Who’d have thought a bright, but fairly ordinary young man from middle class America who got just above average grades, dated the same girl throughout high school and went to church most Sundays, would grow up to eventually head a very secretive band of brave individuals-both men and women-who regularly put their lives on the line because they wanted to protect the rest of you. Yet that’s what we did, often sacrificing our personal lives (four marriages for me, all in the book) and our health (countless broken bones, major surgeries, even death) to do it.

Meanwhile you’re just going to have to call me “Papa” like everyone else around the globe has through most of those wildly unpredictable and dangerous years.

However, this book was so incredibly riveting that I felt compelled to let other Amazon members know that it's an honest-to-goodness page turner. I can't wait to see what happens next...hopefully a sequel and movie!

Real life is more scary than fiction By Emmabbooks (I received the Kindle version of this book, free of charge, from Netgalley in return for an honest independent review.)This memoir is written by a former undercover agent working for the US, Canada and various European Governments. He calls himself "Papa". His story starts in 1965 when Papa joins the Marines, and goes through to 2012 when he retires. Imbetween these times Papa has carried out numerous operations - often eliminating people who present a security risk to a government, risking his life (and that of his team) to follow the instructions he has been given. His operations take place all over the world, from Russia to Italy, from Austria to Rendlesham Forest in England. The book covers his recruitment, dealing with moles, gunfights and the planning and execution of many assignments that are shocking and frightening in nature. It also shows the effect that this sort of work has on his home and family life. Due to the covert and sensitive nature of his work, many of the details are sparse, but enough information is given to make the reader fully understand each operation he describes.I found this a fascinating, if very disturbing, book. I would recommend it to everyone, to learn about a world out there that most of us have no idea about. However the book is describing a team of highly committed and hard hitting people who carry out assignments without question. Much of the action described is more scary than any fictional thriller, and may cause you to question that creak you hear downstairs in the dead of night!

By Keith Marshall This book was sent to me by the team at Book Publicity Services for an honest review.I came across this book about the authors own life spent doing all the things i read in fiction.I love my fiction fast paced with realistic action. I have to relate to the characters more than anything. This will make or break a book for me.So to read this book by John Murray about HIS own life out fighting the good fight against the worlds terrorists etc, my interest was definitely piqued.I became totally absorbed by these people and their fight to protect the public, I was hooked almost instantly. The author has a natural voice for telling his stories and it shows on the page.It doesn't come across as anything other than what it is and that's a soldier/spy telling his story. Which is definitely a refreshing change. No rubbish, no political correctness gone mad and no bull crap. It's all about the truth of the job, both the success and failure it's brought.I totally recommend reading this book.If you enjoy spies and assassins in your fiction. Or if you enjoy a good thriller. Then this is for you. It's a life you have to read about to believe and I am really looking forward to the next chapter. It's that good.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fully fledged Mencken By Christopher (o.d.c.) Publication date: 1919It is so nice to have this book well-formatted for Kindle. Mencken is one of those authors (Aldous Huxley is another) who were only coming into their prime in 1924, when a major revision to copyright law was passed. Only Mencken's early work has been available from Gutenberg. And of PREJUDICES, the six volumes of collected essays, scans of the first three are at the Open Library, varying in quality from 'unreadable muck' to 'passable.'And Mencken is a joy to read, even today:"There is, in America, no orderly and thorough working out of the fundamental problems of our society; there is only, as one Englishman has said, an eternal combat of crazes. The things of capital importance are habitually discussed, not by men soberly trying to get at the truth about them, but by brummagem Great Thinkers trying only to get kudos of them. We are beset endlessly by quacks-and they are not the less quacks when they happen to be quite honest. In all fields, from politics to pedagogics and from theology to public hygiene, there is a constant emotional obscuration of the true issues, a violent combat of credulities, an inane debasement of scientific curiosity to the level of mob gaping."His gusto is contagious. Few writers have ever had this mix of good humor and seriousness. His essay on Veblen is a tour de force, but so is his celebration of his friend George Jean Nathan. I quote from it because it also seems to describe Mencken himself:"Without abandoning anything essential, without making the slightest concession to the orthodox opinion that he so magnificently disdains, he yet begins to yield to the middle years. The mere shocking of the stupid is no longer as charming as it used to be. What he now offers is rather more gemütlich ; sometimes it even verges upon the instructive.... But I doubt that Nathan will ever become a professor, even if he enjoys the hideously prolonged senility of a William Winter [?? well, he's not around to feel insulted- cd]. He will be full of surprises to the end. With his last gasp he will make a phrase to flabbergast a dolt."

If you have been struggling with the transition from military service (or any institution) to civilian life then you need this book. Here is what one veteran had to say about Armed For Excellence: "Neil Martin's book is a long time coming. Every single word will resonate soundly with you once established mortals, who unfortunately have fallen foul to inherited beliefs. Neil takes you from Hero-Zero-Hero in 103 pages. He painfully shows you the slide from being the dashing Wing Commander to the broken wannabe, and then how he fights his way back, revealing his current chapter in his life...back on top. For the masses of ex-servicemen who leap forward into civilian life with great expectations, only to fall foul, this book is priceless." T.S. Daly (Royal Navy 1981-2004) My name is Neil Martin and I am a veteran. I joined the Royal Air Force on October 28th, 1980 as an aircraftsman and left 9677 days later as a wing commander. During those 26 ½ years, I served in many theaters including Cyprus, Germany and the Falklands. I also led a team that re-built Basra airport during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. When I left the RAF in 2007 I was convinced that I would crush it in civilian life. How wrong I was! Fast forward five years and life had turned out very differently. Dreams of being a millionaire had long since vanished, the warrior had turned to victim and I felt lost and confused about what the future would hold. How did I go from leading the team that rebuilt Basra airfield to this sorry state? I couldn’t go on like this. Something had to change. 'Armed for Excellence’ is about how I made that change. It took me six months of deep inner work and brutal reflection to answer the question ‘how did I get here?’ but when I did my life turned around. Within a year I owned a 6-figure company, had a fantastic relationship and the car I had always dreamed of. Six months after that I was debt free and most importantly, had finally completed the successful transition to civilian life. ‘Armed for Excellence’ is not a self-help book. It is a self-hope book for any veteran that is lost and dislocated in the civilian world and is ready to make their life as great as their service. In Armed for Excellence: I reveal the exact 5 step system that I used to turn my life around and go from a broken wreck to a 6-figure consultant, with a great relationship and my dream car in just 12 months. I expose how the thing you regard as your greatest asset may be sabotaging your transition to civilian life I guide you through a process that will show you how the values, beliefs, habits and decisions that you make have got you to the place you are now and give you the framework to change them. I give you the step-by-step plan that I used to turn my life around About The Author: Neil Martin, is a veteran with 27 years’ service in the Royal Air Force. He joined the Air Force at the age of 17, and served in many overseas theatres including the Falkland Islands and Iraq during the 2nd Gulf War, before leaving the Service as a wing commander in 2007. However, despite leaving the military as a senior officer within 4 years he was dislocated, desperate and broke. That is when he really took a look at the beliefs he had and whether they were still serving him. Twelve months later he had his own company, a 6 figure income and a life that he loves. His mission is to help fellow veterans prosper in civilian life. Make your life as great as your service. Scroll up and grab your copy today.

A Compass for Civilian Life Transition By Thomas Daly Unfortunately, many an honoured serviceman blindly leaps from the safe arms of Mother Navy, Army or Air Force, and more often than not the blindness is bravado, arrogance, or even ignorance. For those who have made the jump and find that life outside of those safe arms is not what you expected, then this material is tailor-written for you.Neil Martin has scripted his Rise-Fall-Rise story, detailing his successful recovery to a once again proud place in his life. The difference between Neil's work and the work of other Self-Development literature is that Armed For Excellence will resonate more so with you the Ex-Serviceman and Ex-Servicewoman.As with all great Self-Development books, it is but a tool; its the few engaging tasks within this book that makes it a winner. I particularly enjoyed carrying out these tasks as it laser focuses you onto your very own hot spots, whilst also providing your very own remedies.I highly recommend this book to all service personnel, retired or serving, and even friends and family of such persons would definately benefit from reading Neil's book too.

I found myself laughing out loud as well as being quieted and going deeply inside myself to ask what I would have done in some of his circumstance, both inside the RAF and in civilian life. From beginning to end it felt like a flow of "raw" to "magnificent." Neil models authenticity and the willingness to face into what he has created and chosen, and how to shift and turn around what is utterly depleting. What I know is that this message is one that is passionately shared so that others can, perhaps, skip over some of the challenges more easily. Having said that, it is clear that the challenges Neil faced ultimately brought him to this place, as challenges do for us all, and readers are the recipients of his wisdom.

Written with intelligence , warmth and experience . I not only wanted to read Neil`s story but also felt inspired to start a thirty day challenge to set new life goals. You will find it in the book .An enjoyable read especially if you are feeling a bit lost with your life's path . It might just help you find your way. Good luck .
