Humor, insight and the occasional razor blade fill the delightful stories in "Pretty Boy Floyd's Clarinet." I was especially moved by the novella-length title story, a coming-of-age tale of music and mayhem in Dust-Bowl Oklahoma.Shakely, who is the recipient of the Oklahoma Book Award for fiction, never strays far from his home in Indian Territory, but his stories are universal. A must read

By Barry Yelton Jack Shakely's latest book is a treasure trove of homespun stories that both warm the heart and tease the imagination. Shakely is known for telling stories in a unique and folksy fashion which make reading them a particular pleasure.His knowledge of Oklahoma, its people, and traditions is impressive. Each story herein is different in nature. The one constant in Shakely's writing is that it holds the reader in the time and place. The writing draws one along in a sometimes comfortable, sometimes startling way. You feel as though you are sitting by a fireside with the author telling the tale as though he had told it a thousand times with the same enthusiasm and warmth each time it is told.The story of Pretty Boy Floyd's clarinet is so unique and surprising, it alone is worthy of an award.
