Craft You will want to read this story -- it is a great telling of the story of the brilliant, but little-known, Margaret, Queen of Scotland. Set in Medieval times. It is so interesting that I immediately reread it. And I want my name to be Margaret.

Sykes I found myself intrigued by her story and at the same time jealous of the woman she was. A woman of faith, she allowed God to work his plans in her life. In her short life she studied and learned more thanmost do in a lifetime. Her kindness to the less fortunate was amazing and her children were all great examples of her parenting skills and her fine example. It was a great short read and it held my attention. As they say "I couldn't put it down". It was fun that I know the author and could see her personality come through.

She has carefully researched her subject, then spun the facts together in a most readable fashion. History comes alive with her pen. I loved reading about Saint Margaret. She used her status as Queen for good. Indeed, her life was pope-like in her care for the poor. This excellent profile of an educated queen married to an illiterate king and the accomplishments of their collective lives would make a provocative movie -- or maybe it already has! Anyway, I enjoyed the history lesson.

The Reversal and Transformation of Global Christianity"It would be hard to overestimate the valuable contribution Scott Sunquist has made to our understanding of the global Christian movement. This short volume illustrates the point. His knowledge is encyclopedic, his perspective fresh. This volume serves as an excellent introduction to what appeared at the beginning to be the century of Western dominance but ended up being so very different. As Sunquist intimates, we are witnessing the most dramatic century of change since the early Christian period."--Gerald L. Sittser, Whitworth University; author of Water from a Deep Well"This book provides a learned overview of major themes in twentieth-century world Christianity. Distinguished scholar Scott Sunquist, writing from an insider Christian perspective, shows how such factors as migration, persecution, the decline of Western Christianity, and Pentecostalism have created a religion far different from that of a century ago. He balances depth and breadth in a readable format and, in so doing, provides a valuable addition to the growing body of scholarship on world Christianity."--Dana L. Robert, Boston University; author of Christian Mission: How Christianity Became a World Religion"This volume places us in Sunquist's debt for extending the Christian story beyond the familiar clichés, luminaries, and events of conventional Western church histories to a trajectory that includes and accounts for the fecund world of Christianity in the global South. Full of surprises, this is an astounding, fast-moving story, whose latest chapter was not and could not have been predicted by earlier generations of church historians."--Jonathan J. Bonk, Overseas Ministries Study Center"A godsend for opening up a vitally important history and pointing the way toward responsible Christian life in the future."--Mark A. Noll (from the foreword)

Insightful and Relevant Study of the 20th Century Church By Gwen The Unexpected Christian Century examines the movements affecting Global Christianity in the 20th century. The book is extremely well-researched, and yet, like all of Sunquist's books, it remains readable. As a resource for scholars, or information for general audiences, the book has great takeaways for anyone interested in global Christian movements. The thematic orientation works well for the book. Being that the book tackles more recent history, I appreciated being less muddled up in a timeline of events and more in thematic threads that continue to affect the church today. In fact, all of the themes remain relevant as Christianity continues to ebb and flow under the influences of various powers and movements on the world stage.

As a fairly informed Catholic, I see parallels between the experiences of my church and that of our "separated brothers:" the collapse of Christendom in the first-world balanced by the rise of a vibrant third-world Christianity. As part of an overall picture of Christianity, this book provides an essential introduction on its growth and shifts in the last century. However, as a global survey of such a momentous period, it could not provide details on any one individual, country, or movement. I suppose that this could be a criticism of any textbook, no matter how well written: to cover everything essential to the overall picture, the view must remain very high level, and the story has to shift quickly from one topic to the next. Perhaps the worth of such a book can be judged by whether the reader is left wanting to learn more; in that sense, the book worked for me.

A Must-Read for Followers of Christ By Soulfarer Histories of Christianity, while opening the reader’s eyes to fascinating and dramatic developments, are often focused on the Christian church’s movements through Europe and North America. Scott Sunquist takes us to places across the globe that provide evidence of the great diversity and deep spirituality of the church’s emergence across all borders. While some might claim that Christianity is characterized as predominantly white and affluent, Sunquist provides a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic portrait of a church energized more by the work of God’s Spirit than by the forces of politics, nationalism, or ethnic identity. This very accessible book is a must-read for followers of Christ who want to understand their faith as a global, dynamic reality that is neither hindered nor defined by nation-states.

Long before neatly cultivated rows of pineapple fields stretched out as far as one could see, demon spirits are said to have made Lanai uninhabitable for humans. The spirits were banished by a young man from Lahaina who is credited with forming the first settlement on the island. Centuries later, in 1778, warriors battled on the islands steep cliffs and drove their enemies to their deaths. Every living thing was destroyed, all except for one man who saved himself by leaping off a cliff into the ocean and swimming to safety. Time heals, and the land endured. When winter storms turned barren slopes green again, the natives returned and were followed in later years by men who carved their names into the history of Lanai.

By missy hillmer As a native of Long Prairie myself, Adrian has done a very exceptional job on the history and hauntings of the Christy House.. I often walked by the Christy house as a child in awe and wonder of such an extravegant house. With all the history of the house and families who once lived there. and the investigations he and his team have performed there are the most interesting things I have read in his book. Not to mention that part of the proceeds of this book are being donated to the Christy House Museum to keep it going for generations to come. And to learn and explore, not to mention, they will get to experience time long gone, is a very humble thing to do. So thank you Adrian for this in depth book which is very interesting and inspiring.
