I'm glad to see that it is in print so I could get one of the first copies of this book, as I am sure that it will be famous. This is one of my favorite books that I have ever read. This is one of the most interesting theories like this that I have heard of in a while. I have been aware of the historical existence of giants, had no idea of their importance. This book is very easy to read and understand. Everything in the book is explained and has references. It is like an encyclopedia. I don't find any parts of the book offensive. It makes more sense than aliens helping mankind build pyramids, etc. The theory in this book fills in a lot of gaps in a lot of history.

John Brown used photographs to raise funds and recruit followers to fight for liberation of slaves. Since publication and exhibition in 2009 there are new discoveries of a John Brown daguerreotype and a tintype. There are fourteen original portrait sittings of the abolitionist John Brown. This full-color catalog of the exhibition with supplement inserts adds many historic details and context of his life and movements.

Most of Brown's his original portraits were daguerreotypes. The prints are as close as possible to the original source, resulting in detail that is astonishing when compared with the familiar renditions in textbooks and the Internet. Abolitionist and Free-State emigration to Kansas sponsors of several of the sittings wanted to utilize his charismatic force evident in the new medium.

About the Author

Jean Libby is a longtime chronicler of events and people associated with the John Brown raid. She began this independent journey in 1977 with assistance from the African American community in Jefferson County, West Virginia. She continued at the University of California, Berkeley, with a President's Undergraduate Fellowship to create a cable classroom program John Brown's Black Nation Campaign. As each decade brought new research and experiences, Jean developed a collection of reproductions of the original photographic portraits of John Brown.

In 2002 she began focusing on the images with the contribution of forensic analysis Dr. Eileen Barrow of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge for identification and aging. Jean Libby s analyses were published in the annual of The Daguerreian Society Annual 2002-2003 and by Palgrave MacMillan in a collection of essays, The Afterlife of John Brown in 2005 ( John Brown, Bearded Patriarch ).

Jean Libby is a retired instructor of U.S. History and Ethnic Studies at community colleges in northern California. She has written, edited, and photographed widely on John Brown the abolitionist since 1978. She is now a small publisher named for the ad hoc group of teachers, librarians, and local historians formed in 1999 who published John Brown Mysteries by Allies for Freedom.

After completing a Professional Photography A. A. degree in 1978, she enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, as a re-entry student, completing her B.A. in Social Science / African American Studies in 1986. Jean was awarded a President s Undergraduate Fellowship at the University of California to document her thesis on John Brown, Mean To Be Free: John Brown s Black Nation Campaign on videotape for the cable classroom series. She holds an M.A. in Ethnic Studies from San Francisco State University, receiving the Outstanding Graduate Student award at the School of Ethnic Studies in 1991.

By Midwest Book Review John Brown Photo Chronology: Catalog of the Exhibition at Harpers Ferry 2009 is a compendium of historic black-and-white photographs and images of John Brown (1800-1859), the notorious abolitionist who led an anti-slavery revolt in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. The text goes into detail on the origin of each black-and-white image, as well as offering the reader a grounding in the Brown's dramatic and historic rebellion. An excellent addition to Virginia history collections, and easily the next best thing to visiting the exhibition at Harpers Ferry in person!

About the Author Walter Young was a Londoner, who joined the Territorial Army before the outbreak of war, and was called up to fight in the First World War in 1914, serving in the London Regiment of the Post Office Rifles. He earned a Military Medal for bravery and ended the war as a prisoner of war. He kept his memoirs secret and they were not discovered till after his death.

The mud, the fields of dead left there for days or weeks, trenches collapsing, the desolation of the battlefields. The platoons or regiments weren’t at the front continuously. They would be pulled back for rest, and the men could experience a whole different, normal life just a few miles from the frontlines. Villagers remained in their homes if possible, despite the occasional shells falling among them.This is the first that I’ve read of the experiences of prisoners of war in Germany. Their lives may have been safer than in WWII, but they also had starvation diets and dangerous work, for Walter, in a mine.Excellent book.

Fundamental Sources By El Cutachero THis book is a facsimile reprint of a fiftieth anniversary of WWII joint publication compiled by the US Army Center of Military History and the History Office of the US Army Intelligence and Security Command and published by the GPO. As official works of the US government are not copyrighted, anyone can reprint them either facsimile or reset.The story of pre WWII rivalry between the US Navy and the US Army signal intelligence units has long been known. Because of the sensitivity of the original sources and methods involved the WWII information was to be kept long classified although after the later establishment of the DOD National Security Agency amalgamating rhe Army and Navy organizations and the NSA's ensuing changeover to mightily powerful electronic computers replacing the older WWII era electro-mechanical decyphering machines by the fifties made the continuing classification really unnecessary.The most well known achievements of American SIGINT in WWII are the decoding of the German Enigma devices and the breaking of the Japanese codes.The broad outines of the WWII American SIGINT operations have long been known. In the eighties a series of reports known as SRH was finally declassified and sent to the National Archives. These histories and executive summaries include detailed acounts of organizational matters during the War and earlier.Though this publisher has added some illustrations and an index, you do not need it if you have the original Government edition. I must express my annoyance with the publisher's blurb omission of the fact this is indeed a reissue. If it had been so stated, I would not have purchased it, and been spared the inconvenience of returning ir.Though many details of operations and methods concerning WWII SIGINT have long been known, the documents published here are primary sources. Thst said, if you are a serious student of SIGINT you must have this book in whatever edition.

Her book is very readable as she delves into Dorsey’s amazing career in the military By Edward Browne Mari Grani is brave to have waded into the muddy turbulent waters of the historical record of Stephen W. Dorsey. Her book is very readable as she delves into Dorsey’s amazing career in the military, politics and business. Dorsey’s own false statements, however, makes her task difficult. “Several books of the type that list biographical sketches of ‘great men of the West’ were published about Los Angeles notables before Dorsey’s death…Through these authors, Dorsey must have determined to rewrite his own history, since much of the information…was most likely supplied by the subject himself.” (p. 110). Partially because of this and of inaccurate historical writings by other more recent authors (as an example see Lowry’s Portrait of an Age), Dorsey’s military accomplishments are inaccurate and are fouled with the stench of Dorsey’s egotistical pen. Unfortunately Grana’s brief description of Dorsey’s military career only continues that trend.Grana makes no mention of Dorsey’s service as a lieutenant in Battery E, First Ohio Light Artillery. It was not until May 1864 that Dorsey transferred to Battery H and took over as Captain. Dorsey did not help “stave off the Confederate assault on Washington, defending the city only blocks from the White House.” (p. 8) Battery H did not arrive in Washington until July 16, days after Jubal Early’s threat to the Capital had subsided (Battle of Fort Stevens July 11/12, 1864). Dorsey did not witness Lee’s surrender at Appomattox (p. 8), for Battery H was not in the Appomattox Campaign and had been ordered to City Point. Fortunately Grana does not fall for the blather that Dorsey served with Sheriden in the 1864 Valley Campaign for Battery H was on detached duty on the Petersburg front. Grana does not pick up on the irony of Dorsey’s brevet to Lieutenant Colonel in 1867 for “gallant and meritorious services at the battles of Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg.” Battery H was in reserve during the battle of the Wilderness (May 5-7, 1864) and Dorsey arrived later on May 14. Dorsey took command of Battery H on May 16, but the Battery was again in reserve for the Spotsylvania battle (May 8-21). Dorsey was in command while the Battery was heavily engaged at both Cold Harbor and Petersburg. Dorsey probably loved to flaunt his brevet’s citation, and even in death Dorsey seemingly mocks the uninformed passerby for his gravestone is inscribed “Lieut. Colonel Union Army 1861 to 1865.” That inscription gives the false impression that Dorsey was an important Union officer who served at a high rank throughout the War. In reality, Dorsey should be more accurately remembered as a captain for that was his rank when the Battery was mustered out in June 1865. I would love to have given this book a ranking of 5, but with the historical inaccuracies it was reduced to a 4, which I further reduced to a 3, as I was bothered that perhaps other passages were inaccurate. Anyways, it was an enjoyable book and worth the read.

Mari Graňa Explores the Life of a Delusional-Narcissist Dealmaker Who Sought Political Power By Amazon Customer On the Fringes of Power, by Mari Graňa, is a biography of Senator Stephen W. Dorsey, one of the more unscrupulous characters of the late 19th century. The book is a humorous recounting of the senator's fraudulent enterprises: bribing his way into the US Senate; ripping off the US postal service; grabbing 600,000 acres of public land; selling a herd of cattle twice to the same unsuspecting buyer; cheating a woman out of her investment in a gold mine, and on. All of these are done with panache and money under the table; and almost always he's cunning enough to get away with his tricks. Writing a biography requires deciding which information is actually true and which is self-promotion left for posterity by the character himself. And Senator Dorsey had a high estimation of his own accomplishments, as for example his claim to be a Civil War hero, or his claim to be the engineer for the Hudson River subway tunnel under construction between New York and New Jersey. Senator Dorsey is a character out of the “Gilded Age”: everything he does or says is excess. Senator Dorsey’s allies, investors and followers were captivated by his self aggrandizing sales pitches. “Exaggeration and truthful hyperbole” trumpeted in this election cycle is the hallmark of our current turbulent times.I would definitely rate this well-written biography with 5 stars.S.F.
