A Chiricahua Apache of the Chokonen band, Cochise (c. 1810–1874) was one of the most celebrated Indian leaders of his time, battling both American intrusions and Mexican troops in the turbulent border region of nineteenth-century Arizona.

Much of what we know of Cochise has come down to us in military reports, eyewitness accounts, letters, and numerous interviews the usually reticent chief granted in the last decade of his life. Cochise: Firsthand Accounts of the Chiricahua Apache Chief brings together the most revealing of these documents to provide the most nuanced, multifaceted portrait possible of the Apache leader. In particular, the interviews, many printed here for the first time, are the closest we will ever get to autobiographical material on this notable man, his life, and his times.

Edwin R. Sweeney, a preeminent historian of the Apaches and their leaders, has assembled this collection from U.S. military records, Indian agency reports, U.S. and Mexican newspapers and journals, and transcribed personal recollections. Throughout we hear the voices of those who knew Cochise well or observed him firsthand, including one who had never "met his equal with a lance" and another who attested that "no Apache warrior can draw an arrow to the head and send it farther with more ease than he." We get two distinctly different views of the murderous events that led to the infamous Bascom Affair, in which Cochise and an American lieutenant squared off in a spiraling war of revenge. And we gain rare and unexpected insight into Cochise's thoughts during the Chiricahuas' move to the reservation at Tularosa.

In addition to a close-up picture of a pivotal figure in western history, Cochise offers accounts of a vanished world from people who lived in that world.

Review Carrying forward the quality of his previous books on the Chiricahua Apaches, Sweeney not only deals authoritatively with the man he came to know intimately, but gives voice to him. In the chief’s words, Sweeney captures the essence of Cochise and his times.—Robert M. Utley author of Geronimo“Those who have read independent scholar Ed Sweeney’s well-researched works . . . might think they know far more about Cochise than the average reader. And they would be right. But there is more to learn, and Sweeney once again makes it easy."—Wild West“[Cochise] not only provides a firsthand look into the life of Cochise and occasional glimpses into the indomitable leader’s worldview, but also sheds light on nineteenth-century Borderlands history, federal Indian policies, the trials and tribulations of frontier troops, and the historical geography of southeastern Arizona and its periphery.”—New Mexico Historical Review

About the Author Retired as a professional accountant, Edwin R. Sweeney is an independent scholar and the author of Cochise: Chiricahua Apache Chief; Mangas Coloradas: Chief of the Chiricahua Apaches; and From Cochise to Geronimo: The Chiricahua Apaches, 1874–1886.

Outstanding By Dr RN Watt This book is a wonderful addition to the history of the Chiricahua Apaches in general and in particular to the record of Cochise, one of their truly great leaders. The key attraction to me, as a historian, is that the book gives us a wealth of eyewitness accounts of Cochise ranging from friends through some surprisingly neutral on to some quite hostile accounts of the Chiricahua Apache leader. For those of you deeply interested in the Chiricahua Apaches I don't need to tell you to read the notes accompanying each eyewitness account - they are simply packed with additional information. For those of you new to this topic I would recommend that you read Dan Thrapp's Conquest of Apacheria which will give you a good overview of the general topic. Move on to Sweeney's biography of Cochise as the immediate background to reading this book. You will not regret the effort.Dr Robert N. WattUniversity of Birmingham, UK

By Wyatt Burp Very interesting, although I think Sweeney is a little naive about the truthfulness and integrity of Cochise. Tevis knew Cochise personally and described him as a scoundrel which is probably accurate, but Sweeney routinely discounts those first hand accounts which shatter his preconceptions. He also discounts Cremony, for the same reason. It's nonsense to say that Cochise was a peaceable Apache before the Bascom affair. He was stealing, killing, kidnapping before Bascom arrived. Sweeney seems to suffer from the "noble red Man" syndrome as espoused by James Fenimore Cooper. The last 40 years have seen a preponderance of "politically correct" revisionist histories of the Apache wars.

You should read that first before getting this one. This book gives personal views of the Apache chief which are otherwise difficult to find. Also check out the personal account book " Making Peace with Cochise".

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the standoffs by both sides *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents In the summer of 1992, federal agents surrounded a few acres of land isolated in Ruby Ridge, Idaho, where Randy Weaver, his wife Vicki, his 14 year old son Samuel, and his three young daughters were staying. Weaver was a former Green Beret who had come to the attention of the ATF and other federal agencies for a number of reasons, including associations with white supremacist groups and the possession of illegal shotguns. After being arrested and released on bail in 1991, Weaver failed to appear in court when necessary and was thus treated as a fugitive, bringing in the involvement of U.S. Marshals. For the rest of that year, attempts to bring in Weaver were rebuffed, and Weaver threatened to shoot anyone who came to his cabin to bring him in. Federal agents from the U.S. Marshal Service and FBI surrounded the area on August 21 and wound up engaging in a firefight that ended in the deaths of 14 year old Samuel, one of the family dogs, and Marshal Bill Degan, who was shot by Weaver’s friend Kevin Harris. On August 22, the federal agents were given new rules of engagement that were much more lax when it came to authorizing the use of deadly force. Instead of using the standard FBI policy that authorized deadly force to prevent suffering grievous harm as a method of self-defense, the agents, including snipers, were given the green light to shoot Randy and Kevin Harris if they were carrying weapons, regardless of whether they were actually targeting the federal agents. They were also authorized to shoot any adult after they surrendered if they were carrying a weapon. Before negotiators could even reach the scene on the 22nd, an FBI sniper shot Randy in the back as he headed towards the shed where his son’s body lay. As Randy, his 16 year old daughter Sara, and Harris headed back for cover in the cabin, the same sniper fired a shot at Harris’ chest, which wounded him but also struck and killed Vicki, who was standing behind the cabin door holding her 10 month old daughter. The Branch Davidians were an obscure religious sect located in Texas, but members of the group led by David Koresh in Waco, Texas stockpiled enough weaponry to catch the attention of the federal government. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) ultimately decided to serve arrest and search warrants at the compound for the possession of illegal weapons, even though they fully expected it would require a raid that could potentially turn fatal. The ATF hoped to use the element of surprise when it commenced the raid on February 28, but the Branch Davidians were ready for them, which led to an intense firefight between the two sides that resulted in the deaths of 4 ATF agents and a number of Branch Davidians. With that, the FBI got involved, and federal agents settled in for a standoff that would last about 50 days, trying everything from negotiating to using sleep deprivation tactics to coerce the Branch Davidians into ending the confrontation. Finally, on April 19, government agents breached the compound’s walls and tried to use gas to flush the Branch Davidians out peacefully, but a series of fires broke out and quickly spread, killing the vast majority of the occupants inside, including many young children. Naturally, controversy spread over how the siege ended; for example, while most believe the Branch Davidians intentionally started the fires as part of a mass suicide, others insist it was the fault of the ATF. In addition to influencing how the government approached potential future conflicts with other groups, Waco’s most important legacy was that it enraged people who already had an anti-government bent. The most notable, of course, was Timothy McVeigh, who conducted what was at the time the deadliest terrorist attack in American history in 1995.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. interestingly informative By James Stravers Most books dealing with either Ruby Ridge or Waco generally run between 250 to 350 pages. So it was quite an undertaking for Charles River Editors to condence BOTH subjects down into one 70 odd page booklet. But they did. And not a bad job of it either I might add. R.R. and W. appears to present a "fair and balanced" version of the events from both sides of each story. (something FOX NEWS would never do) This being a review of the book and not of events.....but......in Waco our government, in a military style operation, using tanks and tear gas annihilated American citizens in a religious sect. Do the words inexcusable, unpardenable, CRIMINAL pop into your mind?

Juan Pablo Duarte: The Humanist / Juan Pablo Duarte: El humanista is a pioneering book. It is the first bilingual (Spanish and English) book containing the writings of Juan Pablo Duarte, the founding father of the Dominican Republic. With this selection we seek to expose part of Duarte’s thought as he expressed it at key moments in his life. Hence, the decision to prepare a book that was completely bilingual. The Spanish writings included in this book are exact copies of the manuscripts preserved by Rosa Duarte, one of his sisters, described by historians as the closest to him.

0 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An old man's wife dies and a ghost dog takes her place. By A Customer I was sort of mislead in this novel because it's hard to know who's talking or who they're talking about because it doesn't tell you. Overall, I think that it's a great novel of life, loss, mystery, and hope. There are many humorous and sad parts to this story , and lots of dialogue. I was always wondering what was going to happen next, so each chapter was a surprise to me. The beginning of this story is quite sad, because Sam's wife dies right away, the white dog comes into the story after that to keep Sam happy, so I think the mood of this story has a roller-coaster motion because it keeps on changing from happy to sad to happy etc... I would reccommend this novel to anyone who likes to read, people who have experienced the death of a loved one, people who like emotionally moving novels, or od aged people. If you think they should make a movie out of this story, they already have. You may have already seen the movie, but usually the book is alittle different than the movie due to the modifications, and what takes a half page to describe in a book may take only two seconds to describe in a movie. I've never seen the movie myself, so I can't tell you anything about the movie, except that it would be similar to the book. I don't know any books that I've reas that are similar to this, so I could say that this is one of a kind. There are probably other similar novels out there, perhaps you have read one that is an emotionally moving one with a roller- coaster mood. I personally favor adventure, classic si-fi, or horror novels such as Hatchet, Frankenstein, War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, or Treasure Island. I git tired during some of the parts of this novel because it seemed too calm for me. You'll really like this if you like peaceful novels, but I, on the other hand, prefer more violent novels, because they keep me awake and make me pay more attention to the story. I guess Forrest Gump fabs would like this novel, too because it can be funny and serious at the same time, which is why I like it.

The first volume of Keenan's biography of Josemaria Escriva, The Day the Bells Rang Out, (Batchwood Press http://www.amazon.com/dp/1463768699) covered the life of Opus Dei's founder from childhood to November 1937, when, in the middle of the Spanish Civil War, he and his companions were planning to escape from the "Red" zone of Spain to be able to continue their apostolate in freedom. This new volume picks up the story and sees Escriva on his "path through the mountains" to the other side of Spain via the Pyrenees, Andorra and Lourdes, France. The title, however, has a much deeper sense: in spreading the message of Opus Dei, Escriva and his followers were cutting a new path of holiness and apostolate in the world, and when they met difficulties, which came abundantly, he would remind them of the words of Scripture, inter medium montium pertransibunt aquae - the waters will make a path through the mountains (Ps 103/104: 10). Notably, Escriva quoted this verse in the first chapter of his classic work The Way: "Let those very obstacles give you strength. God's grace will not fail you: Inter medium montium pertransibunt aquae! You shall pass through the mountains! Does it matter that you have to curtail your activity for the moment if afterwards, like a spring which has been compressed, you will reach incomparably farther than you ever dreamed?" The Path Through the Mountains is divided into three parts, the book consisting of 87 short chapters, ending up with Escriva's first stay in Rome in June 1946. The Spanish Civil War ended in 1939, just months before the outbreak of World War 2. Keenan shows Escriva and his companions living in dire poverty, filled with irrepressible good spirits and fired with zeal for apostolate, no matter what. The book fills in the rather sketchy picture of Escriva's life at this time offered by Joffé's film There Be Dragons, supporting Joffé's inspired artistic impression with historical facts. Far from being a dry, historical document, however, the book is enlivened from the start with the humour, homely details and breathtaking vision that were so evident in Escriva himself, as a result of his deep, active faith and love.

This story follows the founder from the years of the Spanish civil war through World War 2, and his building Opus Dei in one city to an international one. There are many direct quotes from the Founder"s journal. Those whose only acquaintance with Opus Dei is through Dan. Brown should read this book.

In American Mojo: Lost and Found, Peter D. Kiernan, New York Times bestselling and award-winning author, focuses on America’s greatest challenge―and opportunity―restoring the middle class to its full promise and potential.

Our educated, skilled, and motivated middle class was the cornerstone of America’s postwar economic might, but the country’s dynamic core has struggled and changed dramatically through the last three decades. Kiernan’s extensively researched story, told through individual histories, shows how the middle class flourished under unique circumstances following World War II and details how our middle class has been rocked and shaped by events abroad as much as at home. By excluding too many Americans, the middle class we reverently recall was fractured from the beginning.

What emerges through his storytelling is a picture of middle-class decline and opportunity that is fuller, more moving and profound, and ultimately more useful in terms of charting a path forward than other examinations. His unique global perspective is a vital ingredient in charting the way ahead. This new frontier thesis shows that middle-class greatness is again within our grasp―if we take some powerful medicine and seize the global opportunity. America possesses the skills and talent the world needs. Americans must embrace what brought our middle class to prominence in the first place―our American Mojo―before it is too late and other countries steal the march.

All that is at stake is the soul of our nation.

American Mojo: Lost and Found: Restoring our Middle Class Before the World Blows By, by Peter D. Kiernan

Review "Kiernan chronicles, in highly entertaining fashion, the American middle class's rise over the course of the 20th century, as well as its currently imperiled state. Observing that "80% of the world's purchasing power, 92% of the world's economic growth, and 95% of the world's consumers" are now outside the U.S., Kiernan asks whether Americans are in danger of being left behind. Each chapter begins with the story of a person who participated, and in some cases played a key part, in the progress of the American middle class, from the potato magnate who made McDonald's possible, to Betty Friedan and her contribution to unleashing the economic potential of American women. The stories touch on many topics, including the post-WWII housing boom, the economic impacts of racism, the culture war's origins in the late 1960s, and Reaganomics . . . this is a riveting read that sets out not to draw definite solutions from past successes and failures, but to educate the general readership with storytelling." ―Publishers Weekly"Peter Kiernan has written the book that needed to be written―and read―right now. His documentation of how America’s middle class rose and is now teetering is the wake-up call this country needs to hear. His incisive storytelling, trenchant observations and clear-eyed solutions make this a must read." ―Geoffrey Canada, president, Harlem Children’s Zone“Peter Kiernan is a man with a big vision―for the middle class. In this robust and imaginative analysis of how the middle class must be secured he cuts through the fog and presents a clear vision for a new course. Bravo.” ―Tom Brokaw"Thoughtful and thought-provoking, American Mojo: Lost and Found is ultimately an optimistic resource of practical and proactive macroeconomic strategies for the twenty-first century, highly recommended." ―Midwest Book Review"American Mojo is a page-turner of a gripping story, one that reads like fiction but in fact weaves the drama of the breakdown of our healthy middle class. And then hope brims from the pages as Peter Kiernan guides us toward a truly possible future where the jewel of our nation, our middle class, could actually shine again for real. If you care about America, there is no more important book out there today." ―Diane Nyad, champion ocean swimmer, author, and frequent public speaker for social betterment

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. In twenty years the global middle class will be unrecognizable. Why? Because outside our border lies 80 percent of the world’s purchasing power, 92 percent of the world’s economic growth, and 95 percent of the world’s consumers. And they are hungry for change in a way that should be familiar. Today, dozens of nations have explicit plans to create their own middle class miracle. A billion more middle class members should emerge in the next decade. What does that surge mean for the restoration and livelihood of the American middle class? Like we did in the fifties, these countries are short-cutting their way to a dynamic middle class by providing it with conditions to prosper. Meanwhile we drift along, vaguely concerned that our middle class is shrinking, that wages are sideways at best, and that our population is changing right before our eyes. If we have no plan at all, what does that mean for our prospects? We still look at middle class problems myopically―as purely domestic affairs. 1955 is dead and gone. This book assumes the missing global perspective ignored by domestic policy ostriches who so often dominate discussion. When it comes to the middle class, all the world’s a stage.

Enthralling, Clear and Constructive--A Realistic Blueprint By Peter Hillman This timely, fresh and engaging book is the one everybody running for President will wish s/he could have written. It takes an author unencumbered by political ambition, but with a wealth of hands-on corporate, world and philanthropic experience, to give us this essential reading, now. It takes an unfettered private citizen, not enmeshed in academia or governmental/think tank agendas and revolving doors, to home in on what's worked and what hasn't; to personalize and synthesize; to refuse to offer up tired bromides but instead to think inside and out of the box.One need not agree with every observation and idea and the author wouldn't want you to. But his intelligence and perception are striking, the book is a "page-turner" and his optimism, while not unbridled, is inspiring.(Full disclosure: Pete and I majored together in American Civilization with the same remarkable professors, materials and discussions.)The prose is vibrant and compelling. Two or three-sentence paragraphs of observations/ideas flow from contextual material. The invitation is to the reader to think, agree, disagree, diverge, modify, alter but above all to think about, our broken, but vitally needed, middle class. Each chapter begins with a vignette about an individual in our history who played a formative role, because part of Kiernan's thesis is that our history abounds with individuals who were willing to make profound economic and societal changes for the greater good; to get back on track (to re-attain our "mojo"), we must drive anew that spirit of individual empowerment and responsibility.Part One traces the post WW II growth of a large and prosperous middle class, while pointing out looming stress fractures, or how the nation could wind up being a victim of its own successes. Kiernan also traces the seismic changes in national politics that led to Reagan's ascendancy and polar shifts in policy. The author supports his points with a winning combination of empirical, anecdotal, learned evidence--and heaps of common sense. He resists: "On the one hand, on the other...perhaps...could argue in hindsight...it may be seen...so-and-so might have been thinking..." Instead, the voice is crystal-clear, as a clarion call to understanding and action must be.Part Two is "Found"--middle class mojo growth buds and sprouts here and there despite the devastating set-backs of the Great Recession. A good example is the work and vision of Geoff Canada with Harlem Children's Zones--an effort Kiernan knew well from his philanthropic work at the Robin Hood Foundation. This and other examples illustrate nicely Kiernan's belief in the power of each of us, particularly the privileged, to help individually and ally with business and government to re-energize our middle class. Two spectacular, beat-all chapters are 10 ("The One Per Cent Solution...A time for wealth to lead the charge"), and 18 ("Back to Work...The new abnormal of job creation"). They are chock-full of practical, viable and creative ideas, designed to attract consensus thinking and action. He recognizes well the explosion of prosperity and new middle classes across the developed world--with each country's own groups left behind-- and acknowledges that our unique circumstances post WW II are those of a by-gone era. He acknowledges painfully that not everyone will find a satisfying place in a re-invigorated middle class. All those moons ago, we learned that a special blend-- of courage, willingness to pull oars together, free expression, ingenuity and allegiance of individuals in a position to give and make sacrifice-- birthed and nurtured this country's great growth. Now, many journeys later, Kiernan again finds that "[h]appily, everywhere in the world you go, there is an abiding confidence that we possess something special that drives us to higher ambition and accomplishment." It is difficult to deny that, or to conceive of a more readable, impartial and stirring modern call to action.

Solid Compass Direction By Bing West This is an account of how to thread the needle between liberals who want to regulate a redistribution of a fixed economic pie and conservatives who believe less regulation will increase the size of the pie. Both claim their preferred path increases the income of the middle class, elastic by any definition. The author argues for less regulation and increased government incentives for mostly export-related expansionism that will incentivize our dynamic middle class to exert its inherent mo-jo.That is an over-simplification. This author at his best when you as the reader digest the data in each of his ~200 sub-topic essays, before moving on to the next. In other words, there's too many data, insights and provocations to grapple with and reach a conclusion in three or four hours. Take your time with this book. It is a compendium. The one subject not addressed is the underground economy. Supposedly $2 trillion and ~10% of our GDP occurs off the books; that is, without taxation. If so, then some classes of economic Americans are doing better than the data in the book suggest. That is a quibble. Overall, this is a non-political, sweeping analysis best digested in bite-sized readings. It probably takes about six separate sessions. Read, come back to it a few days later, and eventually finish. You will then think - wow, how can anyone, no matter his elected office or his brain power, control the economy of an entire nation, be it America, Greece or China? It cannot be done. There are cultural dynamics and national "take-off" moments of manifest destiny that overwhelm and should humble any macro economic authority. However, the policymaker does set a general direction. Without Hamilton, we would not be the country we are now.Keirnan's compass guide has the ring of sensibility, sophisticated but readable. A read worth the time. A solid compass direction to compare to what we are offered over the next 18 months.

LET'S NOT HAVE HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF By Robin Leigh Morgan I received a hardcover edition of this book through a GoodReads.com giveaway and the following is my honest opinion for it.This book is a far cry from the myriad of genres of fiction books and memoirs I’ve reviewed to date. It’s not the type of book readers can read right through without taking any sort of break; they need to absorb each one chapter one at a time to reap the greatest benefits this book has to offer them. The manner in which Mr. Kiernan has written his fact-filled book causes readers to want to read more by eagerly turning to the next page, which is usually not prevalent in books of this genre. Taking readers on a time travel trip to the past to view FDR taking us out of the Depression the entire nation had still been reeling in when he took office, adds a glimmer of hope for the middle class in seeing some light at the end of the tunnel to their present economic condition. One needs to look at the economic history of this country in order to avoid any possible repeat of the faux pas which has already transpired in the past. For his thought-provoking endeavor I’m giving Mr. Kiernan 5 STARS.

‘Alistair Moffat’s Bannockburn is a pacy account of the days leading up to the battle’ - Saturday Herald ‘A carefully considered account of a well-trodden historical event, Moffat enlightens and educates with an up-to-date interpretation of a battle firmly cemented in Scottish history’ - Scottish Field ‘Mr Moffat’s account of the duel between Bruce and de Bohun is totally gripping and he is particularly enthralling about the councils of war onthe eve of the second day’s battle’ - Country Life From the Ice Age to the recent Scottish Referendum, historian and author Alistair Moffat explores the history of the Scottish nation. As well as focusing on key moments in the nation’s history such as the Battle of Bannockburn and the Jacobite Risings, Moffat also features other episodes in history that are perhaps less well documented. From prehistoric timber halls to inventions and literature, Moffat’s tale explores the drama of battle, change, loss and invention interspersed with the lives of ordinary Scottish folk, the men and women who defined a nation.

By I Ross McDougall Wonderful history, very well written and spiced up by interesting personal tidbits and anecdotes that keep the reader's attention. Very complete reference list for those needing additional original data. The prehistoric and very early historic section are excellent and his work on ancestry especially good. I only wish this had been the history book of Scotland that I had in school 60 years ago. I am a great fan of Alistair Moffat and although living more than 5000 miles away I feel I have a front row seat at the Battles of Stirling Bridge, Bannockburn and Culloden.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book introduces many new Christians ideas, such as original sin By Israel Drazin See my brief description of the origin of the Apocrypha in my review of the first book of Esdras. I wrote in essence that many books composed before and just after the onset of the Common Era, were composed by Jews and sometimes by Christians with generally pious intent. When the Hebrew Bible was translated into Greek for the Greek speaking Jews who did not understand Hebrew, so they would know what is in their "holy books," about a dozen of these volumes were incorporated into the translation, which was called Septuagint. About a dozen of these writings were included in the first translation of the Bible, when it was translated into Greek, but were later not included in the Hebrew Bible called Tanach, an acronym denoting the Bible's three parts: Torah (the five books of Moses), Neviim (the prophets), and Ketuvim (inspired but not prophetical writings, such as Esther and Ruth). Protestants and Jews call these non-canon books Apocrypha, the hidden or secret books. The name was given these books around 400 CE by Jerome who translated the Bible into Latin and included the books. His translation is called Vulgate, similar to the word vulgar, which had a positive meaning in ancient time, "for the people." When the Bible was translated into English in 1611 and called the King James Version, the dozen additions were included. They remain part of the Roman Catholic Bible today, but are not part of the Protestant and Jewish canon. Protestants and Jews call these non-canon books Apocrypha, the hidden or secret books. My review of Esdras I contains more information. The Second Book of Esdras (the name is also written Ezra), composed after the death of the brutal Roman ruler Nero, who died in 68 CE. It is an apocalypse. Chapters 1, 2, 15, and 16 are Christian additions, although it is possible that even other parts were influenced by early Christian thinking. It is an attempt to explain the existence of human problems and pain and to justify how God works in this world. It does so in a somewhat supernatural way, somewhat like the New Testament book Revelations. The book imagines a scene in Babylon in 556 BCE during the exile of the Jews to Babylon, which began when the first temple was destroyed in 586 BCE. The author asks: Why are the Israelites enslaved to the pagan Babylonians? An angel comes and answers his question. He is told about the resurrection of the dead, the final judgment, the messianic age, and that only some people will be saved. In 3:21, there is the Christian notion of original sin: Adam "transgressed and was overcome, as were also all who were descended from him." None of these notions are in the Hebrew Bible.

*Includes pictures *Profiles the forgotten sidekicks of icons like Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and Billy the Kid *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents Space may be the final frontier, but no frontier has ever captured the American imagination like the “Wild West”, which still evokes images of dusty cowboys, outlaws, gunfights, gamblers, and barroom brawls over 100 years after the West was settled. A constant fixture in American pop culture, the 19th century American West continues to be vividly and colorful portrayed not just as a place but as a state of mind. In Charles River Editors’ Legends of the West series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America’s most famous frontier figures in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. The Wild West has made legends out of many men, and some of them, like Wild Bill Hickok and Jesse James, were celebrities during their lives. Indeed, the history of the West is often taught as though it was a history of larger-than-life figures like Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane, Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and several other men and women, some good, some bad, and many in between. Their actions have helped forge America’s common heritage. While these figures are still popular today, they didn’t live, fight, and die in isolation; they all had networks of friends and part-time associates, people who helped them escape from jail or capture wanted felons. Of course, these people also stood in their shadow. Western lore has given them the dismissive name of “sidekicks”, but a closer look reveals that these lesser-known figures lived colorful lives of their own. This book profiles 4 of the most important but forgotten sidekicks of the West, from Sherman McMaster, who participated in Wyatt Earp’s Vendetta Ride in the wake of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, to Doc Scurlock, who was an outlaw alongside Billy the Kid. Legends of the West: Forgotten Sidekicks of the Wild West traces the history of some of the important figures in the West and the roles they played in some of history’s seminal moments. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about some of the West’s forgotten sidekicks like never before, in no time at all.

Nice Introduction to Some Great Characters By Bill Anderson Length: 85 pages.Aside from the inclusion of an apostrophe when the writer was stating a plural (Earps) early in this entertaining summary of four notorious characters of the Old West, this book is free of typos, grammatical errors and whatnot.I wish I had thought about writing a book about the supporting actors, if you will, that aided and abedded those more famous, and infamous, heroes and villains on the frontier.I especially took interest in the dealings of McMaster, an intriguing figure indeed. Gets one to thinking...who were the outlaws and who were the good guys?A fun, easy read for any history buff.

Interesting, but too many names and compacted information By Kindle Customer RWM The problem with short books like this is the compaction of information. While I learned of a few obscure names, too much other information and other names were included. Often the headlined subject was pushed aside with many others added confusing this reader.

‘I confess to several moments of mixed excitement and apprehension … It was a clear night, the wind and tide were in my favour. I felt really up for it.’Kayak Across the Atlantic is an extraordinary first-hand account of the first ever single-handed crossing of the North Atlantic, achieved against all formidable odds. Former SAS sergeant Pete Bray’s solo unsupported voyage in a flimsy twenty-seven-foot kayak is one of the most courageous feats undertaken by man through one of the most inhospitable oceans in the world. For seventy-six days in 2001, the indomitable Cornishman paddled relentlessly across more than 2,000 miles of sea, enduring extremes of fatigue, equipment failure and foul weather before finally making landfall on the west coast of Ireland a few days before 9/11.Written in an approachable and matter-of-fact style, this is an incredible true adventure story.

Good Book By sig1ms I must admit I hoped this book would have focused a bit more on the crossing, but It still gets 5 stars for sure just for the pure novelty, and craziness of the journey. Support this guy, he deserves it. I think it is great motivational for long distance sailors like myself. I figure if he could make his journey in a Kayak, well how bad can I do with an 10,000 lbs and 30 feet:)

Extending from the southern Appalachians through the rolling hills of Kentucky and Tennessee to the Ozarks of Arkansas and Missouri, the upland South emerged in American lore as the setting where Daniel Boone, David Crockett, and other rugged frontiersmen forged a modern nation and headed west to become the progenitors of what some viewed as a new and superior “American race.” Others, however, saw this region as the breeding ground of poor, debased whites—the “hillbillies” and “white trash” of popular stereotypes. These conflicting identities have long dominated public discourse about the region, as well as fostered a deep fascination with it.            In this compelling study, part political and part cultural history, Ian C. Hartman probes the late-nineteenth-century context from which this paradox arose and the array of personalities, expressions, and policies that sought to resolve it—or at least make sense of it—in the decades that followed. He begins by investigating the writings of “race theorists” including future president Theodore Roosevelt, whose multivolume The Winning of the West (1889–96) furthered the tale of a heroic and distinctly American stock who, “with axe and rifle,” conquered a continent. Hartman relates these myths to the rise of the early-twentieth-century eugenics movement, which sought to regenerate and purify a once proud but now impoverished and degraded people through policies that included forced sterilization to weed out “imbeciles.” Hartman goes on to showcase the surprising ways in which the contradictory identity of the upland South affected broader national debates about imperialism, crime and punishment, poverty and inequality, and the growth and decline of the postwar welfare state.            Whether considering the racial implications of a 1930s Appalachian folk festival, the stereotypical but often sympathetic portrayals of rural southerners in sitcoms like The Beverly Hillbillies and The Andy Griffith Show, or the shifting perceptions of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty, In the Shadow of Boone and Crockett is a consistently provocative book that invites readers to ponder a fresh a set of ideas about America’s “race history” that have shown remarkable traction for more than a century.

In the Shadow of Boone and Crockett: Race, Culture, and the Politics of Representation in the Upland South, by Ian C. Hartman

Review “Well-researched and well argued, provocative and imaginative, In the Shadow of Boone and Crockett examines the image of the “pure” Appalachian Anglo-Saxons who furnished hope for the future, and the less flattering image of the degenerate, poverty-stricken mountaineers with blood on their hands. In a wide-ranging exploration that reaches from Teddy Roosevelt to JFK, Ian C. Hartman examines the idea of Appalachian exceptionalism over time and what that has meant for the region and for America.”—James C. Klotter, state historian of Kentucky and professor of history, Georgetown College

About the Author Ian C. Hartman is an assistant professor of history at the University of Alaska Anchorage. His articles and reviews have appeared in the Journal of Southern History, Cultural Studies—Critical Methodologies, Appalachian Journal, and Multicultural America: A Multimedia Encyclopedia, among other publications.

This monograph will illuminate some of the more important activities-with attendant problems, shortcomings, and achievements-of the U S. Army Field Artillery in Vietnam. The wide variations in terrain, supported forces, density of cannon, friendly population, and enemy activity which prevailed throughout South Vietnam tend to make every action and every locale singular. The United States Army met an unusually complex challenge in Southeast Asia. In conjunction with the other services, the Army fought in support of a national policy of assisting an emerging nation to develop governmental processes of its own choosing, free of outside coercion. In addition to the usual problems of waging armed conflict, the assignment in Southeast Asia required superimposing the immensely sophisticated tasks of a modern army upon an underdeveloped environment and adapting them to demands covering a wide spectrum. These involved helping to fulfill the basic needs of an agrarian population, dealing with the frustrations of antiguerrilla operations, and conducting conventional campaigns against well-trained and determined regular units. It is still necessary for the Army to continue to prepare for other challenges that may lie ahead. While cognizant that history never repeats itself exactly and that no army ever profited from trying to meet a new challenge in terms of the old one, the Army nevertheless stands to benefit immensely from a study of its experience, its shortcomings no less than its achievements.

In the 1920s, the Mexican composer Julián Carrillo (1875-1965) developed a microtonal system called El Sonido 13 (The 13th Sound). Although his pioneering role as one of the first proponents of microtonality within the Western art music tradition elevated Carrillo to iconic status among European avant-garde circles in the 1960s and 1970s, his music and legacy have remained largely overlooked by music scholars, critics, and performers. Confronting this paucity of scholarship on Carrillo and his music, Alejandro L. Madrid goes above and beyond "filling in" the historical record. Combining archival and ethnographic research with musical analysis and cultural theory, Madrid argues that Carrillo and Sonido 13 are best understood as a cultural complex: a network of moments, spaces, and articulations in which Carrillo and his music continuously re-acquire significance and meaning. Thus, Madrid explores Carrillo's music and ideas not only in relation to the historical moments of their inception, but also in relation to the various cultural projects that kept them alive and re-signified them through the beginning of the twenty-first century. Eschewing traditionally linear historical frameworks, In Search of Julián Carrillo and Sonido 13 employs an innovative transhistorical narrative in which past, present, and future are explored dialogically in order to understand the politics of performance and self-representation behind Carrillo and Sonido 13.In Search of Julián Carrillo and Sonido 13 transforms the traditional genre of the composer study, treating it not as a celebration of "masters" and "masterworks," but as a pointed postcolonial intervention that offers invaluable insight into the politics of cultural exchange, experimentalism, marginality, and cultural capital in twentieth century Mexico.
