By zhaolewisliu As a journalist and filmmaker from mainland China, I've never read a book better written about the ever-changing Chinese social media sphere.China's millennials, also known as the post 80's and post 90's, have gone through a drastic social change within a decade that's almost equivalent to that of the United States since the 1960's. Luckily, social media has documented and participated in that intense change in China, and Miss carter recounted through plenty of events and incidents how the internet had become the incubator for young Chinese to discuss domestic issues such as homosexuality, feminism, freedom and everything that used to be "too sensitive" to talk about in mainstream media, as well as international pop culture icons such as Taylor Swift, and Benedict Cumberbatch among others.Miss Carter's writing is elegant, humorous and informative: she explains the complicated Chinese language and the even more coded Chinese internet culture, counter-culture and subcultures in a way that every English speaker would easily understand. From tiny keyboards in smoky internet cafes to the tragical scenes of Wenzhou's bullet train wreck, reading the book feels like flying on an invisible drone through geographical, political, economical, social and cultural landscapes of China.The only bummer of the book is that it's written before the upheaval of Wechat in the Chinese social media scene. It's also not very politically correct that the book cover is a postmodernist parody of the beloved Chairman Mao's socialist policy "Let 100 Flowers Blossom", which would make it hard for enthusiastic communist party members to read in public.However, just like the Chinese social media users she studied who creatively bypassed the government's monitor, Carter didn't shy away from taboo topics such as human rights, censorship and freedom of speech. Through ample research, field studies and online dialogues, Carter offered more than 100 different voices of, from and about contemporary China, which outstands herself far above the "haha China" crowd.

A "Must Read" To Understand China Today By David Schlesinger Liz Carter has written an important, fun and illuminating book that sheds light on China's internet, censorship, government and society all at once. Her understanding is deep; her writing is clear and bright; and her insights are vitally important to anyone who wants to understand more about China today. With twice as many people online as the United States has in total, China is a connected nation. Liz Carter's book helps everyone understand what's happening in that febrile digital world. Strongly recommended.

French and Allied troops are at the gates of Paris. It is the sacred duty of all Parisians to do battle! The hour of national resurrection has sounded.” – poster displayed in Paris in August 1944 One of the most famous people in the world came to tour the city of Paris for the first time on June 28, 1940. Over the next three hours, he rode through the city’s streets, stopping to tour L’Opéra Paris. He rode down the Champs-Élysées toward the Trocadero and the Eiffel Tower, where he had his picture taken. After passing through the Arc de Triomphe, he toured the Pantheon and old medieval churches, though he did not manage to see the Louvre or the Palace of Justice. Heading back to the airport, he told his staff, “It was the dream of my life to be permitted to see Paris. I cannot say how happy I am to have that dream fulfilled today.” Four years after his tour, Adolf Hitler would order the city’s garrison commander, General Dietrich von Choltitz, to destroy Paris, warning his subordinate that the city "must not fall into the enemy's hand except lying in complete debris." Of course, Paris was not destroyed before the Allies liberated it, but it would take more than 4 years for them to wrest control of France from Nazi Germany after they took the country by storm in about a month in 1940. By the end of D-Day, June 6, 1944, the Allies had managed to successfully land 170,000 men, with over 75,000 on the British and Canadian beaches, 57,000 on the American beaches, and over 24,000 airborne troops. Thanks to Allied deception, the German army had failed to react to prevent the Allies from making the most of their landings. Just one division, the Hitlerjugend, would arrive the following day. Despite a fearsome and bloody day, the majority of the Allied forces had held their nerve, and most importantly, achieved their objectives. This ensured Operation Overlord was ultimately successful, and victory in Europe would be achieved within less than a year. Given how the rest of the war played out, it’s often forgotten that the British and Americans, after breaking out from their D-Day beachhead on the continent, did not free Paris from its Third Reich garrison. Instead, it was the people of Paris themselves, encouraged by the Allied armies putting the Germans to rout nearby, who retook the city, led by figures from the French Resistance. The revolt that emerged involved many factions, chiefly the followers of Charles de Gaulle, or the “Gaullists,” and the communists of the PCF (Parti Communiste Francais, French Communist Party). These factions provided the spearhead and the catalyst sparking the people of Paris into rebellion against their Nazi masters, and the leadership coordinating that uprising and making it a success. Their rivalry and thirst for power spurred them on to outdo each other, but they all sought the same objective: defeat of the foreign occupiers. The Liberation, once it began, required just one week to complete. Parisians fired the first shots on August 19, even as the Allies remained wary of trying to liberate Paris due to its cultural significance, knowing full well that Hitler could order the city destroyed. Nevertheless, on August 24, 1944, the French 2nd Armored Division began liberating parts of Paris, with overjoyed crowds of Parisians welcoming them, while the other Allies entered the eastern part of the city. General von Choltitz decided not to bomb Paris during a retreat, instead surrendering the city intact on August 25. That same day, Charles de Gaulle made a speech at the Hotel de Ville celebrating the freeing of the city and calling for French armies to sweep into Germany and exact “revenge” on the Germans.

Tells the complete story about the liberation of Paris By Modupe Hendricks The book the Liberation of Paris: The History of the World War II Campaign that Freed the French Capital from Nazi Germany was quite interesting. The book was both concise and brief but it provided a lot of information. I had never read about the liberation of Paris before this. It is interesting to note that it was the Communists portion of the French Resistance that pushed for the revolt harder than any of the other French Resistance groups. It was also interesting to note that the German General von Choltitz did not appear to have his heart in crushing the rebellion. Of course it was understandable that the allies preferred to bypass Paris rather than risk destroying Paris by a direct assault. Collaborators and non-collaborators were punished by the French people during and after the revolt. The author seems to believe that women were particularly singled out to be punished so that they would remember their place in the society. Last note American racism reared its ugly head when a requirement was made that the French troops marching through Paris had to be white, nonwhite soldiers made up significant percentages of the colonial troops. The book has a good bibliography. I highly recommend this book.

In the course of the Second World War, more than a quarter of a million European and American soldiers were taken prisoner by the Japanese in Malaysia, the Dutch East Indies and the Pacific. They went on to suffer years of deprivation and brutality, most of them failing to survive at all. Harold Atcherley was fortunate enough to be one of the survivors. Throughout his time as a prisoner, from the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942 until 14 September 1945, he kept a diary, which he was able to bring home with him. This book is based on that diary, along with other diaries and official documents. He was fortunate enough to count among his friends and comrades the celebrated artist Ronald Searle, whose drawings have been used to illustrate his text; they give a far better impression of what life was like for a POW of the Japanese than mere words can, though neither words nor pictures could ever convey the appalling stench of disease and death on such a massive scale.

Prisoner of Japan: A Personal War Diary Singapore, Siam and Burma, 1941 - 1945, by Sir Harold Atcherley

About the Author Born in 1918, Harold Atcherley served in the army throughout the war. He had the misfortune to land in Singapore with the 5th British Infantry Division in January 1942 and became a prisoner of the Japanese shortly afterwards when the surrender of the island to the Japanese. The War diary which he kept during his three and a half years in captivity records his experiences in Changi Prisoner of War Camp and hard labour on the construction of the Burma Thailand Railway. He returned home at the end of the war in 1945 and resumed his career with the Royal Dutch Shell Group the following year. He married Anita Leslie, with whom he had three children, and was posted to the Middle East in 1946. Some four years later he went to South America. He returned to work in England in 1960 and retired from the oil industry in 1970. For the next thirty years he served in a voluntary capacity as chairman of a number of government advisory groups, in recognition of which he was awarded a knighthood in 1977. He was also chairman of several charitable organisations including Toynbee Hall and the Aldborough Foundation. For the last 23 years he has lived in Suffolk with wife Sarah, finally retiring at the age of 80.

Vieille Prisoner of Japan is in the same time an exceptional history book, a thriller and the personal story of an amazing gentleman in dreadful times. You cannot leave that book when you have opened it. Every body or nearly every body read the Bridge on the river Kwai. This book has the same strength and the same inspiration. A must read

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sobering and Enlightening By Colleen Fleming In school, I'd never learned much about WWII aside from the German end of things. This book was my introduction to what was happening in other parts of the world at the time -- which in some places was equally horrifying. While there's a lot of supplementary material and summaries the author includes to give the reader better context, most of the text is a transcription of his own notes made while experiencing this stuff; watching the way his thoughts change over time is both fascinating and a bit of a wake-up call. I remember putting the book down to look around my house, and making note of all the things I have (air conditioning, a toilet that's mine and that works, eggs and meat and vegetables in the fridge, vitamin supplements, all kinds of handy medicine) that these people didn't, and suddenly realizing that hey, I've got it pretty awesome.Very glad this book exists. It's both a challenge to readers' worldviews and a wealth of information for anyone researching this subject.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. My first cowboy. By D. David In 1946 (at four years of age) I met my first cowboy. He rode his horse when inspecting his seven farms. The farms were spred up to 100 miles apart. He had a Winchester rifle; a six-shooter, chaps-the complete outfit. Unlike the cowboy in this great story, he did not like people. He appeared to my four-year-old eyes to be from another time and place. He warned my father to keep his hogs off his place or he would shoot them! His ten kids worked many of the farms in their bare feet - pulling weeds through eighteen-hour days. He wasn't' afraid to use a Bullwhip on anything. His gruff voice delivered his authority. I decided to read this intertaining book because my grandfather only read cowboy novels through an alcoholic haze. He longed for those days of yesteryear. I hope he made it across that great river.

It did open my eyes to how the railroads were operated giving the cowmen and sheepmen short shrift and always keeping the crooked eye on the profit margin and making a profit no matter what!
