About the Author Walter Young was a Londoner, who joined the Territorial Army before the outbreak of war, and was called up to fight in the First World War in 1914, serving in the London Regiment of the Post Office Rifles. He earned a Military Medal for bravery and ended the war as a prisoner of war. He kept his memoirs secret and they were not discovered till after his death.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Life as it was for a WWI soldier By Always Reading Walter’s War is a fascinating glimpse of a soldier’s life in World War I. The mud, the fields of dead left there for days or weeks, trenches collapsing, the desolation of the battlefields. The platoons or regiments weren’t at the front continuously. They would be pulled back for rest, and the men could experience a whole different, normal life just a few miles from the frontlines. Villagers remained in their homes if possible, despite the occasional shells falling among them.This is the first that I’ve read of the experiences of prisoners of war in Germany. Their lives may have been safer than in WWII, but they also had starvation diets and dangerous work, for Walter, in a mine.Excellent book.
