Before EPSOM in late June 1944 there remained the chance that a German counterstroke might seriously threaten the bridgehead. After EPSOM, the Allies retained the strategic initiative through to the liberation of France and Belgium. This was a battle in which highly trained but largely inexperienced British ‘follow-up’ divisions, newly arrived in Normandy, confronted some of the best equipped, best led and battle-hardened formations of the Third Reich.Beginning with a set-piece British assault on the German lines in dense terrain, the battle developed into swirling armored action on the open slopes of Hills 112 and 113, before the British turned to grimly defending their gains in the face of concentric attacks by two full SS-Panzer Korps. This entirely new study brings together previously unseen evidence to present an important Normandy battle in very great detail. The unfolding action is illustrated using aerial photography of the battlefield and period Army maps.

Either there can be not enough maps and photos to explain the action, or there is not enough "history" amongst the maps and photos. Here however, the author has done a great job getting the balance right. The text is easy to follow and draws from a wide-range of excellent primary source accounts and portions of many dozens of long out print regimental histories. The various actions of Epsom are explained down to Company and Troop level on an almost hour to hour basis, and both the British and German movements are clearly explained. However it is in the use of aerial photos that the book comes into it's own. At no point in the book are you left not knowing where you are geographically speaking. You can follow the action hedgerow by hedgerow from the air, and both original and modern comparison photos show you where the actions took place. Whether you want to chart the battle from the comfort of your living room or by driving around the Norman countryside this book takes you through the battle step by step.

By History lover Surprising enough not many books are written on Operation Epsom, and this one is certainly one of the most informative. Excellent maps, interesting witness accounts, thorough background information, some small errors, but minor and not annoying, if you want to learn something about how it was, read this book. AND best of all, superb aerial pictures, which provide the reader with great insight about what went on, and the tactics used. I'm amazed to be the first reviewer of this excellent book. Mr. Daglish is one of the best authors on Normandy, and I hope to see many more books like this from this author. He knows the subject well, and makes you feel like being there. Well done!

Far from the books on WW2 that I started reading 35 years ago or so, with one or two sketch maps and a few generic but interesting photos that my or may not have anything to do with the actual event, this was refreshing. Although it was sometimes a bit of work to relate one map or photo from one page to another on another page of actions in adjacent sectors and whatnot, you get a much better feel for what actually happened in this style of format. I also like that the author has done his homework enough and is objective enough to point out that you can't judge from hindsight what actions the combatants took, and gives circumstances that happened that influenced their decisions. Far from the all-knowing armchair general approach that some authors inflict on the combatants. Very refreshing.

Wars throughout history are fought by thousands against thousands. Usually we know the politics, the President, and the "famous" contributers. We are educated of the end results; but what is seldom reflected upon is that the thousands consisted of an accumulation of ones. Individuals, men and women, who had their own lives with their own friends, and families - which were set aside for the priority of fighting for their country. More than a Hat is a compilation of interviews of such individuals. They're not famous. Their names are not blazen in history books. But it wasn't the Generals, or the President, that won the war; it was the people. The singular, common, unacknowledged people. The people who surround us today in restaurants, and bus stops; taking with them quietly everything they know. If we want to truly understand our history from the ground up - we should listen. 100% of author proceeds from this publication go to Veterans' charities so that the many soldiers are taken care of - as they should be - and some can go back to their battlegrounds, wherever they may be, and have the closure they need to find their final peace with it.

More Than a Hat: Memoirs of The World War Two Generation, by Hydee L Hernandez

About the Author “Born into the wrong Generation” her grandmother used to say. Born in Seattle, Washington in 1978, Hydee Hernandez is the granddaughter of a World War II B24 waist-gunner POW, as well as the niece of a highly-decorated Vietnam veteran. Although she never truly knew either of them she proudly incorporates their legacy within her great admiration of Veterans. Hydee attributes the start of this fascination to her grandmother, Gloria Jean Vineall, who influenced her love of “the Greatest Generation” through exposure to the music, fashion, and the integrity of the era. It was in grade school that she and her father would watch a Vietnam-based television show which began a complete immersion into gratitude towards veterans; fully realizing their bravery, and sacrifices. She decided to spend the rest of her life making a point to thank them when she had the opportunity with a goal to be sure they know they’re not forgotten. Hydee’s passion extends to all veterans of every generation, but her heart and soul belong to the WW2 Generation because for her they were the epitome of everything she admires - bravery, honor, and integrity. 100% of author profits go to Veteran's Charities across the U.S.

The author thoroughly explores the "rest of the story" of these veterans, and the narrative is very detailed and informative. It was easy to find myself immersed in the stories of each veteran's struggles and experiences. While both uplifting and realistically poignant, the author's clear command of these heroes' experiences illustrates perfectly this dwindling generation of heroes who, almost to a person, took great pains to NOT be considered heroes. Nice to see some local ties to the Northwest in these stories, with plenty of local history and detail. Well done.

Is America past the Point of No Return? Is it possible that America’s decline is irreversible? If it is, how do we know for sure? What if the Point Of No Return (PONR) is biblical- a specific point in a nation’s life that is measurable? What if the Bible makes it possible to know where America is in God’s balance between revival and judgment? In fact, it does. Hidden in the Old Testament, and confirmed in the New Testament, is a pattern revealing the Life Cycle of Nations. It is based upon absolute principles that control the health or decline of a nation. These principles reveal not just the ‘what’ but also the ‘why’ behind the events and trends we are seeing. Why does God say revival is not possible after the Point of No Return and even rebuked one of the major prophets who was praying for revival? Why was idol worship so central in God’s judgment upon Israel and what are their modern equivalents in America? Why do 7 sequential marker sins reveal where a nation is at any one time and makes it possible to predict what is coming next and when the line is crossed? Other books, such as the Harbinger, have examined specific portions of this cycle, but with this book we see the grand scheme of how God controls the flow of nations. When viewed at this level there is a new confidence of God’s sovereignty and where we as believers fit into His plan. You will be shocked to see how relevant the Bible is to today’s headlines. Instead of a feeling that things are out of control, our culture’s decline will take on a new clarity and individual events will begin to finally make sense. Finally, it is of paramount importance that we know where we are because the Bible’s job description for believers fundamentally changes after the Point of No Return. The OT prophets before the PONR were given one message and a radically different one after. Unless the Church adjusts to the new reality, it will experience disillusionment applying the old paradigms and will not be prepared to fulfill it’s new role and tasks in the coming phase. It’s time to start the discussion. "I would highly recommend reading this book if you want to get a better understanding and be engaged in the times we live in! Frank really practices what he preaches in his life and I have a great respect for the insights God has given to him. Buy 2 copies and send one to a friend! This is a message that needs to be heard." - Kristina Oneal From Prolog to the book: Recently, I was asked to speak on Christian Activism in America at a state homeschool convention. I had put together a presentation but was still not comfortable with unresolved issues. My talk was Saturday afternoon, but when I went to the keynote lecture that morning, the lack of peace was stronger than ever. As I sat there praying about it, the Holy Spirit brought to my mind Jeremiah 4:14, a passage God had given me years ago in my homeschooling activism. But as I turned to it and read the verses, suddenly a flood of passages started to enter into my mind. A message outline quickly formed and I wrote down an outline sketch and as much of the thoughts as possible. After the keynote was over, I retreated to the speakers’ lounge and, with only about 90 minutes until my workshop, started putting it all together. Another speaker came in, and seeing what was going on, said, “Putting the final touches on your talk?” To which I replied “Not really”. He stopped, and said, “Oh, a total rewrite?” I nodded, and he added, “I’ve also had the Lord do that to me before, and it is both scary and exciting.” Later, after the workshop was over, I had attendees come up and say that it had really ministered to them. They said they had been struggling with the same issues over the last few years, and this had really helped to get a new perspective as well as some encouragement. What follows here is that rewrite, and I present it praying God will use it for you as he did others that afternoon.

By steve The Point of No Return by Frank Strickland is a sobering analysis of how our country parallels the cycle of other nations, notably Israel, in a downward spiral leading to judgment, oppression, and finally deliverance. Along the pathway of this decent to judgment certain "marker sins" are prevalent, such as, violence (especially the bloodshed of innocent children), lewdness and promiscuity, and accepting evil as good. I highly recommend Frank's book for anyone who has recently felt that our country is caught in an accelerating downward cycle marked by immorality and rebellion. Additionally, Frank outlines what the faithful remnant should and could be doing at this point in our country's history. Stephen A. Trost Attorney & Executive Director Good News Legal Clinic

By Tom Johnson "Mr. Strickland has penned a compelling welI thought it was a well thought out, a well presented case that we as a country are nearing, or at the PONR. It is an interesting companion to the Harbinger book, which was written as a fictional novel, with limited scriptural resources. His book provides much more scriptural backing for the case. I also (and I say this as a pretty conservative guy) thought at times his conservative views, calling out liberal groups, may be off putting. I did really like this point (however). It points how our values are shifting."If you read the Harbinger, but were looking for more biblical backing of the impending fall, this is your book. We wouldn’t cross a railroad track when all the lights are flashing, and the arms are down. Yet, we as Americans continue down this road, with all of the warning signs. If you had not seen the signs before, Mr. Strickland gives us plenty of examples. It’s time to wake up America!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent and Sobering Analysis By Scott F. Hill Mr. Strickland has done an excellent job of interweaving current events in the US with Scriptural references and analysis. He clearly identifies the biblical life cycle of a nation and uses God's Word to "walk the reader through" how the United States is traveling on this path. An excellent and sobering analysis that will mobilize Christians in prayer.
