Offering a unique look at one of America's most famous small towns, "Woodstock - Everyday History," explores a number of chapters that, over the years, have bound the story of Woodstock, N.Y. together. Comprised of essays by the author that have found their way to the pages of the Woodstock Times and other publications, "Woodstock - Everyday History" examines many of the collective challenges that have moved Woodstock forward as a community and the irrepressible spirit of those who would forge their own paths in an ever-changing world.    Through essays that reveal the hardships, joys and struggles of life in a small town - and the impact of the world around it, "Woodstock - Everyday History" also brings forward the belief that local history is more than just a town's "highlights." In many respects, as the title of the text offers, by chronicling the paths of individual Woodstockers, their families and every day community life, we approach a democratization of history through which we better understand the foundation upon which our present lives rest. And, by claiming our own, "everyday history," we also raise the truth about our past above nostalgia and manipulation by commercial interests.    Buffeted by changing times, these are the stories of an independent-minded citizenry that have endeavored to build a community on a foundation of purpose and collective spirit in the heart of the Catskill mountains. Simply put, "Woodstock - Everyday History" shines a welcomed light on Woodstock's "everyday" past while encouraging all to take command of their own stories.

Fully revised and updated, this new edition about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge includes the period from Prince George's birth to the arrival of William and Kate's second child They have been dubbed "the modern royals" by the world’s media, and have not only won the hearts and the loyalty of millions of people around the world, but have helped to re-establish the British royal family as an important, and largely admired, presence in national and international affairs. In short, Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge—also known simply as "William and Kate"—have done as much as anyone to bring the royal family into the 21st century, and to keep it firmly in the national consciousness. The birth of Prince George, their first child, on July 22, 2013, fueled such a worldwide media and public frenzy that it became the most talked-about event of the year. The birth of a future heir, combined with the historic possibility of the first baby to be born not only to a Queen-in-waiting, but to the son of the much mourned Diana, Princess of Wales, accounted for much of the excitement, but that was stoked by a natural affection for the young couple. From the beginning, the world had watched with bated breath as the charming Prince William and his future bride overcame the struggles of university, rumors, and a brief break-up before finally reconciling and becoming engaged. Their ceremonial wedding in 2011—watched by an incredible estimated 2 billion people worldwide—was a defining moment, not only in their young lives, but also for the perception of the monarchy. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have come to embody the spirit and hope of their nation, and their deserved popularity has had a profound effect upon the future of the royal family. As well as a history of the young couple’s romantic relationship, this in-depth book chronicles the next chapters in this modern fairy tale, backed by beautiful photographs, fascinating facts, and expert analysis. Now completely revised and updated to cover the period from the birth of Prince George to the arrival of the new prince or princess in April 2015, the book is both an intriguing insight into modern royalty, and an unrivaled souvenir.

This book is a study of polyandry, wife-selling, and a variety of related practices in China during the Qing dynasty (1644-1912). By analyzing over 1200 legal cases from local and central court archives, Matthew Sommer explores the functions played by marriage, sex, and reproduction in the survival strategies of the rural poor under conditions of overpopulation, worsening sex ratios, and shrinking farm sizes. Polyandry and wife-selling represented opposite ends of a spectrum of strategies. At one end, polyandry was a means to keep the family together by expanding it. A woman would bring in a second husband in exchange for his help supporting her family. In contrast, wife sale was a means to survive by breaking up a family: a husband would secure an emergency infusion of cash while his wife would escape poverty and secure a fresh start with another man.Even though Qing law prohibited both practices under the rubric “illicit sexual relations,” Sommer shows how magistrates charged with propagating and enforcing a fundamentalist Confucian vision of female chastity tried to cope with their social reality in the face of daunting poverty. This contradiction illuminates both the pragmatism of routine adjudication and the increasingly dysfunctional nature of the dynastic state in the face of mounting social crisis. By casting a spotlight on the rural poor and the experiences of both men and women, Sommer provides an alternative to the standard paradigms of women’s history that have long dominated scholarship on gender and sexuality in late imperial China.

Polyandry and Wife-Selling in Qing Dynasty China: Survival Strategies and Judicial Interventions, by Matthew H. Sommer

From the Inside Flap “China historians have been waiting a long time for this book, and scholars of sexuality and gender who work on other regions of the early modern world—even if they don’t know they have been waiting for it—are going to be mesmerized. There is nothing else like it in print.”—Gail Hershatter, author of The Gender of Memory: Rural Women and China's Collective Past "What was the meaning of marriage, family, and sexuality for the many impoverished Chinese struggling to survive in the High Qing? In this beautifully researched study, Matthew Sommer patiently reconstructs the logic of difficult and often desperate choices made by men and women whose lives emerge, piecemeal, in the vast court records of the long eighteenth century. His formidable knowledge of and great empathy for his subjects make this work a joy to read. This is an essential study for understanding gender, family, and sexuality in the early modern world."—Paula Findlen, Professor of History, Stanford University

About the Author Matthew H. Sommer teaches Chinese history at Stanford University. He is the author of Sex, Law, and Society in Late Imperial China.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great social history By E. N. Anderson This major work opens up a whole world of illegal and semi-legal practices in Qing China: wife-selling, polyandry, prostitution, and various intermediate situations. Dr. Sommer shows that a combination of desperate poverty and a very skewed sex ratio (due to selective infanticide or neglect) led to many arrangements to share women or to move women from men unable to support them to men who could. Life was horribly difficult for anyone less than affluent, and sickness or accident could submerge a person rapidly. Many men became "bare sticks," unable to find or keep any woman at all. Many who did have wives were reduced to selling them because of misfortune. However, there were interesting con games attending this--men who tricked husbands into selling their wives, and then prostituted them; men who sold their wives and then brought them right back, to cheat the buyer out of the sale price--a practice known as "flying a falcon" (because the falcon returns to the falconer). Women had a surprising amount of agency in all this. They could refuse to be sold, cause endless trouble, go home to their parents, or go to law (at least if their natal families were supportive). Sometimes, a woman flown as a falcon decided she liked the intended victim better than her husband, and refused to return. All these not-very-legal procedures often led to fights that ended in murders--producing the most dramatic of the case files that Dr. Sommer draws on. He has gone through hundreds of complicated and difficult files to write this book.Dr. Sommer stresses the poverty and desperation of the people in question, but some of the characters involved were less charitable. A magistrate referred to wife-sellers and other marginal characters as "useless wastrels"--"useless" is a seriously insulting word in Chinese. Wives tended to refer to husbands that sold them as "liking to eat, but too lazy to work," also a forceful phrase in Chinese. The world of the poor merged with the underworld, as so often happens globally.Dr. Sommer concludes that the situation was not so much one of exploiting and oppressing women as of a system that was ferociously hard on anyone unfortunate. This will be debated....What I can say is that this book is an instant classic, and a huge contribution to social history. It is also a delight to an anthropologist (like me), because of the enormous ethnographic detail in the stories and because of the light it throws on kinship and marriage, always the favorite anthropological field of enquiry.

The 1950s were heady days, indeed! L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics had just been promoted by John W. Campbell, Jr. in Astounding Science Fiction magazine. The world was ablaze with Dianetic groups resulting from Campbell's influence and Hubbard's new book -- doctors, lawyers, engineers, mathematicians, teachers -- everyone, including the common man was out to become "clear," a superior beingness promised by Hubbard's first book, "Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health." The first of several Hubbard Dianetic Research Foundations was established and then quickly folded, bankrupted, and then all but one was bought out in Federal court by a new oil well millionare, Donald Purcell. Purcell and Hubbard set up The Hubbard Dianetic Center in Wichita, Kansas. Hubbard lectures often but all is not rosy in "sanity" land as Purcell wants Hubbard to suppress some of his research findings. They break up. One of the auditors, Perry A. Chapdelaine, Sr., B.A., M.A., H.D.A. goes on to Minneapolis, MN where he meets and audits Ronald B. Howes. Howes appears to be a genuine "clear." His attributes seem to be what the future promises for a newly evolved Homo sapiens. Many flock to Howes' doorway and go away convinced that he is not just clear, but also superior to most of us. A tape is made immediately after Howes' auditing, "Prologue to Survival," I & II. Chapdelaine travels the US convincing people that a "clear" is possible. The Dianetic field is rejuvenated. Hubbard goes on to England and then on further to set up the Sea Org, an organization designed to keep the techonology working, to insure it is not corrupted. He also establishes a new religion, the Church of Scientology, charged with delivering the correct technology. Chapdelaine writes and publishes a pamphlet, "Health & Happiness." Howes is published in "Dr. Howes Discusses Humanics" by some of his admiring followers. The giants are now dead but the legacy of John W. Campbell, Jr., Lafayette Ron Hubbard and Ronald B. Howes continues to grow. Yes, indeed, those were heady days! Read the raw truth here -- L Ron Hubbard's transition from research to fantasy -- presented by one survivor, Perry A. *Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the cult and the massacre *Includes Jim Jones' quotes about his life and the massacre *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "We didn't commit suicide; we committed an act of revolutionary suicide protesting the conditions of an inhumane world." - Jim Jones The United States has never had a shortage of cults based on religious teachings and charismatic leaders, but perhaps none are as infamous as Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple, which remain notorious for the mass murder-suicide event in Jonestown, Guyana on November 18, 1978, during which nearly 900 people drank cyanide-laced Flavor Aid, including nearly 300 children. To this day, “drinking the Kool-Aid” is a popular phrase in America to refer to people who blindly follow a person or idea without thought, and the event at Jonestown was the deadliest deliberate act involving Americans in history until the 9/11 attacks. In addition to those deaths, Peoples Temple members also murdered a handful of others on the same day, including journalists, a member trying to leave Jonestown, and Congressman Leo Ryan. Almost from birth, Jones believed he had a higher calling, and after being immersed in various Christian churches and both political and religious doctrine, Jones founded the Peoples Temple in Indianapolis in 1955, when he was still in his mid-20s. While that might have been an unusual course in life for most Americans, Jones was hardly the first to take such a path, and indeed, his group expanded at a remarkable pace in the 1960s, which included a move to California after Jones claimed to foresee a nuclear attack on Chicago and the destruction of Indianapolis. By the 1970s, services at the group’s Temple attracted thousands of visitors, even as Jones increasingly criticized Christianity and the Bible. Of course, none of the previous locations earned the notoriety of Jonestown, which the Peoples Temple established in Guyana along the northern coast of South America in the mid-‘70s. Meant to be a "socialist paradise" and “sanctuary” from America’s “creeping fascism,” over 900 members headed to the new settlement by 1978. That November, Congressman Leo Ryan arrived in Jonestown to investigate various claims about the Peoples Temple and met with some members who wished to defect from the group. In response, Jones issued a tape decrying outsiders’ efforts and directing members to commit suicide, and when some pushed back, he chided them: “Stop these hysterics. This is not the way for people who are socialists or communists to die. No way for us to die. We must die with some dignity.” Survivors described the ensuing event, during which children drank the poison first and were followed by parents who lay down to die as a family. Others indicated that Jones had simulated mass suicides on a couple of other occasions before to test members’ loyalty as well, so people remained unsure whether the event was real, even as Jones told them, “I tell you, I don't care how many screams you hear, I don't care how many anguished cries...death is a million times preferable to ten more days of this life. If you knew what was ahead of you – if you knew what was ahead of you, you'd be glad to be stepping over tonight." Although many began to worry once they saw the poison take effect in others, most of those who drank the poison were dead within 5 minutes, while Jones apparently shot himself in the head. Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple: The History of the Most Notorious Cult and Mass Murder-Suicide in American History chronicles the notorious cult and the mass murder-suicide. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Peoples Temple like never before.

Good Overview By Michael Lapelosa This book is the story of the infamous Jim Jones and the People's Temple religious cult, which resulted in the mass murder-suicide in Jonestown, Guyana on November 18, 1978, during which nearly 900 people committed suicide . It was deadliest deliberate act involving Americans in history until the 9/11 attacks. The book describes the unusual childhood of Jim Jones who always believed he had a higher calling, and founded the Peoples Temple in Indianapolis in 1955. The author uses extensive quotes from Jones and various members to describe the events which led to the change from a religious group to a zombie like cult of personality. The narrative is augmented with excellent photographs. The facts leading up to the mass suicide are re-told in straightforward prose. However, what is missing, I found is the motivation of the people who joined the People's Temple, gave all of their possessions to Jim Jones, obeyed him without dissent, moved entire families to an isolated area of Guyana and finally, poisoned themselves and their loved ones. The book discusses this only superficially and to me, this is the most compelling and interesting part of the story.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Why? By Modupe Hendricks this book is extremely difficult to give any stars to because of the subject matter. The book handled the topic of Jim Jones and the People’s Temple in a concise manner. I do not understand why the members of Jim Jones’s church followed him like he was the Messiah. The book alluded to the fact that members of the church were kept constantly busy and had very little sleep. The book did persuade me to read/ find more information about Jim Jones and the People’s Temple. I will rate this book a three because of the distasteful topic. This book is excellent for providing brief and concise information on this topic.
