If you are interested in doing a genealogy and have family from this town, this is a wonderful resource. There are vignettes of the various founders of the town as well as a few pictures. They go family by family by last name so it is pretty easy to navigate. The copy is clean and easy to read. I appreciated that it was unedited.

JUBILEE SUMMER, JUNE 1887. Britain is deep in lavish celebration of Empire. That same month, in the East End of London a quiet young man, recently arrived from Warsaw, is accused of murdering an Angel. Two writers at the start of their career – Z, a brilliant Anglo-Jewish novelist and Maggie, a fiery social reformer – are brought together in a remarkable encounter as they investigate a crime that would change their lives and their vision of themselves, England and the world. THE STRANGE CASE OF ISRAEL LIPSKI is a brilliant study of London’s East End at the turn of the century and a fascinating exploration into a murder case that shook the very foundations of British justice.

Compelling case of murder in the slums of 1887 London By Larry C The Strange Case of Israel Lipski is both a "who done it" and a sociological study of London's Jewish immigrant population in the late 1880s. Biderman captures the mood of that time so well I had to double check to be sure this wasn't a re-issue of one hundred year old book. A young well-educated first generation Brit gets drawn into the murder trial. It is entirely possible that the police have arrested the wrong man. The murdered pregnant woman, the convicted man and other central characters are from the same ethnic subgroup but of different economic classes. Their reaction to the crime as influenced by their socioeconomic status is fascinating. The events are real. The case is compelling and the writing, although in the voice of a nineteenth century author, is brisk. It is a compelling read.

As a social history of London's immigration problems then, and of a perpetual crisis of identity, it works well. It's also a fictionalized look into the life of a writer interesting in his own right, who should be read more.

While reading it you will learn which bank in Calhoun County was robbed by Bonnie and Clyde, which town was built on the largest known meteorite crater in the United States and where you can go for all-you-can-eat biscuits & gravy. I was surprised to learn that a friend of mine from college is related to the family who opened Rost Motor Inc. in Manson in 1958. The days of getting a shave and a haircut for a quarter while wearing a soybean suit might be over, but this book will take you right back there through the hundreds of vintage photos. This county endured many hardships throughout the years due to fires & tornadoes, but it always bounced back by rebuilding. Upon finishing the book, I found myself craving the Chicken Fried Steak at Wagon Wheel in Lake City.

After growing up in Calhoun County and seeing many of the places referred to in this book it was a pleasure to revisit the memories it brought back. Darcy has done a tremendous job for us "ex-pats" in compiling the pictures, anecdotes and history that have faded back into forgotten memories. A very limited readership for the material, but greatly appreciated by those readers who are no longer able to visit. Thank You.

Even Mississippi textbooks rarely mention the part Mississippi men and women played in World War I. Mississippians in the Great War presents in their own words the story of Mississippians and their roles. This body of work divides into five sections, each associated with crucial dates of American action. Comments relating to various military actions are interspersed throughout to give the reader a context of the wide variety of experiences. Additionally, where possible, Anne L. Webster provides information on the soldier or sailor to show what became of him after his service.

Webster examined newspapers from all corners of the state for “letters home,” most appearing in newspapers from Natchez, Greenville, and Pontotoc. The authors of the letters gathered here are from soldiers, aviators, sailors, and relief workers engaged in the service of their country. Letter writing skills varied from citizens of minimal literacy to those who would later become published authors and journalists.

These letters reflect the experiences of green, young Mississippians as they endured training camp, voyaged across the Atlantic to France, and participated in horrific battles leaving some scarred for life. To round out the picture, Webster includes correspondence from nurses and YMCA workers who describe drills, uniforms, parades, and celebrations.

Good selection of World War I letters home from representative Americans By JAMES LONG This book is high priced, but it has a very interesting selection of letters home from World War I. The letters are from Mississippians, but seem very representative of Americans of that era, and the book would be appreciated by all readers. The letters cover initial reactions to military service, training, Atlantic transport with the fear of submarines, very friendly greeting from British and French civilians, and some very good battle descriptions. The author has been able to identify most of these obscure individuals, and provides a few details of their postwar lives. A very worthwhile book that will be appreciated by World War I experts and newcomers to the subject.

Hopeless Wars is the story about the struggles of Aliyah among Jews in the Soviet Union during the twentieth century. Yasha (Kedmi's) Kazkov's personal stories and challenges are fascinating. Kedmi fought for the truth and succeeded in producing critical change –first as activist for Aliyah in his native Russia and then in Israel in his important role within the Nativ organization. Kedmi served in official and non-official positions, helping thousands take part in creating a Jewish country. In his book, new details are exposed with regards to the decision making process within the government and among politicians like Vladimir Putin, Menachem Begin, Ehud Barak, Shimon Peres, Binyamin Netanyahu and others, as well as facts about the Secret Service, Iranian’s nuclear capabilities and the relationship between Israel and Russia. This fascinating book will allow the readers to peek into the soul of the "free warrior" – a Jew who materialized his dream to make Aliyah to the Holy Land – and then return to his “battlefield” as head of a network the likes of which don’t exist anywhere in the world –fulfilling his missions with extraordinary expertise. It is impossible to read his work and remain unaffected.
