Today’s prophecy students continue to benefit from the insightful and biblical writings of 19th-century theologian George H. Pember. Though “Earth’s Earliest Ages and their Connection with Modern Spiritualism and Theosophy” is Pember’s most well-known work, this work, “The Great Prophecies Concerning the Gentiles, the Jews, and the Church of God,” is just as edifying. Pember wrote of the purpose of his book when stated, “…for we do not propose to speak, in the present volume, of the Last Week, the Millennial Age, and the Final Judgment. We have considered the great Gentile and Jewish prophecies in order that we might better understand the times of the Church, and we have traced the career of the latter, until we left her in heaven with her Lord.” Pember begins with a study of the sign of the times, the seven dispensations, three lines of prophecy, and the three prophetic periods. He then turns his attention towards exegeting the relevant Old and New Testament passages to show how God revealed the rise and fall of nations through prophecy. In the second half of the book, he turns his attention towards the teachings and parables of Christ in the gospels concerning the end times. The book concludes with an in-depth study of the seven churches in Revelation and the rapture. God’s love and everlasting covenant is a thread that runs throughout the book. Decades before Israel became a nation, Pember spoke with confidence about the restoration of the Jews to the land promised them by God. While authors of more recent books have the benefit of hindsight, a study of Pember’s work reminds the reader that God has made clear his plan in scripture. More so, the reader will be encouraged to to recognize that He is faithful and sure to carry out His will in every age and circumstance.

The Great Prophecies Concerning the Gentiles, the Jews, and the Church of God, by G H Pember

Review "A distinct and conspicuous mark on the exhaustless theme of Scripture Prophecy... interpretation marked by great comprehensiveness and self-consistency." -- United Presbyterian Magazine"One of the most valuable expositions of prophecy ever published." -- Prophetic News

From the Publisher George Hawkins Pember was a comtemparary of Robert Govett, G. H. Lang, and D.M. Panton, and shared many of the same unique hermeneutic principles which categorized them into a 'set' by themselves. They were vastly ahead of their time and produced teachings which perplexed many and blessed others. It is the latter group that feels deeply indebted to Mr. Pember and his colleagues for heavenly instruction.

The value of his insights, and their applicability to succeeding generations is evident through the work for which Pember is best known, EARTH'S EARLIEST AGES (Kregel Pub. Co.). Originally published in 1876, it remains in print and has survived three previous publishers.

The Gentiles, The Jews, and The Church of God (Vol. 1), the first of his prophetic series was later expanded into three additional volumes. These include, The Great prophecies of the Centuries concerning Israel and the Gentiles (Vol. 2); The Church, The Churches, and The Mysteries (Vol. 3), and; The Great Prophecies of the Centuries Concerning The Church (Vol. 4).

About the Author Pember matriculated at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, in 1856; took the B.A. in 1860, being placed in the Second Class Classical Tripos; and his M.A. in 1863. He died July 5th, 1910, at the age of seventy-three. Though he studied the classics in his unconverted days for his own glory, after his conversion he sought to use the knowledge he had gained for the good of God's Church.

His scholarly approach to biblical prophecy is in a class all by itself. The only other book that even comes close is "Revelations Verse by Verse" by William Newell. Pember's book emphasizes that Revelations should not be a mystery, but a true revelation of what is to come and documents the background from the Old testament that make things clear and concise.

Excerpt from Through Santo Domingo and Haiti: A Cruise With the MarinesAt the Annual Meeting of the Committee on Co-operation in Latin America, January 13, 1919, the Executive Secretary was authorized to make a survey of religious, social and educational conditions in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The report presented herewith is a brief digest of the information gathered on this trip, presented partly in the form of a brief account of the trip itself, together with recommendations for the development of an educational, social and spiritual program that will be a real help to these two needy countries.Much material gleaned from the few available recent authoritative sources on Haiti and Santo Domingo, of which Schoenrich's "Santo Domingo, A Country with a Future," is easily first, is included in the following chapters. Some of the best of this quoted matter is now out of print. The writer can scarcely assume authority or claim credit for all of this information, though careful effort has been made to insure its reasonable accuracy. There is need for a real handbook on the Island, and it is the meeting, in part at least, of this demand, rather than the production of a work that should conform to all the canons of literary usage that has been the raison d'être of this booklet. For other defects, no further apology is offered than the necessary haste of preparation.A visit to Santo Domingo and Haiti probably carries with it more surprises for the average American than a trip to any other neighboring countries. After only five days on a slow boat from New York one finds himself in the midst of conditions which continually remind him, on one hand, of the heart of Africa, and on the other of the neglect and arrested development arising from Spain's abuse of the oldest of her American colonies. The problem that the United States is facing in practically taking over the island is an enormous one. Its seriousness is probably recognized by very few indeed.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. “After saying our good-byes to friends and neighbors, we all got in the cars and headed up the hill and down the road toward a future in Ohio that we hoped would be brighter,” Otis Trotter writes in Keeping Heart: A Memoir of Family Struggle, Race, and Medicine. Organized around the life histories, medical struggles, and recollections of Trotter and his thirteen siblings, the story begins in 1914 with his parents. By tracing the family’s movement northward after the unexpected death of his father, this engaging chronicle illuminates the journeys not only of a black man born with heart disease in the southern Appalachian coalfields, but of his family and community. This testament to the importance of ordinary lives fills a gap in the literature on an underexamined aspect of American experience: the lives of African Americans in rural Appalachia and in the nonurban endpoints of the Great Migration.

Keeping Heart: A Memoir of Family Struggle, Race, and Medicine (Race, Ethnicity and Gender in Appalachia), by Otis Trotter, Joe William Trotter Jr.

Review “Trotter’s story is the American Dream: in America, one can overcome the obstacles in one’s life through hard work and self-reliance. It will appeal to anyone who is interested in Appalachian studies, African American studies, and especially racial and ethnic diversity in the region.”—Andrew Baskin, chairperson and associate professor of African American studies at Berea College“The saga of Otis Trotter and his siblings is an inspiration for anyone with an ounce of empathy. Raised by a widowed mother, they were forced to overcome the debilitating legacy of racial, economic, and political oppression to achieve meaningful, prosperous lives. In many ways their history could serve as a metaphor for African American history. The ‘Trotter Fourteen’ seized control of their destinies through initiative, intelligence, dogged persistence, and by taking care of one another. The Trotter family’s courageous struggle to succeed against improbable odds will uplift the spirit of everyone who reads this book.” —Ronald L. Lewis, Robbins Chair and Professor of History Emeritus, West Virginia University“In this engaging family story, Trotter’s memoir also offers insights into a relatively neglected cohort in black history: African Americans of the Deep South who moved northward during the Great Depression and settled in villages and small cities.” —William W. Giffin, Department of History, Indiana State University

It will keep you intrigued from the beginning learning where it all began with the author’s grandparents and parents, to the end when he and his brothers went back years later to reflect on the memories. The book takes you on an adventure of a family that struggled with tragedy, and a mother raising 14 children as a widow. It also shows how even with a difficult start in life (heart problem), the author overcame medical difficulties and became someone who gave back to society. The book while showing the difficult challenges of transiting from West Virginia to Ohio, will also bring you laughter at the things that can sometimes happen within their lives and medical situations. It is a story of hope that makes you feel that anything is possible with a positive attitude and a will to overcome.

So many memories brought back revolving around the political situation at the time. Also very enlightening look at the world from the view of a child of color growing up in turbulent times , a child with major health problems. A peek into the lives of black Americans in rural America and the Jim Crow south. An informative well written work that brought back many memories that the mind had forgotten but still remained in the heart.

On reading I became more involved than I have with any other account of WW1.We were used as shock troops. Send the Australians in was the rule of the day by the British Generals. This was the case until early 1918 , when the Australians were allowed their own leadership and corps control. Wow did it work. Did it help to bring about the armistice? I think without doubt.Add the tranisition from trench to open warfare with speed and daring ,supported by good intelligence ,adequate artillery and that new ship !. The Tank The Australians did their bit.Now 100 years have passed.I have enjoyed the pleasure and the pain of visiting northern France and Belgium.I have received the enormous heart felt THANKS from the French. They are forever indebted to the Australian military for the part Austalians played in the liberating of their towns and villages along with the contributions to the eventual armistice.

I have just recently learned about his life and involvement in WW1. Of course most Americans know very little about the Great War and it's continuing effect on world events to this day. It's too bad we don't have his type in today's leaderless world. He would be a giant in business, politics, academia, and much more. This is a must read book not just for WW1 interest but to realize what great men are made of.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Unedited realism from someone who was there. By jared Gritty, unedited, unfiltered real life day to day journal of a multi theatre combat vet. This book/journal is a snap-shot into the 2004 deployment of an Infantry Platoon Sergeant who retired from the 82nd Airborne Division, and later deployed with a North Carolina National Guard Unit in Operation Enduring Freedom. The book offers a real world glimpse of the behind the scenes day to day struggles with being a professional soldier who is thrust into life or death situations with part time, often less than committed amateurs and Iraqi National Guardsmen. If you are expecting a fantastic drama, with heart pounding, cliff hanging action, and legendary sniping with hundreds of kills, this isn't your title. If you want to know what life was really like on a day to day basis for a modern soldier, possibly what your friend or family member went through and didn't talk about when they returned home, this is your book. The format is traditional in the beginning of the book, but switches to a day to day journal entry format after the initial scene is set. It was fascinating for me to travel the highs and lows with the author as he went about his day to day activities and shared his private thoughts with you during his down time. The book is self published and has not been through proof reading or editing by anyone. There are some typos and misspellings here and there and some past and present tense issues, but if you take it in the context of the author being a career grunt, those finishing issues can be overlooked in my opinion.

The anguish endured by agunot (chained) Orthodox Jewish women trapped in unhappy or defunct marriages by husbands who refuse to give them a gett (divorce) reveals the power of religious law even when it conflicts with modern societies' moral and legal norms. These women may be civilly divorced but must petition rabbinic courts in their quest to obtain a gett. In these courts women are subject to financial demands, pressured to drop charges of domestic violence and pedophilia against their husbands and to concede custody and visitation rights to unfit fathers.

This book takes the reader inside the rabbinic courts, into civil divorce courts and legislatures that contend with this problem and into the lives of victimized women and children. Well-versed in Jewish divorce law, the authors have counseled thousands of agunot and challenged the Orthodox rabbinate's inaction in response to the injustices faced by these women.
