Historian Michael Enright provides a close-up account of Australian servicemen on the Western Front during WWI. Using many previously unpublished, first-hand materials, the author provides a fresh look at the Great War through the eyes of ordinary servicemen. The scene is set with a brief account of events at Gallipoli, the place where the Australians gained their reputation as fierce fighters, and then the author discusses the reformation of the ANZAC divisions in Egypt and their subsequent movement to France. This leads to previously unpublished personal accounts that give new interpretations of the key battles on the Western Front at Fromelles, Somme, Bullecourt, Messines, Passchendaele, and Villers-Bretonneux, amongst others. Many of these accounts support the particular bravery of the Australian soldier. This work provides a reassessment of the ANZAC legend and mythology based on the personal diaries and memoirs of those who were there.

Lynn ON THE WESTERN FRONT: EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS FROM AUSTRALIANS IN THE GREAT WARMICHAEL ENRIGHTSCHIFFER PUBLISHING, 2015HARDCOVER, $29.99, 192 PAGES, PHOTOGRAPHS, MAPS, ENDNOTES, BIBLIOGRAPHY, INDEXAustralia entered the war behind Britain on an equal upsurge of patriotism. Although Australian troops had participated in earlier colonial wars-notably the Boer War-the First World War was the first real opportunity to prove their loyalty: "To be allowed to share in the perils and glories of the battlefield as part of a British Army, was regarded at once as a distinction of which Australia might be proud, and as a guarantee of their future position as British subjects," so wrote W. Richards in his Her Majesty's Indian and Colonial Forces: A Descriptive Account. This attitude was hardly surprising, given that the population of Australians who were of European descent was an estimated 96% British with the rest being of Irish descent and other European minorities. The qualities of the Australian soldier in the war were unique, and in contemporary opinions resulted from the independent spirit of those who colonized the frontiers of civilization, the "men from the bush," even though many recruits were either recently arrived immigrants from Great Britain or from the urban centers. This unique and independent spirit of the ANZAC or Australian and New Zealand Army Corps represented reckless heroism, enterprise, resourcefulness, fidelity, and "mateship", the latter perhaps the most significant: the belief that no matter what happened, one's mates should never be let down. This independent and self-reliant attitude infuriated the more traditional members of the British military establishment.ON THE WESTERN FRONT: EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS FROM AUSTRALIANS IN THE GREAT WAR is an important subject with the ongoing 100th Anniversary of World War I. Author Michael Enright supplies full and useful detail on the contributions of the ordinary Australian servicemen through the skillful use of previously unpublished diaries, photographs, and memoirs of the men who participated in such important battles on the Western Front: Fromelles, Somme, Bullecourt, Messines, Passchendele, and Villers-Bretonneux to name just a few. At the outbreak of the war, the Commonwealth of Australia was only 13 years old, with a population of just 7 million. Yet no less then 38% of the white male population of military age volunteered, and of the nearly 322,000 men who served overseas, some 65% became casualties. This inspiring account shows the sacrifice that forged Australia's national consciousness, and reputation earned by the "Diggers" that persists to this day. Both reader and military historian won't be disappointed in having this book in their personal library.Lt. Colonel Robert A. Lynn, Florida GuardOrlando, Florida
