One day in England in 1936, a sixteen-year-old schoolboy riding steeplechase gets a message that his father, King Fouad I of Egypt has died. Instantly, the young prince, thereafter known as King Farouk, is swept upon the tumultuous world stage of pre-WWII. This biography tells the story of a young ruler who assumes the throne of a country struggling to rise on its own youthful legs of independence. Farouk must take up the mantle of his father and move his country into the twentieth century socially, economically, and politically. To add to this ominous task, he must also struggle with the decisions of which path his government will follow and what side it will choose as the Allied and Axis powers form their own alliances. With the strategic jewel of the Suez Canal in his backyard, he is the darling of both sides and endures great pressure while he attempts to remove Egypt from the mindset of colonialism. This is an eye-opening account of scenes from WWII that do not appear on modern history channels. It is a story that needs to be understood in order to grasp today’s modern conflicts both in the Middle East and globally.

Captain Ben Ringsdorf was locked away for six and a half years in the Hanoi Hilton, the most notorious prison camp in the Vietnam War. After he and the rest of his captive soldiers were freed at war’s end, he was greeted with not only a hero’s welcome, but a “ready- made” family. However, even with all of the accolades and love he received, Ben faced physical, mental and emotional challenges just as daunting as his imprisonment, ones that threatened to tear his family apart. While things appear to look bright for the Ringsdorf family, their patriarch soon finds himself haunted by past memories and debilitated by alcoholism and a sense of paranoia, signs of the (at the time) not-yet-diagnosed PTSD. After the Music Stops is Gloria Gayden Corona’s memoir of her promising – yet whirlwind – relationship with the former POW, chronicling their blossoming romance, Ben’s repatriation and desire for a medical career, and his struggle with mental illness.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ALL THAT GLITTERS . . . By Amazon Customer At first glance, I feared Gloria Gayden Corona's book "After the Music Stops" might not have much to teach me. I already knew plenty about families riddled with alcohol and dogged by tragedy. I couldn't have been more wrong. No matter how much we think we know, there is much to be learned from this straightforward account of the author's heartbreaking marriage to a war hero unable to find relief from deep-hidden war wounds that include devastating symptoms of PTSD. Upon his return from six and a half years in a POW prison camp in Vietnam, Ben Ringsdorf met the glamorous and recently divorced Gloria Gayden Hall at the home of their shared friend, Cornelia Wallace, wife of then Alabama Governor George Wallace. The meeting turned into a whirlwind romance amid worldwide travel and many grand occasions celebrating his release along with 115 others at the end of the war. The two settled in Mobile, Alabama, with Gloria's two young children and their newborn daughter and set about making a family together while he studied medicine and established a practice there. Gradually, his alcoholism and the ravages of his war years destroyed the marriage and resulted in his death. We are left, in the end, with a woman's heroic 25-year struggle to save her family and a heartfelt plea for understanding and proper medical care for all veterans particularly those who suffer from PTSD. JUDITH PATERSON, AUTHOR OF "SWEET MYSTERY: A BOOK OF REMEMBERING"

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Open Your Eyes, My Fellow Countrymen By carlotta capers Mrs. Corona writes about her marriage to her POW husband with love and compassion. I hope this book will renew the interest in the lives of the Vienam veterans after the war and how they still suffer. Her husband suffered but so did she and her children. Around us everyday here in San Antonio we see in bold relief the broken bodies here. We see the missing limbs, we can't often see the broken minds and hearts. It is my hope this book will help raise the consciousness of the country and bring pressure on our government to give these men and women and their families the medical and psychological help they need to function in our society once again.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A work of philosophy as pleasurable to read as any work of Nietzsche's By keefe bergmann The art of the aphorism utilized in this book is as effective and pleasurable to read as Nietzsche's, who pioneered this style of writing in philosophy. Shestov covers everything from existentialism to Plato and Socrates to Russian literature and to life in general. A great read for fans of Nietzsche who are looking for something similar in style. Obviously he is no Nietzsche, as nobody will ever come close to touching the absolute genius and sheer brilliance that was Nietzsche, but Shestov is a fun read for fans of Russian literature, existentialism, and aphorisms resembling those of the greatest man ever to use them. All in all, this book is very interesting as there are not many Russian philosophers whose main focus existentialism, thus it offers a fresh as well as refreshing take on the most popular philosophy of the 20th century.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A great - and sadly neglected - thinker By John Aaron I'm not certain how I came upon Shestov - he's hardly well known. But I'm certainly glad that I did. He's unlike any other philosopher I've read. He has no apparent interest in creating any system. But his insights - communicated in brief epigraphs - and consistently thought provoking, challenging, and profound. He forces me to reexamine my preconceptions across a range of subjects. And that is of great value. But beyond that, he seems a kindred spirit. I don't know that he'd resonate with everyone - but if you're looking for some new ways of thinking about morality, philosophy, and the human condition? Give All Things Are Possible a try...

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Extraordinary thinker and proponent of anti-philosophy. By LaFayette I was late getting on the Shestov Express. An original, witty, and penetrating thinker. His prose and ideas instantly grab you. To my taste, he's a better aphorist than Nietzsche. A key, yet overlooked figure in the history of existentialism. His adherents included E.M.Cioran and Georges Bataille.

A heartwarming "boy and his dog" tale about loving all people you come in contact with regardless of race, color, or creed.

Author's note:

It is my hope that after sharing my story with your child, it sparks a conversation about all the wonderful types of people in the world.

When I was a boy, my greatest fear was my dog running away and that manifested itself in a reoccurring dream. That dream was the impetus for After All, Dogs Are Color Blind, Aren't They? It dawned on me after reflecting on my dream that man's best friend makes immediate friends with everyone they meet, and that is a wonderful life lesson I hope to share with my kids as well as yours.

Humor, insight and the occasional razor blade fill the delightful stories in "Pretty Boy Floyd's Clarinet." I was especially moved by the novella-length title story, a coming-of-age tale of music and mayhem in Dust-Bowl Oklahoma.Shakely, who is the recipient of the Oklahoma Book Award for fiction, never strays far from his home in Indian Territory, but his stories are universal. A must read

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great stories for the heart and the head. By Barry Yelton Jack Shakely's latest book is a treasure trove of homespun stories that both warm the heart and tease the imagination. Shakely is known for telling stories in a unique and folksy fashion which make reading them a particular pleasure. His knowledge of Oklahoma, its people, and traditions is impressive. Each story herein is different in nature. The one constant in Shakely's writing is that it holds the reader in the time and place. The writing draws one along in a sometimes comfortable, sometimes startling way. You feel as though you are sitting by a fireside with the author telling the tale as though he had told it a thousand times with the same enthusiasm and warmth each time it is told. The story of Pretty Boy Floyd's clarinet is so unique and surprising, it alone is worthy of an award. This is quite a collection of stories which shouldappeal to a broad audience. Very highly recommended.Barry D. Yelton, author of Season of the Crow and Scarecrow in Gray

Effigy Hunter is a literary genre-bender. There’s nothing like it. It’s nonfiction medieval history, genealogy, monument photography, travelogue, a bucket list of where to go on your effigy hunt, anecdotes about the people behind—or under—the effigies, and a lesson in religious symbols and what they meant to the people who made them. This book contains more than 60 original images, and tables with more than 900 medieval names and burial places in Great Britain and Europe. Many of the subjects were royals or aristocrats, and others were famous or forgotten—until now. If you’re interested in ancestry research, this book is indispensable: you’ll learn what some of your ancestors looked like, and chances are great that you share many of these ancestors with millions of people living today, so you can find out more about what kind of people they were as you extend your lines. You need Effigy Hunter as your trail guide. | Chapters: | Church Monuments | In the beginning, hundreds of years later | I see dead people! | The parts of a medieval church | Stories, images, and tables of 900+ medieval burials | ..United Kingdom: .....England by counties .....Wales .....Scotland .....Ireland | ..Pilgrims and Crusaders | ..France-Flanders-Aquitaine-Normandy | ..Germany-Bavaria-Saxony | ..Hungary | ..Italy | ..Ukraine and Russia | ..Spain and Portugal | Tips for your effigy hunt | Bonus! Do you have an interest in genealogy? Do you look for a burial place in hopes of finding an ancestor or person from history? Are you curious about why people were buried they way they were, or where they are? Do you have an interest in the intricate symbolism in churches and tombs? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this book is for you! Christy K. Robinson tells us about all these things through personal experience and impeccable research. I found I couldn't put it down. Easy to read, with tables of names, dates, and specific places that are very easy to follow. My favorite part of the book would have to be chapter 3, which describes the parts of a medieval church. The stories of who founded these churches and who are buried there are quite interesting. The intricate details of tombs and how they change through the centuries are also included. We get glimpses into these people's lives which makes this book all the more interesting. I guess if I had to describe this book it would be "The book you didn't know you needed, but you do!" A must for medieval lovers.

Ling I received this book from the author as an advanced reader not really knowing what to expect, but I was delightfully captivated!I love history for many reasons. Connecting with a past that is far removed from our present is an adventure -- learning about the movers and shakers of the day, what motivated them, and how they shaped the world, all of which is a good study for modern people; but perhaps what is most interesting to me about history above all things is connecting with the day-to-day lives of ordinary people who lived and breathed, who had hopes and dreams for life, and who did the best they could with the life they were given. Christy Robinson, in her forward, states about her book that it is a "history of human beings whose lives are mostly forgotten." She uses the effigies of long-dead people to try to breath some life into the people behind the stone, saying "it's not about the blank stare of the 700-year-old marble effigy -- it's the reminder of the person it represents." In her search for each effigy, she, like others who go in search of ancestors, appreciated the connection with these people whose effigies grace the many churches across Europe, taking in the notion that the people whose effigies now stand cold and dark in those places actually stood in those same places at some point in their lives. The effigies provide a way to wonder about the lives of the people, not just wonder at their tombs. After a bit of introduction, the book follows a trail of effigies regionally throughout mostly Great Britain, but also onto Continental Europe. Information is given about the effigies themselves, the detailed information about their locations and condition, but vignettes of certain individuals make the reading very easy and enjoyable. It's part travelogue/part reference book in a way I have never encountered before. Robinson has a very easy and casual writing style, easily accessible by the casual reader and more serious history student alike.I would recommend this book to people interested in history and genealogy as well as anyone planning trips involving these regions to do a similar search of their own. A lot of time and care was put into the writing of this book, and it is a worthwhile companion for any traveler.

Clark This is an excellent guide for anyone searching for resting places of their ancestors among the churches of England. Set out county by county, it is a friendly book, easy to read and very informative. Far from just a list of places and people, Ms Robinson has little stories to tell about many of the people whose effigies she has successfully hunted. An invaluable resource for anyone undertaking family research, or just those intrigued by the names and stories behind the crumbling stone images, brass plaques and magnificent tombs.

An hilarious account of a Manchester United fan’s 18-year long quest to get his hands on a FA Cup final ticket. Along the way witnessing some of the most momentous events in late 20th century football history – the last days of the terraces, the Hillsborough disaster and the rise of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United. Part Kes, part Boys from the Blackstuff, it also paints a vivid portrait of working-class culture - from punk, the miner's strike, unemployment to MaDchester and Brit-pop. 2015 - NOW REVISED, ADDED TO AND UPDATED. 'One look, won over' ***** Four Four Two **** Total Football 'A great read' 4/5 Glory Glory Man United (MUFC official magazine) ‘For younger fans, there is an intoxicating account of the run-in to Fergie's first title triumph in 1993, while older fans will relish exhilarating memories of United in the 70's, a decade of Cup finals and cock-ups. If the Kids are United, by Tony Hill

Review 'A witty insight into the loneliness of the long-distance red. Like Hill's life, the book is balanced between two worlds - the very real world of Jacksdale, and the almost mythical world of Old Trafford, which haunts the young Hill's mind much in the same way as Atlantis must have menaced the infant Captain Nemo. And while it's hard to describe villages like Jacksdale without straying into parody, Hill describes his village and his family with wit and pathos.' ***** Four Four Two **** Total Football 'A great read' 4/5 Glory Glory Man United (MUFC official magazine) 'For younger fans, there is an intoxicating account of the run-in to Fergie's first title triumph in 1993, while older fans will relish exhilarating memories of United in the 70's, a decade of Cup finals and cock-ups. About the Author Tony Hill hails from Jacksdale, an old mining village on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border, deep in D.H. Lawrence country. The world famous writer used to come dancing in Tony's village, where he had a great time, until, allegedly, getting knocked out for not supporting a local team. This is mentioned in Tony's books If the Kids are United and The Palace and the Punks. One of the last authors to be published by Victor Gollancz (before the Orion takeover), his - Kes evoking - book If the Kids are United was called 'the working-class Fever Pitch,' and received 5 and 4 star reviews. A punk writer, his style is fast paced and spontaneous.

PDF Ebook Ancient China and the Yue: Perceptions and Identities on the Southern Frontier, c.400 BCE-50 CE, by Erica Fox Brindley

In this innovative study, Erica Brindley examines how, during the period 400 BCE-50 CE, Chinese states and an embryonic Chinese empire interacted with peoples referred to as the Yue/Viet along its southern frontier. Brindley provides an overview of current theories in archaeology and linguistics concerning the peoples of the ancient southern frontier of China, the closest relations on the mainland to certain later Southeast Asian and Polynesian peoples. Through analysis of warring states and early Han textual sources, she shows how representations of Chinese and Yue identity invariably fed upon, and often grew out of, a two-way process of centering the self while de-centering the other. Examining rebellions, pivotal ruling figures from various Yue states, and key moments of Yue agency, Brindley demonstrates the complexities involved in identity formation and cultural hybridization in the ancient world and highlights the ancestry of cultures now associated with southern China and Vietnam.

Review "Through in-depth investigation of textual and material sources, Erica Brindley provides a fascinating study of Yue/Viet history, identity, and relations with China. Her book is not only a long-overdue addition to our knowledge of the southern frontier of ancient China, but a key contribution to debates about identity and ethnicity in the ancient world." Nicola Di Cosmo, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton"Brindley's book is a path-breaking exploration of an understudied subject: the Yue and its relationship to its northern Chinese neighbor. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Asian history, as well as empires, archaeology, and antiquity." Miranda Brown, University of Michigan

About the Author Erica Brindley is an intellectual and cultural historian of early China (500 BC to 200 AD). Her interests include the philosophical and religious texts, cultural norms, and political cultures that were born and flourished during this time. She is also interested in the history of identity and cross-cultural interactions between the Sinitic cultures of the North and their southern neighbors along the East Asian coast. She is the author of Music, Cosmology, and the Politics of Harmony in Early China (2012) and Individualism in Early China: Human Agency and the Self in Thought and Politics (2010). She has also written many articles on a wide range of topics for philosophy and Asian studies journals and has co-edited volumes related to excavated texts and maritime East Asian history. Brindley has been awarded the prestigious Charles A. Ryskamp Research Fellowship and a Humboldt Research Fellowship for her work on various projects related to the ancient southern frontier. She also serves on the editorial collective for the new journal, Verge, and on the editorial board for the journal Early China.

Anderson This book gives a very thorough picture of the Yue--the ancient Chinese collective name for the people in what is now south China. The word survives in Vietnam (Yue south--Viet and Yue being the modern pronunciations in the respective languages of a word originally something like yiwat.) Erica Fox Brindley transports us from delightful folktales of wild folk to the very real tomb in Guangzhou of the last king of Yue--the descendent of a Han Dynasty general who had carved out an independent kingdom. Brindley covers the archaeology and linguistic prehistory of the region with great thoroughness. It is pretty obvious that south China then--before it became Chinese culturally and linguistically--had pretty much the languages it has now, but in earlier forms: Thai, Austronesian, Austroasiatic, Hmong-Mian and possibly other language groups were represented. Brindley notes that Thai and Austronesian may be related, and this has just received support from Gerhard Jager, writing in PNAS a couple of weeks ago on his enormous project of linguistic comparison. The few words shared at a very basic level do look to me like cognates, but very early borrowing is not ruled out. Most of southeast China in Han Dynasty times probably spoke one or another Tai-Kadai language; surviving bits of transliteration, local loanwords, and local customs testify to this. Brindley is most interesting when recounting the ancient Chinese beliefs, stereotypes, and visions of the Yue, who were often used as "noble savages" very much as Montaigne and Rousseau used "savages" to show up European affectation. This is a delightful book and fun to read. As one who studied the fishermen of south China years ago, I am particularly pleased to see the Yue recognized as fishers, good swimmers, and water people way back in Han and pre-Han times.

The First World War brought a new kind of horror for man to endure. Not only the constant threat of bullets, bombs and gas, but also living conditions that were so bad, if we had been animals today, the British Army would have been in trouble for animal cruelty. I was one of the lucky ones to survive the trenches when millions did not make it back home, from all sides. The visions of my time in the trenches are etched in my mind as if it was yesterday. I can still see faces screaming out in pain, asking to be put out of their misery, mounds made up of bodies that cast an eerie shadow under the moonlight. The stench of death mixed with cordite wafting over you in the breeze…

The Highlanders of Scotland (Classic Reprint), by William Forbes Skene

About the Author WILLIAM FORBES SKENE was born at Inverie, in Kincardineshire, in 1809. His father was James Skene of Rubislaw, near Aberdeen, Scott’s great friend, a lawyer and litterateur; his mother was a daughter of Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo. Young Skene was reared among surroundings that brought him into contact with the best literary men of that day in Scotland. He received his early education in Edinburgh High School, and even at that early age he devoted some attention to Gaelic, which was no doubt natural, as he was connected maternally with the Glengarry family. Besides, being somewhat delicate as a young lad, he was, on Scott’s suggestion, sent to Laggan, in Badenoch, to board with the famous Gaelic scholar, Dr. Mackintosh Mackay. These facts account for his devotion to Celtic history, and also, no doubt, as has been suggested, for his bias towards the families of Cluny and Glengarry as against Mackintosh and Clanranald. In 1824 he went to Germany, where he sojourned for a year and a half, and where he acquired a taste for philology, which, however, never passed the amateur stage with him. Thereafter he attended St. Andrew’s University for a session, and for another Edinburgh University, and being destined for the legal profession he served his legal apprenticeship with his relative, Sir William Jardine, and became W.S. in 1832. He held an appointment in the Court of Session for many years, becoming latterly Depute-Clerk of Court. In the meantime he had become the head of a prominent legal firm, a position which he held to his death. It is interesting to note that Robert Louis Stevenson spent some of his time trying to learn law in Dr. Skene’s firm. In the later years of his life he devoted himself, in the comparative freedom which he attained from business cares and engagements, to putting his thoughts and researches in Scoto-Celtic history into shape, and "Celtic Scotland" appeared in 1876-1880 in three volumes—his magnum opus. He succeeded Burton in 1881 as Historiographer Royal for Scotland, and had been made LL.D. of Edinburgh University and D.C.L. of Oxford in 1879. Dr. Skene took much interest in religious and philanthropic work, and produced in this connection a work entitled "Gospel History for the Young" (3 vols., 1883-4).

By Charlie Weir Bear in mind that this book is about the history of Scotland, written in the 19th century when, shall we say, certain classist and racist assumptions were taken as scientific truths, and there had been many centuries of efforts by "those in power" to dull the light of their foes while polishing their own myths. Mr, Skene steps into this morass and acts rather Sherlock Holmesian in his dissection of the culture and its influences. He goes far back to the Greek historians, and the medieval monks, following the spoor of the Scots and their unique history in Europe. The chapters about the Picts and their history alone - I have a Pictish ancestor and also belong to Clan MacNachtan, descendents of Pictish kings - does a better job of understanding them than we are nowadays, comparing historians' notes to get the lost grain of truth and ferreting out the schemes, intrigues and alliances which doomed these ancients as a culture by the 11th century.Much of the actual science of his era is now being re-examined with a revisionist intent. Yeah, there was no relocation of the Picts to the lowlands and trustworthy Norman families given their lands - just because it was done without edict. And there was no other reason for certain clans to become "non-persons", just because it wasn't published.Interestingly, he examines Sharkespeare's Macbeth in light of the conflicting Scottish and Pictish cultures to give new insight to the classic. What a buff-job that was, probably to please the court of Elizabeth I.If you want some real insights into the wheres and whyfors of Scottish history, you should start with this book. It will make you think again about your notions of who and where were the Highlanders. Then go on to more modern specifics. But this has a real place in any Albaphile's library.

If reading from works of 19th century authors bothers you, this book is not for you. Also, I'm not sure that the translation into e-book came over as accurate as the book because I had to figure out some of the words. This is one book that I wished that I had bought the printed version as I did not pay attention to the fact that some of the work was disputed in the editor's notes. So, some of the facts that I accepted as true were refuted in the notes. Now I should go back and look at the notes as they apply to specific sections. Not fun! I think the fact that the author took the time to go back to the sagas made his book all the more rich and reliable.

BOOK EXCERPT: ...after a decision had been taken to devalue the Indian rupee, Manmohan Singh had written to Narasimha Rao. He was worried that his personal rupee balance, born out of modest dollar savings, would swell. He informed Rao that the 'windfall' gains would be deposited in the Prime Minister's Relief Fund. 1991 was India s Greece moment . It faced an unprecedented financial crisis against the backdrop of political uncertainty and crumbling investor confidence. On 21 June 1991, P.V. Narasimha Rao became prime minister and appointed Dr Manmohan Singh as finance minister. In less than thirty-five days, the Rao-Singh duo ushered in momentous changes in economic policy those that transformed the country. To the Brink and Back is the first account of the weeks of fast-paced change, narrated by an insider a key aide of the prime minister, uniquely positioned both to participate and observe. It carries brisk accounts of the early days of survival; the compulsions and convictions that propelled a paradigm shift in India's economic policy; and the ups and downs, twists and turns in the saga of fiscal reform. Along with the author s astute insights, the book holds key documents and notes, placed for the first time in the public domain; the personal papers of Narasimha Rao; private conversations with Manmohan Singh; Parliament proceedings; and the minutes of seminal Congress meetings. Coming as it does on the eve of the silver jubilee of India s economic liberalization, To the Brink and Back will appeal not only to political history enthusiasts but also to those who wish to know how countries can be led from the brink to a radically new economic future.

Allam I was always curious about what would happen to the Indian economy between year 1990 and 1995. The country was a mess then with mandal commission agitations, political instability, rising prices etc. to name a few. But as a normal citizen, it was hard to understand what was happening at the top level. This book will answer all those questions. So far I loved it, very clear articulation of events, and the style of Jairam's story telling is excellent. Lot of Macroeconomics in the book (cost-push and demand pull inflation, GDP, debt, capital inflow, capital outflow, deficit (budget and trade), jobs etc). If you know some basic macroeconomics, you will really enjoy the book. After reading few chapters I felt very proud of Late Sri P.V. Narasimha Rao and Dr. Manmohan Singh, who literally saved India from the default. As Mr. Rao was running minority government, any small step he would take, would end up in losing his job. Even though he was aware of it, his priority was to save the country and not protecting his job. BEAUTIFUL.... With addition of Dr. Singh to his minister portfolio, there was no look back and didn't give a damn about his post. If currency had to go devaluation, let's do it and they have done it successfully. An 18% devaluation in three days, fantastic, one will require lot of guts to do it. Stock market loved it, economic pundits and government officials slowly started gaining the trust, and doors were open for foreign investors, capital inflow….Dr. Singh’s first press statement as a finance minister was really courageous, "I don't have any magic wand to bring down the prices, however, if we take right economic steps and policies now, we may see good things in three years from now". As a normal citizen, who has patience to wait that long to see the results? But that is the truth and Mr. Singh had to face lot of criticism for that speech from his minority government. Basically there is no such thing called that government will control the prices or basic economics. As a great economist Adam Smith said back in 1770s - "… one cannot ever regulate economic behavior, it is all about the right incentive systems; it must “pay” to respond in a certain manner..”.After Dr. Singh’s first press meet speech, Congress removed short term election manifest (100, 200, 1000 days) plans.I would highly recommended this book to people with curiosity like me to know what really happened during the days of P.V. Narasimha Rao as Prime Minister. This book is the real answer, well done Jairam Ramesh Sir.

Amazingly JR opened how government functions at highest levels in critical situations . I see this book is more about Leadership than anything else. Every Indian and any one who is into stock market must read this book. Jairam being Congressman in Sonia's age must have some guts to present PV as he see with out fear , I truly appreciated the way JR adherence to facts rather than personifying some in power position , this is truly admiring which takes away bias.I hope this book will be made into a movie . This book would be an amazing addition to all Business Schools list of must read . Book convinced me that Jairam Ramesh must write a unbiased book about congress subsequent government , Genesis and reason for the scams and India's future credibility as a economic power deserving international trust.

The Fox-Hedgehog combine that rescued India in its darkest moment in 1991 By Raghu Nathan January 1991 was the year when India was in acute economic crisis with only about 900 million dollars in foreign exchange reserves. The thumb rule is that the nation must have at least enough reserves to cover three months of import bills whereas India had only enough for a couple of weeks. It was at this time that the new Congress government, a minority government at that, assumed power in New Delhi, with Narasimha Rao as the Prime Minister. Rao was the first ever PM from southern India since India’s independence and it was widely speculated that he would be only a figurehead, with real power being exercised from behind the curtains by the seasoned stalwarts in Congress. This book by Jairam Ramesh, who had a key role in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) during that time, is the story of how Rao, jointly with his Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, overcame the crisis by firmly putting his stamp on what transpired over the next three months in laying the foundations for radically transforming the Indian economy and integrating it with the Globalized world. Ramesh’s academic credentials to write about those three months is beyond question, especially given the ringside seat he occupied in the PMO.Though I knew that India was in a deep crisis in 1991, I had no idea as to what caused it. Was it due to inept management of the economy by the previous governments of Rajiv Gandhi, V.P.Singh and Chandrasekhar? Or was it something more fundamental? Ramesh explains the causes of the crisis in the second chapter itself. Briefly, it was as follows:Reason 1: The first Gulf War of Aug 1990 resulted in trebling of oil prices. War caused India’s exports to Iraq and Kuwait to halt thereby losing $500 million. Further, India had to repatriate thousands of its labor from these countries, affecting their dollar remittances to India.Reason 2: The Mandal Committee recommendations in favor of the Backward Castes in Oct,1990 caused substantial political instability, particularly in northern India, and this caused non-resident Indians to withdraw their deposits from Indian banks to the tune of nearly a billion dollars by Apr-Jun 1991.Reason 3: Inflation rocketed from 6.7% in the mid 80s to 16.7% by Aug 1991 making our exports expensive and non-competitive.Reason 4: India’s short-term external debt had ballooned to $8.5 billion while our foreign exchange reserves, including gold, were just $5.8 billion in March 1991.The subsequent chapters describe the tumultuous three-month period till Aug 1991 as to how Rao’s cabinet swung into action to push through revolutionary reforms in spite of being a minority govt and facing substantial opposition from not only within the Congress party and the Left but from the opposition BJP as well, which paid only lip service to reforms but in reality tried to make political capital out of ‘the Congress party straying away from the Nehruvian legacy’ charge! What fascinated me most was the way Rao and Manmohan Singh enlisted the backing of naysayers within the party, the media and the opposition to push through the reforms by constantly engaging with them and insisting on the national importance of not losing our economic independence by defaulting on our loan payments. Whether it is the devaluation of the rupee or the transfer or sale of Gold reserves, removal of controls in licensing, linking non-essential imports to exports, policy and institutional reforms in accelerating exports, the govt showed its skills in passing them through Parliament in the face of much opposition in favor of the status quo. Funnily, the entire economic reforms program was conceived and executed without the full active participation of the Finance secretary or the Chief economic adviser!Apart from this main story, there are a couple of other interesting anecdotes as well in the book. After the devaluation of the rupee, Dr.Manmohan Singh was worried that his personal rupee balance, borne out of a modest dollar savings from a South Commission stint in Geneva during 1987-90, would swell due to the change in the exchange rate. Therefore he informed the PM that the ‘windfall gains’ would be deposited in the Prime Minister’s relief fund. It is a shame on the present Modi govt in India to insinuate that this man could be corrupt. The other inexplicable thing that Ramesh writes about is the extent to which Narasimha Rao listened to his Guru Chandraswami! Apparently, Chandraswami had convinced Narasimha Rao that India can tide over the immediate financial crisis in 1991 because Chandraswami's buddy, the Sultan of Brunei, had agreed to extend a line of credit to India at the most concessional terms without questions. Rao took it very seriously because he had a plane ready to fly Dr.Singh to Brunei for this! Thankfully, Manmohan Singh managed to convince the PM at the last minute that it would be a foolhardy adventure! Finally, there is much criticism about the Congress Party not giving Narasimha Rao his due during the past decades. One must remember however, that Rao allowed the Babri Masjid to be demolished and this resulted in Congress losing the support of Indian muslims for the past twenty five years. The party hasn’t forgiven him for this yet, it looks, even though this book is some consolation.Ramesh concludes with some well-balanced remarks towards the end. Whether one believes in the Tolstoyan perspective of history that individuals do not matter and only circumstances do or the contrary view that it is individuals who create history, Ramesh says that what got accomplished in June-July 1991 was inevitable if our goal was to avoid the opprobrium of default. The Rao-Singh duo was at the right place at the right time, having neither bargained nor lobbied for the responsibilities they faced. But they seized the day and the rest, as they say, is history! The book is fast-paced and written with an openness and frankness that one does not associate with the Indian political class. Highly recommended.

“I am part of the generation that came of age when Bi Any Other Name was already in print. This groundbreaking anthology gave me the language, courage and sense of community I needed as a young queer woman.” —Daisy Hernández, A Cup of Water Under My Bed The 25th Anniversary Edition Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out first debuted in 1991. This groundbreaking book helped catalyze a national movement for bisexual identity, justice and equality. Often dubbed “the bisexual bible,” Bi Any Other Name was on Lambda Book Review’s Top 100 GLBT Books of the 20th century and became a beloved reference text in many classrooms, doctors’ offices, libraries, and pulpits. A 2007 Mandarin translation was published in Taiwan. The new 2015 introduction of this book updates readers to the enormous changes the past quarter century has brought – for bi people, the larger society and the sexual rights and liberation movement of which we are a part. When did you know? How did you come out? What was your experience? The coming out stories in this book speak to the many ways bisexuals embrace realities outside rigid either/or categories throughout the passage of our lives. Everyday stories of women, men, transgender bisexuals, teenagers to octogenarians, from many different cultures and family arrangements. The fierce truth of these lives made visible puts a check on bisexual erasure, exposing the binary constructions of gay/straight and male/female as oversimplifications that reduce spectrums to mere opposites. Caught between the mainstream culture’s persistent discounting of bisexuality, the sensationalizing characterizations presented in media, and the sexual liberation movement’s continual disregard of bisexuality as a serious identity, bisexual people are often not seen or heard when they speak out. There is a vital need for these earnest voices to be heard in the new century. Enormous cultural changes have occurred in the past 25 years, yes, but understanding bisexualities has just begun.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Still relevant. Still wonderful. By wifie29 I received a free copy via Inked Rainbow Reads in exchange for an honest review. If you are a bisexual (or other multisexual) person or an ally to the bi community, or if you simply want to understand bisexuality better, this book is a necessity for your collection. It is its own self-contained library of information, resources, and personal stories by and about bisexual people. One of the things that struck me is that as a person who has only recently connected with the community, I still found so many way in which the stories resonated. While the world has changed--and new ways of looking at sex and love have emerged--a lot of things have remained the same. The book is divided into sections, each addressing a different aspect of bi life. These are deeply personal stories about relationships and love and navigating the world. Most people will be able to find something in here to relate to.There is no possible way to rate each and every story. Some made me want to stand up and scream, "Yes! This exact thing!" Others didn't resonate with me, and that's all right--it's not because they weren't any good, and I know someone else would be able to relate. In any case, each story was a learning experience for me, being able to read about the lives of these wonderful people. Some readers may be surprised both by places where gender-inclusive language is used to describe attractions and by places where it is not. Be aware going in that there is a wide range of perspectives represented, and no one experience should be used to measure an entire vast community of people. Nor should any one story be used as "proof" of what the bisexual community is or is not.I am simply blown away by the time, effort, and care given to putting this collection together. What a fitting way to celebrate twenty years! Many thanks to all the people who devoted themselves to this project, particularly Lani and Loraine.

This has been such a critically helpful book to so many people. I'm delighted to celebrate the release of a new edition. Great work, as always, Loraine Hutchins and Lani Ka'ahumanu, and the diverse, compelling, beautiful contributors to this wonderful book.

This is as real as it gets. Sheds a light on the humanity of bi-people. Hard to imagine a time where it was so hard to be who you are, but this embodies those times. The book is a little naughty, but what good book isn't including the bible. We all should read books like this that shed light on who people really are,our children, our friends, our lovers and even ourselves. Understand why people explore to find themselves despite society deeming that journey as being unnatural when it is anything but. People with great courage take this journey, people with greater courage write about it. Read the book.Don't take my word for it, look up the Wikipedia on the first book. From Wiki... Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out, an anthology edited by Loraine Hutchins and Lani Ka'ahumanu, is one of the seminal books in the history of the modern bisexual rights movement. It holds a place that is in many ways comparable to that held by Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique in the feminist movement
