About the Author

Terence Brown is professor emeritus of english at Trinity College, Dublin. Elected a member of the Irish Academy in 1992, he was also appointed Director of Irish Book Awards in 1987. He has been visiting professor at The Sorbonne, The University of New South Wales and is a member of the International Association of Anglo Irish Literature. He is a senior fellow of TCD.

Among his publications are a biography of George Moore, Dissolute Characters, Ireland: A Social and Cultural History 1922-2002, The Life of W.B.Yeats, Louis MacNeice: Sceptical Vision and An Ulster Renaissance: Poets from the North of Ireland.

I am so glad Hans Wagner has added his story to the mix By Frank Scozzari This is a heart-wrenching true-to-life account of struggle and perseverance during the Nazi atrocities of World War II. There are many accounts of the Holocaust out there. I am so glad Hans Wagner has added his story to the mix. The realism and emotion coming directly from a person who lived it and felt it, is starkly evident in his account. Truly, it is an amazing and unmatched account of what happened. This is a document of history, and should be archived and chronologized as such in the Library of Congress.

The contents of this book gives me chill on that horrific event and I could not put it down until the end of the story. This book gives hope and inspiration to everyone to accept things that we can’t control, but still continue to battle life. I highly recommend this book.

By Patrick D This book is a journey through period of death, injustice and the annihilation of an entire race, the Jewish race through the eyes of a German boy. In this book, we can feel the real tension of German people during holocaust and World War 2. Author gives very real description of Nazi concentration camps. As Nazi concentration camps were filled with ‘sub humans’, which is people who did not fit the mold of being a perfect German. Majority of these people were the Jews, although other nationalities, homosexuals and those with mental disability were also among-st those found in these camps. I have read such a heart-touching book recently!

The advance at the proper moment of the African infantry, and its wheel right and left upon the flanks of the disordered and crowded Roman legionaries, is far beyond praise. The whole battle, from the Carthaginian standpoint, is a consummate piece of art, having no superior, few equal, examples in the history of war.” – Theodore Dodge, military historian Although the Romans gained the upper hand over Carthage in the wake of the First Punic War, the legendary Carthaginian general Hannibal brought the Romans to their knees for over a decade during the Second Punic War. While military historians are still amazed that he was able to maintain his army in Italy near Rome for nearly 15 years, scholars are still puzzled over some of his decisions, including why he never attempted to march on Rome in the first place. Regardless, Hannibal was such a threat that the Romans responded in an unprecedented nature when the Carthaginians resumed the campaigning season in the spring of 216 BCE by capturing the city of Cannae, a crucial supply hub, and placing themselves along the line that convoys from the ports and warehouses of the south needed to travel to reach Rome. This was something the Romans could not and did not take lying down; Rome raised the largest army in their city’s history, a force of between 80,000 and 100,000 men, and marched south with Consuls Varro and Paullus at the head of the army. This military behemoth disregarded the delaying tactics that Maximus had favored, fully determined to destroy Hannibal once and for all as quickly as possible. Despite the massive horde headed his way, Hannibal was ready for them. He encamped his army near the Aufidus, a river not far from Cannae, and waited. His intelligence told him that Consul Varro, the more influential of the two Roman generals, was a firebrand, talented in attack but with a tendency to overreach himself, and Hannibal resolved to use this flaw to his advantage. Hannibal arrayed his army in the open, sure that Varro would be unable to resist the temptation to offer battle, and then deliberately placed his weakest infantry in the center of his battle-line. Varro led the Roman legions straight at the centre of Hannibal’s formation, proceeding in characteristic bull-headed fashion and spearheading the assault himself. Hannibal’s troops in the center yielded before the legions, as Hannibal had anticipated, sucking the bulk of the Roman force deep into the centre of Hannibal’s formation. Meanwhile, the wings of Hannibal’s infantry automatically swung against the flanks of the Roman force while Hannibal’s cavalry, led by his celebrated general Maharbal, crushed the Roman cavalry and light infantry deployed to protect the formation’s flanks and rear and, in so doing, succeeded in encircling it completely. The Roman force now found itself unable to run or maneuver, completely surrounded by Hannibal’s forces. It was one of the earliest examples of the pincer movement in the history of warfare. The result was a massacre, one of the most vicious battles in the history of the world. Around 75% of the Roman army was cut down in the ensuing melee, which would be in the vicinity of between 50,000-80,000 soldiers depending on which initial estimates are considered to be accurate. Among the casualties was the luckless Consul Paullus.

The region in far northeastern California encompassed by Lava Beds National Monument is often called the Land of Burnt Out Fires. The name reflects a landscape created by fiery volcanic forces, including cataclysmic events that created more than 700 lava tube caves and an aboveground landscape shaped and fractured by lava flows and other geologic turmoil. A lava beds introductory gem of a book By Daniel Woodhead III This book by my friend and longtime Klamath Falls newspaperman and historian, Lee Juillerat, is a wonderful introduction to Lava Beds National Monument south of Tule Lake at the California/Oregon border. It is a national park managed by the National Park Service and is filled with fascinating geological phenomena, as well as being the site of the 1873 Modoc Indian War which historians have described as one of the most significant Indian wars in American history.Lee's book on Lava Beds National Monument is easy reading and is well supplemented with an array of very interesting photographs of the lava beds. History buffs will particularly enjoy the chapter on the Modoc War which includes historic photographs by Eadweard Muybridge and sketches by William Simpson.If you are interested in, or planning a vacation to Lava Beds National Monument, Lee's book is an introductory must. Lived here for 14 plus years and learned a lot of Brunswick's history from neighbors and friends. This is pictures made what I had been told come to life. By Bryan Nowak There are three kinds of people who would read a book like this. The first are the people who truly believe in ghosts and like paranormal investigations. The second are people who really love history and love to learn more about a region such as the Petersburg area. The third are, like me, one who loves both of those topics and more.Plenty of ghostly haunts and details of investigations here. Pamela does a great job laying things out for you. I am not a huge fan of the 'Ghost Box', not because I doubt it can be used, but I don't see a realistic way to filter out all of the stay radio waves. But that is just one tool in her tool kit and she uses them all to great effect.The history lessons and anecdotal stories are awesome. This is, I am convinced, why the show Ghost Hunters, became so popular; details, details, details. I want to know who lived there, what they did, how they died, did they have a family, what happened to them? I want to know as much detail as I can, and Pamela does a great job dishing it out.Paranormal Petersburg also provides you the locations of the places with stunning accuracy. It's clear Pamela does this because she loves the area, and wants us to love it too. It's not enough to make me just want to read the ghost stories, but if you are writing a book like this you have to make me want to visit the locations. This book delivers just that.For the strange and unusual, there are a few great stories about some, what I would call, urban legends and myths. The Goat-man and Sasquatch show up. Who knows what people are seeing. Are they real, or just the product of too much whiskey? But it makes for the stuff of local legends. I didn't know there were instances of the Goat-man and Sasquatch in that area, so I learned a little of the local-lore.In total, Paranormal Petersburg is a great read. It's well worth it if you are interested in the world of the paranormal or the history of the local area. I know that I added a bunch of locations to get into my car and drive to!

Pamela starts out with the different equipment that is used on the investigations. Then we hop into the different locations with beautiful color photos, events that have happened in the past, and different occurrences in the present. There is also some folk lore added in to make the book even better.I really like ghost hunters/investigations and I jumped at the opportunity to review this book. There are 58 color images of the different locations, great history of everyone, and the paranormal that can be associated with them. That in itself was a great part of this book. Just the history of many locations was a learning lesson. You can tell there was a lot of research involved in this book.I loved learning about the different equipment, there are so many things out there that can be used to detect a spirit. Although there are some places that Pamela cannot give out too much information since they are private locations, I loved how there was contact information if you would like to visit yourself.I loved this book. There is lots of information and a very entertaining read. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. full of history and information and some creepy ghost box conversations By Sharon Stogner I've read a couple of Pamela Kinney's non-fiction books about haunted places in Virginia and they are really interesting and fun. I am not a believer of ghosts, but if I personally experienced something I might be swayed. But that doesn't mean I don't love reading about all the history, tales and first-hand accounts about paranormal events.This book focuses on Petersburg, VA and the surrounding areas. I had no idea about all the history of this area. Pamela does a great job of giving detailed facts about the cities and specific buildings. I can't even imagine how much research went into the book. She also includes folk tales associated with the areas as well as talking to residents about their knowledge.She was only able to give histories and maybe some interviews about some of the buildings because they were private residences, but there are also detailed accounts of the investigations she was allowed to conduct. These were fascinating. Kinney used various instruments to communicate with possible spirits. A ghost box was used a lot and I would love to see this in action first-hand.If you love history, the paranormal, and touring haunted areas, then this is a great book to have. Great first hand information By Jetpack The author does a wonderful job of taking the first hand information (mostly Allies, but some Turkish) and let's them tell the story. Several of the accounts come from people who's letters were found after being killed. It's really well done. The agony of long-term Australians in leaving their dead comrades...So difficult to do.If you have any interest in history, easy to recommend. The poor quartermaster who had to destroy the rum.....The ending is perfect.I was able to get when it was free, but definitely worth buying. 7,335 locations - 3/4 of the the story before the end note.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good detail on the least studied part of the campaign By Zachary Ford Overall, a good, solid battle history of the final months of the campaign. The first part is really the most interesting, as it covers the fight for Hill 60. This is the most detailed coverage I have seen given to Hill 60, and it's well done. The operation is broken down at times to company or below level, but there are quite a few good maps that help explain the action. It's easy to follow the detail of the battle. There's quite a few first-hand accounts included is well; some are perhaps quoted at too much length, but there are some interesting stories in them. Inevitably, the other two-thirds of the book are a bit anti-climactic, as pretty much all the major fighting ends at Hill 60. That being said, the rarely covered "stalemate" period is also covered in detail, and the mining and tunneling operations in particular are given a level of tactical detail I haven't seen before. The final part of the book also does a good job covering the evacuation. I'm not sure there were any groundbreaking insights uncovered by the author, but he has produced the most information I have seen of the tail end of the campaign. Well worth the pretty modest price.

1 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Gallipoli By Malenywoman My grandfather, an ANZAC, was killed on 22nd August 1915 on Hill 60 the day after he landed at Gallipoli. So I was very keen to read this book. Unfortunately I was very disappointed.It's really a report of all the battle plans and outcomes- more for a military strategist or army planning exercise on the disastrous decisions of the campaign.There is no real personal connection with the young soldiers and the fear & confusion they experienced along with the terrible privations & their realization that they were being senselessly thrown to be slaughtered.
