An incredible epic journey from Italy to China revealing ancient trade routes while being educated about history. Nick Rowan recounts his days of discovery and frustrations. With most of the post USSR central Asian countries rarely reported in today's media this book was a welcome read page by page!

Great story, presentation needs work By Evil Voodoo Celt A fascinating and engaging story of a journey through the countries that lie along the ancient Silk Road. The author is an engaging character- he doesn't take himself too seriously, but he isn't overly self-deprecating, either. And he went into this adventure with a determination to *have* an adventure, to be challenged and to allow himself to change. It also helped a lot that he really seems to like people, to think the best of them, and to want to communicate with them. I found myself wishing that he'd left out the (far too) usual disparaging remarks about "tourists" and the like, but there weren't too many and they were confined to the beginning and end of the story.Apart from that last, there is one major problem: he needs a professional editor. According to his acknowledgments, he had a relative edit it, but (no offense intended) I couldn't tell... maybe she just checked spelling and punctuation? The author's syntax and grammar are often garbled, his world choices have a tendency to be odd or simply wrong, and he could both cut down on his adverb use and make sure his modifiers in general are modifying the right thing.I read the Kindle edition, and the conversion needs some work as well- the map images didn't go with their headers, the photos section was completely jumbled, and the table of contents and suggested reading sections weren't formatted properly. I know that for under $5 US there's a certain amount of "you get what you pay for", but these are elementary problems that a single pass through would catch.

He uniquely dovetailed vibrant descriptions of people, places and the day in day out exciting and most likely mundane travel from one locale to another. Mr. Rowan was able to include history and current events in the story. A delightful book sure to raise the pulses of any who love Central Asia, the Stans, history or real life journeys of adventure. I do wish he could have ventured into Afghanistan. His keen ability as an observer would have been wonderful. I hope he is still traveling and writing.

Introducing the Chechnens By Illiniguy71 The Chechens, a small ethnic group in the Caucasus Mountains, have been fighting the Russians for much of the last 200 years. They are moderate Sufi Muslims, although in recent decades, a few Chechens have converted to radical and extreme Wahhabi Islam. The Chechens suffered greatly from Russian military campaigns against their civilians in Czarist times and again during World War II when Stalin expelled them from their homeland to the plains of Soviet Central Asia. Only after 1956 were they allowed to return. They have fought two wars with the Putin's Russia in recent decades: 1994-96 and 1999-2009. It was the Russian people's fear of Chechen terrorist bombings that allowed Putin to rise to power in Russia. The author provides considerable evidence that the bombings were actually done by political manipulators within Russia and not by the Chechens. The author makes a convincing case that claims by the Western press and some governments that the Chechens fought with Al Quaeda in Afghanistan are false. But it is true that Chechen volunteers are active in the war against Assad in Syria. The author likewise provides evidence that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was radicalized not on a return trip to the Caucasus but in the United States by viewing extremist Islamic web sites while living in Massachusetts. A most informative, extensively researched and valuable book.

A Non-Fiction Thriller on a Topic that is still relevant today from a well-traveled, well-educated and exciting college teacher By Amazon Customer Williams is a first-rate scholar and writer. I would almost call his book a 'must-read' since it provides a great deal of relevant information and a coherent appraisal of important issues: How did Imperial Russia's expansion in the Caucasus region mirror American expansion in the 19th century? How did Stalin's deportation of the Chechens during WW II impact the people? Why were the Chechens unable to achieve independence when Latvia, Ukraine, Armenia and others former Soviet republics did in the 1990s? What lessons can be learned from the Russian tactics to subdue the Chechens in two wars? Who was really responsible for terror acts that prompted the second war? What can be learned about the many groups within Islam that shaped the conflicts? Have Chechen fighters joined the conflict in Afghanistan? What were the factors that led the Tsarnaev brothers to plan the Boston Marathon attack? Williams shows his 'historian's stripes' with careful research and reasonable conclusions. There is much about this book that leads me to give it Five Stars. Ken Poppe

Compelling reading on this timely topic By Prof. Shopper It is rare that a professional historian has the occasional to bring an academic's depth of understanding to an account of such obvious contemporary interest as how two immigrant brothers would somehow see terrorism as an expression of their Chechen identity. Rarer still is when the result is such a clear, readable and compelling tale. As I finished each chapter in the long and anguished history of the Chechen people and their tragic interactions with czarist Russia, the Soviet Union, and the Russian Federation, I had to force myself to put the book down rather than read on to see what happens next. Not being a historian, let alone an expert in this field, I can't directly judge whether Williams has successfully found truth in a story told very differently, and with liberally use of propaganda by various factions. However, the text is painstakingly footnoted and every claim is backed with authoritative primary source references.

"Analyzing case studies including the Black Death, Spanish Flu, cholera, leprosy, syphilis, cancer, and Ebola, this book systematically maps the development of trends and the latest research on disease into a concise and enlightening timeline." Naturally anything with such a broad scope is not going to contain an exhaustive amount of information covering every faucet of every disease. It does have a nice balance of history and diseases, including how society has handled them over the decades - and spread them.Contents include: Introduction: Definitions, Origins; Chapter One: Prehistory; Chapter Two: Antiquity; Chapter Three: The Dark and Middle Ages; Chapter Four: The New World; Chapter Five: Early Modern to 1900; Chapter Six: The Twentieth Century; Chapter Seven: New Diseases; Notes, Glossary of Diseases, Bibliography, and Index.I'll freely admit that I have a fondness for books on diseases and outbreaks of various epidemics or pandemics, so this accessible survey of diseases is right up my alley. I thought Martin did an excellent job presenting the history of diseases in a way that doesn't seem too daunting or overwhelming while including a wealth of pertinent information. As is also my wont, I was thrilled to see that A Short History of Disease includes notes, a bibliography, and index. Fascinating picture of New Zealand and Pacific interactions over 40 years and more By John Faisandier I have just read the hard copy version of this book. It is a delightful read and very informative about the relationship between New Zealand and the Pacific Islands and Asia. Anthony Haas was there and involved from the 1960s and helped inform and formulate government policy through many decades. This is a quirky book in the best sense of the word. It covers personal history from Anthony's own German Jewish heritage and how that has influenced his involvement in promoting citizen education in New Zealand and the Pacific.The people and personalities Anthony has met along the way are a veritable Whos Who of New Zealand and Pacific political life over the past 40 years. As well as being interesting reading Anthony Haas has provided valuable references to resources that future researchers can consult and a variety of topics. I highly recommend this book!

Tony Haas is a New Zealand writer, researcher and consultant with German and English ancestry who has devoted much of his adult life to his love affair with the people of the Pacific and to increasing New Zealanders’ understanding of Pasifika migrants to New Zealand and the ties they maintain with family and culture in their Pacific homelands. His book is testimony to the rapidly growing cultural diversity of New Zealand, since the 1800s home to a growing population of colonists from the British Isles as well as the original Maori who had arrived several centuries earlier, themselves from the islands of the Pacific. With successive waves of migration since the Second World War, New Zealand is rapidly evolving into a society of many different Asian, Pacific and European people as well as Maori and those of British descent. Haas’s book is founded on an ideal of New Zealand citizenship that embraces this flourishing multicultural identity, where there is no contradiction in being both a good New Zealand citizen and keeping alive Tongan, Samoan or Fijian family ties and traditions as well. He has particularly strong ties of affection with Tonga: he and his wife Tricia made an open adoption of a Tongan daughter and are now the grandparents of three proudly Tongan New Zealanders.But Being Palangi is also the intensely personal and absorbing account of how Haas reached back into his own history to understand his place here: son of a Jewish refugee from the tyranny of Nazi Germany. Haas’s father was a well-educated and cultured man who found his way to New Zealand and settled into the life of a sheep-farmer in New Zealand’s rural North Island. He in turn was the son of a Jewish German patriot and war veteran who was the last President of the German Democratic Party in the dying days of the Weimar Republic.Being Palangi has many optimistic lessons, not only for New Zealanders but for anybody living in a diverse society of migrants, of how to embrace one’s own history and culture and at the same time to understand and appreciate the contribution that other cultures make to any society. The utter mismanagement of it is well detailed, and the horror of the men being slaughtered on both sides is well detailed. I have lived in this area most of my life and never heard the history of the parish. I had never seen any of the photographs in this book and am sure they would have remained out of public view had it not been for this book. The book is well written and interesting. High quality photographs include scenes of everyday life such as farming and town life to the extraordinary including an exploded courthouse and the singing governor. Great job!!!

This is a compendium of oral legends and tales passed down by the Blackfeet. Stories vary, but the name “Blackfeet” or “Blackfoot,” applied to them by others, may have come originally from their practice of dying their moccasin soles black. That said, their use of an Algonquian language group may indicate that they were relatively recent newcomers to the region from somewhere in the Northeast. The territory of the Blackfeet, at its greatest extent, encompassed a vast area from the eastern Rocky Mountains of Alberta and Montana and extending several hundred miles out onto the Great Plains, around the upper reaches of the Saskatchewan River and its tributaries in Alberta and the upper reaches of the Missouri River and its tributaries in Montana. The area of the land most sacred to the Blackfeet is the Sweet Grass Hills, which are located just south of the Canadian border in the central part of Montana. These are a group of buttes forested with balsam firs rising several thousand feet above the surrounding plains and which can be seen for a considerable distance. This was also Napi’s favorite resting place in the mythology of the Blackfeet. Young Blackfeet went up into the Hills on their vision quests and, as their predecessors had done for several thousands of years, left inscriptions and petroglyphs on the surface of the tall sandstone cliffs. Many of the stories told by the Blackfeet take place there.
