Maxwell Lyte and his colleagues of the National Manuscripts Commission.Although we have abundant records of all the great Border events of the sixteenth century down to the death of Elizabeth, it is surprising how little we accurately know of the barbarous methods employed in the final overthrow of the Border clans at the time of the Union of the two Kingdoms, when James Stuart of Scotland mounted the throne as James the First of Great Britain. And yet there was nothing in the history of that memorable reign (save perhaps the gunpowder plot) of greater political importance, and surely there was nothing of greater dramatic interest.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Mr. Graham is obviously something of an apologist for his Border Reiver ancestors, but it is no less entertaining and informative for all that. Of course, my opinion is biased by having Reiver ancestors of my own, Graham's prominent among them!

Had it not been for him AUBURN, NEW YORK couldn't claim the recognition of being the "first city in the nation to have 'seances' held in it"! (They were called "circles" then!)
