“Provides a wealth of information about the nature of American occupations in Haiti that can be useful to Latin American historians and political scientists interested in international relations between the United States and other countries in the region.”—Leslie G. Desmangles, author of The Faces of the Gods: Vodou and Roman Catholicism in Haiti   “Unpacks the cultural, political, and economic impact of U.S. occupation, and by extension, American imperialism in Haiti.”—Quito Swan, author of Black Power in Bermuda: The Struggle for Decolonization   In 1915, United States Marines arrived in Haiti to safeguard lives and property from the political instability of the time. While there, the Marine Corps controlled everything from finance to education, from health care to public works and built an army, “La Garde d’Haiti,” to maintain the changes it implemented. Ultimately, the decisions made by the United States about and for Haiti have indelibly shaped the development of what is generally considered the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.            Contrary Destinies presents the story of the one hundred year relationship between the two countries. Leon Pamphile chronicles the internal, external, and natural forces that have shaped Haiti as it is today, striking a balance between the realities faced by the people on the island and the global and transnational contexts that affect their lives. He examines how American policies towards the Caribbean nation—during the Cold War and later as the United States became the sole world superpower—and the legacies of the occupation contributed to the gradual erosion of Haitian independence, culminating in a second occupation and the current United Nations peacekeeping mission.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. "CONTRARY DESTINIES... BOOK REVIEW" By Tobias Williams Dr. Leon D. Pamphile, I declare that there is something politically and socially provocative about your book, 'CONTRARY DESTINIES A Century of America's Occupation, Deoccupation, and Reoccupation of Haiti', henceforth ('CONTRARY DESTINIES...'). What needs to take place is a collaboration between yourself and Tariq Nasheed (Director of Hidden Colors I-III) to produce an adaptation of your book into a 4th Hidden Colors DVD documentary. Afterwards, black philanthropic financiers, black screenplay writers, black movie producers, black film directors, black historians/scholars such as yourself could converge to tell the magnificent story of Haiti in a feature film and/or television series from a Black Haitian African-centered perspective. Such a hopeful viewpoint would empower even our young people to analyze or even contextualize racist media sound bites like, '...Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere' that insinuate that Haitians or Black people are incapable of self-governing. Our young people could recall from James Weldon Johnson's book, 'Self-determining Haiti' and your book, 'CONTRARY DESTINIES...', the following: 1) The Monroe Doctrine (1823) encouraged France to deploy armed militia gunboats to 'their' former most profitable slave colony (1825) and forced the Haitians to pay France reparations from 1825-1947 for the initial amount of 150 million francs; 2) Then during the first American occupation of Haiti (1915-1934), the U.S. Marines made their first order of business the seizing of $500,000 in gold from the central bank of Haiti and having it shipped to a Citigroup Bank in New York which was formerly the private National City Bank of New York; and 3) Also, during the first American occupation of Haiti, it was determined that Haiti must pay 'America' 11 million dollars for whatever contrived reason, also known as extortion. I believe much race vindication and nation vindication that you have meticulously researched and penned in your book, 'CONTRARY DESTINIES...' is prerequisite to lifting the spirits of both Black Haitians and Black Americans and to further encourage us to take back control of our lives and achieve economic empowerment. Thank you Sir for such an awesome gift and for allowing me the privilege of partaking a portion of your knowledge and wisdom. I stand to be corrected for any misrepresentation or misunderstanding stated herein. HAITI continues to resonate and occupy an iconic place in the very soul of Black Freedom Fighters. Furthermore, by offering 'CONTRARY DESTINIES...' in a Kindle Format would make the book even more accessible.Dr. Leon D. Pamphile, Sir, I ask that you humor me for attempting to use this book review platform as a conduit for conveying my rather unconventional review of your book 'CONTRARY DESTINIES...'. Posting 'TRUTH' on some social media outlet under your true name could be troublesome (LOL). Currently, I'm not on any type of social media and Tobias Williams is currently my assumed name. I live in Humble, Texas via of Compton, California with my second spouse/wife and youngest of three offspring; and I work in transportation as a blue collar worker, a typical Black man occupation in America. The Honorable Frances Cress Welsing, M.D., authored a book titled, 'THE ISIS PAPERS THE KEYS TO THE COLORS' in which she dedicated her work to victims of this global white supremacy. In chapter 6, entitled 'The Politics Behind Black Male Passivity, Effeminization, Bisexuality, and Homosexuality (August 1974) she made the following hypothetical statement. "The large number of Black male homosexuals and bisexuals who report that they had and have little or no respect for their fathers might have had completely different life histories had they grown up with the knowledge that their fathers died while in defense of their manhood when it was attacked and challenged by the oppressor". I pondered upon the said statement and realized that Dr. Frances Cress Welsing didn't only mean one's biological father; I interpreted that statement to mean that historically/ourstorically speaking, Black men have always valued, defended and placed a premium on their masculinity. And so I wanted to learn more about my Black Fathers and elders resisting the oppressor. I began to purchase books on slave revolts and a few on Haiti and the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804). Then I stumbled upon a book entitled, 'HOMOSEXUALITY AND THE EFFEMINIZATION OF AFRIKAN MALES' by the great prolific author/teacher Baba Mwalimu K. Bomani Baruti either during the fall or winter of 2014. But, is was the U.S. Supreme Court ruling during the summer of 2015 which recognized homosexual marriages that compelled me to read it from cover to cover. And of course, I view this book in the same esteem as I vision 'CONTRARY DESTINIES...' and 'THE ISIS PAPERS'. Soon thereafter, I purchased DVDs that Baba Mwalimu Baruti produced and was admonished to become an expert in something. At that moment, I endeavored to start learning all that I could about the Haitian Revolution and the Haitian warriors because they represent The Best Example Ever (TBEE) of heterosexual Black male masculinity period. And while searching for more books on Amazon.com, an uncensored image of your book was propositioned for pre-sale. After hesitating momentarily, I decided to purchase the book a few days later, with my copy arriving September 4, 2015.Dr. Leon D. Pamphile, I commenced to reading 'CONTRARY DESTINIES...' the Friday after Thanksgiving 2015 and finished the following Thursday in a total of 7 days as you already know there are 7 chapters in the book for my initial reading. How ironic is it that 1) your book was published on September 1, 2015 during the centennial anniversary of America's Occupation of Haiti (1915-2015); and 2) Haitian boxer Andre Berto and 'American' boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. clashed on September 12th? Well after my initial read of 'CONTRARY DESTINIES...', I subsequently discovered that the book cover image was censored on most major online bookstores such as: 1) Amazon.com; 2) AbeBooks.com; 3) Alibris.com; 4) Barnes&Noble.com; and 5) Walmart.com etc. After making my 4th or 5th call of protest to Amazon.com and alleging that they and their cohorts were engaging in some type of racist organized pseudo distribution-boycott of your book, the book cover image magically reappeared on Amazon.com the next day. My preoccupation with Amazon.com stems from the fact that that is who I have patronized substantially monetarily over the years.Dr. Leon D. Pamphile, since the enemy censored and then uncensored the front cover of your book, 'CONTRARY DESTINIES...' which depicts the juxtaposing of the Haitian flag to the American flag, I felt such actions warrant another 'look' at your book cover; the metaphor "never judge a book by its cover" notwithstanding. I focused my observation on the layout of the two flags and reasoned that you must be antagonizing and vexing the enemy by engaging in some type of political psychological symbolic warfare. What I have discovered on Google and Wikipedia regarding the layout of flags, is that the study of flags is called vexillology and that one follows flag protocol and flag etiquette according to national and international standards to be politically correct. So, "...when two poles are crossed, the position of honor is the flag that ends on the left side from the point of view of an observer (the pole will therefore end on the right)". Also, "the American flag, when displayed with another flag against a wall from crossed staffs, should be on the right (the flag's own right) and its staff should be in front of the staff of the other flag". Had I served in the armed forces or studied graphic design, etc., I might have already known this. Professor...Good Reverend, I couldn't help for noticing that the Haitian flag on your book cover, 'CONTRARY DESTINIES....' is occupying the position of honor; and therefore the American flag on your book cover, 'CONTRARY DESTINIES...' is occupying the position of dishonor, rightfully so. Furthermore, that the staff supporting the Haitian flag is quite noticeably in front and on top of the staff of the American flag, suggesting Haitian dominance. Just in case you missed that Professor...Good Reverend, I thought I'd bring it to your attention (LOL). As we say in da hood, "I ain't mad at cha Yo", not at all...not one iota. And again, thank you Sir, it was an honor. Peace.P.S. May we honor our Queen-Mother Dr. Frances Cress Welsing (March 18 1935 - January 2, 2016) and the rest of our elders and ancestors alive or deceased with our newfound cooperation and unity in order to survive this genocidal conspiracy against us. We must unite or perish. Rest In Peace Queen-Mother 'ISIS'.

Factory of Strategy is the last of Antonio Negri's major political works to be translated into English. Rigorous and accessible, it is both a systematic inquiry into the development of Lenin's thought and an encapsulation of a critical shift in Negri's theoretical trajectory.

Lenin is the only prominent politician of the modern era to seriously question the "withering away" and "extinction" of the state, and like Marx, he recognized the link between capitalism and modern sovereignty and the need to destroy capitalism and reconfigure the state. Negri refrains from portraying Lenin as a ferocious dictator enforcing the proletariat's reappropriation of wealth, nor does he depict him as a mere military tool of a vanguard opposed to the Ancien Régime. Negri instead champions Leninism's ability to adapt to different working-class configurations in Russia, China, Latin America, and elsewhere. He argues that Lenin developed a new political figuration in and beyond modernity and an effective organization capable of absorbing different historical conditions. He ultimately urges readers to recognize the universal application of Leninism today and its potential to institutionally―not anarchically―dismantle centralized power.

Factory of Strategy: Thirty-Three Lessons on Lenin (Insurrections: Critical Studies in Religion, Politics, and Culture), by Antonio Negri

Review

This book on Lenin turns into a revolutionary text, into a true manual of resistance.

(Slavoj Žižek, author of Living in the End Times)

There are many Lenins: in this exciting synthesis, with its emphasis on philosophy as well as praxis and on spontaneity versus organization, Antonio Negri discloses the dialectical logic of Lenin's historical situation. At the same time, by insisting on situational logic as such, he demonstrates its differences from our own today, where keeping faith with Lenin's lessons might lead to different forms. This important text from Negri's activist period is therefore a crucial document for understanding Negri's own work and positions and those of Lenin.

(Fredric Jameson, Duke University)

Factory of Strategy is a bracingly original and systematic inquiry into the development of the Russian revolutionary's political thought, bearing comparison with Lukács's earlier Lenin. It doubles as a unique record of a crucial moment in Negri's trajectory as a political philosopher and activist, when questions of strategy and insurrection were foremost in his mind. Among the most accessible, accomplished, and vibrant pieces of Negri's writing, it stands out for its effort to combine political pedagogy and ideological intervention.

(Alberto Toscano, Goldsmiths, University of London, author of Fanaticism: On the Uses of an Idea)

Antonio Negri has taught political philosophy at the University of Padua, the University of Vincennes, and the College Internationale de Philosophie. His books include The Politics of Subversion: A Manifesto for the Twenty-First Century and Negri on Negri.

Good book, could have been made more of By Lacancan I can't understand why the electronic version of this book costs the same as the hardback but maybe it's just a mystery of publishing. In this book Negri performs an intricate analysis of Lenin's politics, the Soviet State and the composition of the proletariat drawing from it lessons of political organisation for his time. It shows Negri's typical diligence and perspicuity. The book should have been given an index to help it being used as a point of reference. Overall very interesting but much more could have been done, despite the obvious efforts of the translator and Negri to editorially make it into something that would get the attention it deserves.

America’s greatest professional billiards player tells the story of his legendary life and career—from his days as a child prodigy to his record-breaking run of world championships Willie Mosconi’s father never wanted him to play billiards. At night, the boy would lie awake listening to the clatter of balls downstairs in the family pool hall, and when his father wasn’t around, he would climb onto an apple crate to practice his shots. When his dad started locking up the balls and cue, young Willie improvised with potatoes and a broom handle. By the time he was 7 years old, he was good enough to play against Ralph Greenleaf in a match billed as “The Child Prodigy vs. The World Champion.”   It was the start of a magnificent career that would include an unprecedented 15 world championships and the record for most consecutive balls run without a miss: 526. Nicknamed “Mr. Pocket Billiards,” Mosconi was instrumental in popularizing pool in America, serving as a consultant for iconic films such as The Hustler and The Color of Money and facing off against the famed hustler Minnesota Fats in 2 celebrated matches.   Cowritten with journalist Stanley Cohen, Willie’s Game is the colorful, captivating autobiography of an illustrious champion who lifted his sport to new heights and played by one simple rule: If you don’t miss, you don’t have to worry about anything else.

Willie's Game: An Autobiography, by Stanley Cohen, Willie Mosconi

From Publishers Weekly Readers need not be pool players or even know the rudiments of the game to enjoy this autobiography. Born in 1913, the son of a Philadelphia pool-hall manager, Mosconi made his mark as a child prodigy at age six, then "retired," returning to the game in his teens when his parents became ill and he had to support the family. He went on to win 15 pool championships before retiring permanently in 1966; some of the many records he set still stand. Writing with Cohen ( A Magic Summer: The '69 Mets ), Mosconi makes pool's technical aspects comprehensible as he explains its jargon. His vivid evocation of the sport's furious competitiveness, the fantastic concentration required and the need to focus on one's game rather than on one's opponent makes it clear that pool is as demanding as boxing or pro football--even though the top-flight contestants play in tuxedos. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Pool, or billiards, is enjoying a yuppie-induced renaissance of late. Mosconi, the record 15-time world champion player/legend, played from the 1930s to his retirement in the late 1970s. Noted for his speedy shooting style and his professional manner, Mosconi here provides a fascinating glimpse of his 50 years in the subculture's circuits and venues. His reminiscences of colorful legends of the game, like Ralph Greenleaf and the inimitable Minnesota Fats, are especially noteworthy, while his account of his early years growing up in Philadelphia, the grind of the road, wartime service, and health troubles convey aspects of the human predicament. The biggest problem for general readers will be the numerous play-by-play accounts of memorable games. Unless one is already versed in the rules, scoring, and so forth, these passages quickly become tiresome. While not a necessary purchase for most libraries, the book's overall entertainment and historical value are high. Purchase where sports books are heavily circulated.- David M Turkalo, Social Law Lib. , BostonCopyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews Likable, well-told autobiography of the world's greatest pocket billiards player, full of superb billiard lore and tales of giants of the cue. Even those who have never played pool will enjoy this engaging story of a Philadelphia billiards prodigy who was playing for stakes at age six and who, a year later, challenged (but lost to) then-World Champion Ralph Greenleaf. Mosconi (writing here with Cohen, A Magic Summer, 1988, etc.) heard billiard balls clicking in earliest childhood, the sound coming from tables in his father's pool hall below the boy's bedroom, and at age five began playing while standing on a box. Though his father tried to deny him access to the tables, Mosconi unveiled a talent so great that his stunned dad began showing the kid off in matches at his and other pool halls. At age seven, Mosconi defeated ten-year-old Juvenile Champion Ruth McGinnis, and, when he turned ten himself, retired undefeated. When the Depression hit, Mosconi reentered the sport for prize money, soon learning that tournament masters had an analytic sense of the game far superior to that of pool hustlers out to con inferior players. Mosconi himself never hustled--though, as a joke, Toots Shor once brought him in to beat braggart Jackie Gleason, who didn't know Mosconi by sight. The author commended Gleason to director Robert Rossen to play Minnesota Fats in The Hustler, for which Mosconi acted as technical adviser and as Paul Newman's trainer. Many legendary games are replayed here as Mosconi shows--quite modestly--how his fast, nervous style won the World Championship 15 times and at last crushed the real-life Minnesota Fats on TV's Wide World of Sports. You're on the green felt, kissing a solid-colored ball into a side pocket and stopping on a dime, positioned perfectly for the next ball. Marvelous. A fun and informative look at one of pool's greatest players By A Customer Willie's Game chronicles the life of Willie Mosconi, one of the greatest pool players in the history of the game. That in itself makes it a necessary edition to a billiard enthusiast's bookcase, but those interested in sports, competition, and prodigies will enjoy it too. From learning to play by hitting potatoes around on the pool table, to winning tournaments for big money, to setting the world record for the most balls run (526), Mosconi did it all. He talks a lot in his autobiography about what makes a good player, and about the difference between an apt technician and a champion. As you'd expect, the personalities are colorful, especially when set against the background of early twentieth century America. Mosconi doesn't mince words about his impressions of and experiences with other pool notables. There's a lot of valuable pool history and anecdotes here.

Very well written with Stanley Cohen (written many sports books). Cohen uses an unusal writing style, letting Mosconi speak in his own words and then uses seperate interviews or other historical research to add to his story.Very well written and an easy read.

Well written, with views from Mosconi's perspective, as well as those who knew him and excellent information from the author too. Anyone who has an interest in pocket billiards (Mr. Mosconi hated the term "pool" because he felt it referred to the seedier aspect of the game's roots, as you can learn in this book) beyond the occasional game in a bar will definitely enjoy this book.

Sure, I knew about Saint Patrick and how he ran the snakes out of the country, but didn’t know the snakes where druids and pagans and he of course was teaching christianity to the Irish people. I knew of James Connolly but wasn’t sure what he had to do with Irish history except the Easter uprising. I didn’t know he had served in the British Army or started the Socialist Party of Ireland. I knew of the IRA but never heard of the IRB until I read this book. I liked the way the author Stephan Weaver laid out his book by periods of history starting with the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) from 8000 BC to 4000 BC and covering every period up until the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. I learned a lot, like the French attacked Ireland a couple of times and so did the Vikings. The Black Plague hit Ireland hard as well as the Potato Famine and Ireland was independent during WWII because they didn’t want to fight alongside their bitter enemies, the British, but most Irish men joined up to fight the Germans, about 40,000 of them. A very interesting book.

Succinct eBook that covers 50 events from robust hunter gatherer society to modern Celtic Tiger~* By Happy Amazon Customer Incredible eBook overview Ireland's rich and moving history in the context of specific historic events. From the use of microliths by early inhabitants of the Emerald Isle to invasion by the French and English (Norman), civil wars, modern day historic events, including the guerrilla war-fare that finally dislodged the British, this book covers significant economic and social historic events faced and overcome by the Celtic Tiger. Loved how concise and short this eBook was and greatly enjoyed the historic photographs and illustrations included. I love Ireland and this eBook made me want to go again (it's been 6 years since I've been there) and visit the St. Benedict’s Priory Bible Garden and Tea Rooms in Cobh (Cobh Town and Cork Harbour are two of my favorite places to visit) as well as travel to the numerous historic sites mentioned in this eBook. I wouldn't want to read a 300-400 page history book, so this succinct yet powerfully informative book hit the spot. Happy reading~*

The son of a World War I veteran, Charles Granquist was 17 when war was declared with Germany in 1939. He lied about his age, joined the infantry and was sent to Egypt. Like so many other young men at the time, Granquist did not know what to expect. All he really cared about was doing his duty and serving his country. He never even contemplated his chances of becoming a prisoner of war - he was there to fight and take prisoners. Captured by the Germans in Greece, Granquist was determined to continue carrying the war to his captors "any way I could." In his memoir, A Long Way Home, he describes his shame at becoming a POW and how he believed he had failed himself, his mates and as a soldier. He orchestrated a remarkable five escape attempts, all of which ended unsuccessfully. Yet Charles refused to give up, determined to fulfil his duty as an Aussie Digger and make his own small contribution to the war effort. His story takes the reader on the rollercoaster of escape, recapture and 196 days of solitary confinement before his eventual return home with his Russian war bride. Granquist's account of his wartime experiences adds another important chapter to the story of World War II POWs, while showcasing the spirit, humour, persistence and ingenuity expected of an Aussie Digger. A Long Way Home is tribute to one veteran's spirit and the mateship he still holds so dear today.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. interesting. By DC During my younger years, I read many books about Allied soldiers being held captive in POW Camps during World War II.For this reason, along with the fact that the author is Australian (as am I), I couldn't wait to read this book. The book includes the authors life and experiences in the lead up to World War II, as well as detailing his time serving in the Australian Army, and his deployment to Palestine, North Africa, Greece and then life as a prisoner of war.It also details his numerous escape attempts, as well as being recaptured by the Italians/Germans.My only criticism of the book is that it is rather short - or at least it appears that way.Highly recommended.

This historical novel celebrates the lives of Elisha Benton and Jemima Barrows. Their courage and self-sacrifice in the years 1774 -1777 is a metaphor for the actions of countless others who contributed to the birth of our country. As such this story is a celebration not only of a colonial era couple, but also of Connecticut’s rich history and her citizens. In 1774, the closing of Boston’s port by the British fanned outrage across the New England colonies. The farmers of Tolland, Connecticut drove sheep to relieve the suffering of their fellow subjects. Within months they would march on Boston again – this time shouldering arms in response to the Lexington Alarm. Among them was Elisha Benton, 1st born son of one of the town’s founding families. The rebellion tore him from his betrothed. Jemima Barrows was but 15, yet it was her family’s low station that fueled Benton opposition to the match. If Elisha and Jemima were to wed, the patriarch’s objections must be overcome, and Elisha must survive the war. Today one may visit the Daniel Benton Homestead Museum – where some believe the spirits of this young couple linger. Here their fate can be discovered. The story of their lives and courageous self-sacrifice, however, dwells within the pages of this historical novel. *** “Every local third grader, and every visitor to the Daniel Benton Homestead Museum, has heard the brief legend of Elisha Benton and Jemima Barrows and seen their graves. Many visit with the hope of catching a glimpse of their spirits. Now John Cuffe has brought Elisha and Jemima to life in this engaging novel, set against the events of the Revolutionary War. Written in the first person, as told by Elisha Benton, it seems to give an authentic voice to the lives and times of this young couple.” Barbara Cook, Archivist, Town Historian, Tolland Historical Society *** “John J. Cuffe has crafted an engaging story that weaves the facts of Elisha Benton’s life with what is known about 18th century rural New England and the early days of the American Revolutionary War. It is very interesting to have Elisha (Benton) with a voice. The author has created a believable and dimensional character in an intriguing story line." Gail White Usher, Director, Daniel Benton Homestead Museum, Tolland Historical Society

I can only imagine the amount of research and study he had to accomplish to write such a thorough and entertaining book, not to mention the talent it took to evoke such strong emotions, at least for me; though I can't imagine anyone reading this would not be touched by the deep connections felt from the characters. I literally cried numerous times throughout. Either I'm an emotional fool, or he's an outstanding writer. I will take bets it's the latter. I know what it takes to write in a character's voice being an author myself, and it's not an easy task...that it is done so well, astounds me. I'm not usually interested in historical fiction especially war stories, but I found myself immersed in this book and not wanting to put it down. This alone proves to me how well it is written. Those interested in history, specifically the American Revolution will also like this book.I'd also like to compliment the cover artist, Christopher. What an outstanding job he did. The cover helps you imagine exactly what you need. Congratulations on a fine piece of art in more ways than one. I hope others find "Forever, Side by Side" in their possession and indulge in what I can only describe as a journey back in time, especially back in time for those who have or had Tolland, CT in their lives. A wonderful piece of historical fiction for those living in this quaint, charming New England town.

FOREVER, Side by Side is an historical novel where the author weaves an interesting, plausible work of fiction in and around actual events from a fascinating time in our nation’s history.I had never heard of the two main characters, Elisha Benton and Jemima Barrows, before reading the book. After finishing the story, however, I could not let go of them, so I did some research about them and their home, Tolland, Connecticut. After doing this, I was even more impressed with the book and how the author was able to capture the couple’s historical impact. If you like history, especially when written in an understandable context about actual people, I recommend you read this book.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Historical Novel on the American Revolutionary War By Amazon Customer I really enjoyed this book. It is a well written and compelling story set around the time of the American Revoltionary War. While the characters and their actions are based on actual individuals and historic accounts, the author uses that as a starting point and then depicts the impact of historic events on ordinary people, their families and their lives. The writing of the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Battle of Long Island is very descriptive and understandable, describing the successes and losses of the battles but also the physical and emotional impact on the participants. And a good love story is told throughout the course of the novel.

By Cold Coffee Cafe Author Susan Whitfield’s exquisite storytelling will escort you back to medieval European history to the grand LeMans Cathedrale on June 10, 1127 where Henry Beauclerc, King of England and Duke of Normandy, gives his daughter Empress Matilda Maud Alice in betrothal to Sir Geoffrey V Plantagenet, Knight of the Order of the Bath and Count of Anjou, son of Fulk V, King of Jerusalem.Fourteen year old Count Geoffrey finds himself in the bedchamber of his lady wife Matilda who had been married before and encounters a rigid, irritable woman who preys on his youthful innocence. The count throws himself into his royal duties for the sake of the kingdom while the King insists on offspring and sends a young maid servant named Annique to teach him the fine art of love.As reviewer it is my pleasure to whet your appetite with this quote from Count Geoffrey.“The first day of winter roared in with a strong cold wind whipping trees and bushes and tents and merchant stands in town. Pastured horses ran briskly with tails high, some tagging others as they romped. I was thankful to have fine shelter and plenty of firewood, although more would be needed to keep fires burning throughout the castle before winter ended. Castle stores were filled with harvested crops, among them corn meal and flour, dried apples and other fruits, lard and herbs. Meats from hunts hung in smoke. We would fare better than most of the country’s people until planting season returned in spring.Darkness crept in early and lingered long. The moon often hid itself from us. Loneliness accompanied me to my bed chamber at night. I found myself staying up late to play chess or throw darts alone or with anyone willing to pass time with me.Daily jousting and warlike games of hunting amused me and kept me occupied away from Matilda and tempered thought of Annique. Some nights were spent besting fellow knights at chess or checkers. I welcomed distance and time spent with other knights outside dark cold castle walls when time allowed. I lost myself in preparing strategies to outwit the older and more experienced knights. My horse, Warrior,—the color of a cloud whitened by sun—was powerful and easily held me even in full armor.”Let me tell you a funny story. Late last night, my husband and I were lying in bed talking before going to sleep and I started telling him the story, Sprig of Broom. I started at the beginning and was telling him all about it. Half way through my re-telling the story, he stopped me and said, "WAIT" don't tell me the end, let’s watch it together. I laughed and told him he would have to wait to see Sprig of Broom in movie format because for now it is Susan Whitfield’s historical fiction book. This is a testament to Susan’s great writing skills.I invite you to relive the story of Count Geoffrey (later known as Geoffrey the Handsome) and step into his shoes as fate will determine if his lady wife Matilda will assume the throne upon her father’s death. Walk the royal Castle halls, smell the stench of common places, cross the English Channel, and observe a proud father as he swaddles his offspring with no knowledge of how history will write about the Plantagenet Kings of England.Cold Coffee Press Endorses Sprig Of Broom by Susan Whitfield as a historical fiction woven with threads of history and story telling that draw the reader back to a harsh and mystical time in medieval European history where Kings, Queens, Emperors and Empresses rule, where Dukes, Duchess, Knights, Counts, Princes and Princesses are born and history is written. Sprig of Broom needs to be shared in movie format someday. I reviewed this book from a Kindle/PDF format and the review was completed on September 23, 2015.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fitting Tribute to An Ancestor By Mary Deal Sprig of Broom, by Susan Whitfield, gives us a unique peek into the fertile mind of this award-winning author. While researching her genealogy she recognizes the life of the man from whom she descends, one gallant Sir Geoffrey V. Plantagenet, could be turned into a slightly fictionalized but also true accounting of his long and beleaguered life, its heartaches and satisfactions. Sir Geoffrey was the original Plantagenet who started the Sprig of Broom usage.Whitfield’s ability to establish unique character personalities is well honed. The settings as described made me feel a part of the story, the action. I fought beside Sir Geoffrey in long and bloody battles, cringed at his wife's cruel taunting and treatment. I despised yet understood the Dowager Empress Matilda. So many diverse lives fill this story and make it an exciting and satisfying read. I am still amazed at how much history is packed in here.Sprig of Broom is an historical novel that I didn’t wish to see end. But it had to because all of Sir Geoffrey’s life, from teen years and on is included in this exciting portrayal of life circa. 1127 in Great Britain. I don’t want to say much more about this book that wouldn’t end up being a spoiler. So, suffice it to say, I wholeheartedly recommend Whitfield’s Sprig of Broom to historical aficionados, for both the fiction and nonfiction of it. It’s difficult to tell what’s fiction and what’s not. Sir Geoffrey’s life makes it a most exciting read for any reader. Whitfield has paid a magnificent tribute to her ancestor.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A True Historian! By Martha A. Cheves Many years ago I discovered the author John Jakes and fell in love with his Kent Family Chronicles. This series started way back with this family following them from England to America. They went through the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and taming the west. I eagerly read every book until I reached those that took place around WWI. That is when I stopped reading. I love reading history, but only periods and the time from WWI until now has never interested me that much.Now.... I've read the Bible from beginning to end and enjoyed it very much but I don't like history that takes place much after that, especially the history of Kings and Queens. So when I saw that one of my favorite authors had written a book that dates in the year 1127 I thought, no way! I've read everything written by this author but she has always written murder mysteries. How can a suspense writer possibly write about this time period and keep the reader interested, especially me?Well.... I read her book. I was so infatuated with the story that I didn't want to put the book down. Her story is basically about Geoffrey Plantagenet who married Dowager Empress Matilda who was the daughter of King Henry I. Matilda had been married before but after losing her husband King Henry and Geoffrey's father made a deal for the marriage. Geoffrey was very young when this marriage took place. He was only 15 years old! The story continues on through the trials that Geoffrey is put through by Matilda. The death of King Henry and Matilda's journey to take his place. The birth of their children. Geoffrey's mistress and child. And then Geoffrey's is ask to join the Knights Templar and vow to their code of honor.Author Susan Whitfield has truly amazed me by writing a book so full of history, from a time that has always bored me, and made it so interesting that I want to learn more. She is a great historian!

Columbus' Underbelly Laid Bare By Rogue Agent After spending forty years of my life in Columbus, this book still managed to surprise and even shock me. Riots, bombings, gambling, prostitution, world-renowned corruption, and even serial "ripper." Yep, at certain times, the heart of Ohio was as black as coal and just as hard. I recommend this volume to anyone who wants to side step the usual tour down memory lane and get right to the nasty stuff.

Sympathetic yet unsentimental, they transform extensive research into characters who could star in novels and movies. With newfound braggadocio, this book inspires me to tell friends and neighbors in New Jersey, “My hometown was once like freakin’ ‘Gangs of New York!’” The “Sopranos?” That’s HBO. We had Maurice Patrick Murnan. “House of Cards?” That’s Netflix. We had Harry M. Daugherty. Until reading this book, I thought “Badlands” was just a Bruce Springsteen song. Thanks to this father-daughter duo, I have a newfound interest in history and sordid appreciation for the can-do attitude of those who helped shape Ohio’s state capital and influence the nation.

Ames It was interesting, Columbus is no N.Y. or Chicago but we did have alot of Bootleggers and houses of ill-re-pute. I was raised in Columbus Ohio and loved the city in the 40's thru the 90's, now it's turning into residential again which is great.

Who’d have thought a bright, but fairly ordinary young man from middle class America who got just above average grades, dated the same girl throughout high school and went to church most Sundays, would grow up to eventually head a very secretive band of brave individuals-both men and women-who regularly put their lives on the line because they wanted to protect the rest of you. Yet that’s what we did, often sacrificing our personal lives (four marriages for me, all in the book) and our health (countless broken bones, major surgeries, even death) to do it.

Meanwhile you’re just going to have to call me “Papa” like everyone else around the globe has through most of those wildly unpredictable and dangerous years.

However, this book was so incredibly riveting that I felt compelled to let other Amazon members know that it's an honest-to-goodness page turner. I can't wait to see what happens next...hopefully a sequel and movie!

Real life is more scary than fiction By Emmabbooks (I received the Kindle version of this book, free of charge, from Netgalley in return for an honest independent review.)This memoir is written by a former undercover agent working for the US, Canada and various European Governments. He calls himself "Papa". His story starts in 1965 when Papa joins the Marines, and goes through to 2012 when he retires. Imbetween these times Papa has carried out numerous operations - often eliminating people who present a security risk to a government, risking his life (and that of his team) to follow the instructions he has been given. His operations take place all over the world, from Russia to Italy, from Austria to Rendlesham Forest in England. The book covers his recruitment, dealing with moles, gunfights and the planning and execution of many assignments that are shocking and frightening in nature. It also shows the effect that this sort of work has on his home and family life. Due to the covert and sensitive nature of his work, many of the details are sparse, but enough information is given to make the reader fully understand each operation he describes.I found this a fascinating, if very disturbing, book. I would recommend it to everyone, to learn about a world out there that most of us have no idea about. However the book is describing a team of highly committed and hard hitting people who carry out assignments without question. Much of the action described is more scary than any fictional thriller, and may cause you to question that creak you hear downstairs in the dead of night!

By Keith Marshall This book was sent to me by the team at Book Publicity Services for an honest review.I came across this book about the authors own life spent doing all the things i read in fiction.I love my fiction fast paced with realistic action. I have to relate to the characters more than anything. This will make or break a book for me.So to read this book by John Murray about HIS own life out fighting the good fight against the worlds terrorists etc, my interest was definitely piqued.I became totally absorbed by these people and their fight to protect the public, I was hooked almost instantly. The author has a natural voice for telling his stories and it shows on the page.It doesn't come across as anything other than what it is and that's a soldier/spy telling his story. Which is definitely a refreshing change. No rubbish, no political correctness gone mad and no bull crap. It's all about the truth of the job, both the success and failure it's brought.I totally recommend reading this book.If you enjoy spies and assassins in your fiction. Or if you enjoy a good thriller. Then this is for you. It's a life you have to read about to believe and I am really looking forward to the next chapter. It's that good.

As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fully fledged Mencken By Christopher (o.d.c.) Publication date: 1919It is so nice to have this book well-formatted for Kindle. Mencken is one of those authors (Aldous Huxley is another) who were only coming into their prime in 1924, when a major revision to copyright law was passed. Only Mencken's early work has been available from Gutenberg. And of PREJUDICES, the six volumes of collected essays, scans of the first three are at the Open Library, varying in quality from 'unreadable muck' to 'passable.'And Mencken is a joy to read, even today:"There is, in America, no orderly and thorough working out of the fundamental problems of our society; there is only, as one Englishman has said, an eternal combat of crazes. The things of capital importance are habitually discussed, not by men soberly trying to get at the truth about them, but by brummagem Great Thinkers trying only to get kudos of them. We are beset endlessly by quacks-and they are not the less quacks when they happen to be quite honest. In all fields, from politics to pedagogics and from theology to public hygiene, there is a constant emotional obscuration of the true issues, a violent combat of credulities, an inane debasement of scientific curiosity to the level of mob gaping."His gusto is contagious. Few writers have ever had this mix of good humor and seriousness. His essay on Veblen is a tour de force, but so is his celebration of his friend George Jean Nathan. I quote from it because it also seems to describe Mencken himself:"Without abandoning anything essential, without making the slightest concession to the orthodox opinion that he so magnificently disdains, he yet begins to yield to the middle years. The mere shocking of the stupid is no longer as charming as it used to be. What he now offers is rather more gemütlich ; sometimes it even verges upon the instructive.... But I doubt that Nathan will ever become a professor, even if he enjoys the hideously prolonged senility of a William Winter [?? well, he's not around to feel insulted- cd]. He will be full of surprises to the end. With his last gasp he will make a phrase to flabbergast a dolt."
