In the 1920s, the Mexican composer Julián Carrillo (1875-1965) developed a microtonal system called El Sonido 13 (The 13th Sound). Although his pioneering role as one of the first proponents of microtonality within the Western art music tradition elevated Carrillo to iconic status among European avant-garde circles in the 1960s and 1970s, his music and legacy have remained largely overlooked by music scholars, critics, and performers. Confronting this paucity of scholarship on Carrillo and his music, Alejandro L. Madrid goes above and beyond "filling in" the historical record. Combining archival and ethnographic research with musical analysis and cultural theory, Madrid argues that Carrillo and Sonido 13 are best understood as a cultural complex: a network of moments, spaces, and articulations in which Carrillo and his music continuously re-acquire significance and meaning. Thus, Madrid explores Carrillo's music and ideas not only in relation to the historical moments of their inception, but also in relation to the various cultural projects that kept them alive and re-signified them through the beginning of the twenty-first century. Eschewing traditionally linear historical frameworks, In Search of Julián Carrillo and Sonido 13 employs an innovative transhistorical narrative in which past, present, and future are explored dialogically in order to understand the politics of performance and self-representation behind Carrillo and Sonido 13.In Search of Julián Carrillo and Sonido 13 transforms the traditional genre of the composer study, treating it not as a celebration of "masters" and "masterworks," but as a pointed postcolonial intervention that offers invaluable insight into the politics of cultural exchange, experimentalism, marginality, and cultural capital in twentieth century Mexico.

Ashby is located in the hills of central Massachusetts, along the New Hampshire border. The town was incorporated in 1767, initially growing as an agricultural community before water-powered mills emerged along its streams. In 1840, the population began 50 years of decline as people sought more profitable work in larger cities and free land in the western United States. Perhaps due to this decline, the center of town is preserved much as it was in 1840, boasting all its original buildings still in place. Ashby saw a century of renewed growth starting in 1880, when Bostonians arrived during the summer to escape the heat and unhealthy city air. A number of businesses, including inns and tearooms, catered to these wealthy visitors. With the arrival of the automobile, residents gained access to jobs in the surrounding mill towns. It was during this time that the last of Ashbys many mills closed, the first public library was built, and one-room classrooms were combined to become a central town school. Today, one can still stand on the town common in front of the 1809 meetinghouse and look over an area that has undergone little change in the past 170 years.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Should be titled "50 Guns I Really Like" By Joshua Woolstehulme A very poorly written book overall. The title gives the impression of guns that changed the course of history yet only covers the last 200 years. In addition, the majority of the guns mentioned are American with a good number selected being designed and introduced within the last 20-25 years. Exactly how something that new has changed the course of world history your guess is as good as mine. I'll be honest, some of the guns are given their due credit like the Colt Single Action Army, Winchester rifles, the Colt M1911, and the AK-47 but why not mention the Dreyse Needle gun, the world's first bolt action rifle? Or the Lebel Rifle, the world's first gun using smokeless ammunition? The Borchardt C93, the world's first sucessful semi-auto pistol? Why not even the Brown Bess for that matter? The flintlock musket that dominated the 18th century and used the Britain to expand their global influence and used the American colonists to help win their independence? Overall, you can find better information online and I'm glad I didn't waste my money on this book.

Bearing this in mind By Gary Hansen Understand that this book covers only firearms of the cartridge period. The selections certainly reflect the authors' personal preferences. It is not an in depth technical treatise, but more a coffee table book with some excellent data. Bearing this in mind, it is a most enjoyable book. The information presented is accurate and interesting. The choices are certainly important designs, though you may consider others more "world changing". Photos are numerous and excellent. To top things off, the price is very reasonable,
