Captain Ben Ringsdorf was locked away for six and a half years in the Hanoi Hilton, the most notorious prison camp in the Vietnam War. After he and the rest of his captive soldiers were freed at war’s end, he was greeted with not only a hero’s welcome, but a “ready- made” family. However, even with all of the accolades and love he received, Ben faced physical, mental and emotional challenges just as daunting as his imprisonment, ones that threatened to tear his family apart. While things appear to look bright for the Ringsdorf family, their patriarch soon finds himself haunted by past memories and debilitated by alcoholism and a sense of paranoia, signs of the (at the time) not-yet-diagnosed PTSD. After the Music Stops is Gloria Gayden Corona’s memoir of her promising – yet whirlwind – relationship with the former POW, chronicling their blossoming romance, Ben’s repatriation and desire for a medical career, and his struggle with mental illness.

By Amazon Customer At first glance, I feared Gloria Gayden Corona's book "After the Music Stops" might not have much to teach me. I already knew plenty about families riddled with alcohol and dogged by tragedy. I couldn't have been more wrong. No matter how much we think we know, there is much to be learned from this straightforward account of the author's heartbreaking marriage to a war hero unable to find relief from deep-hidden war wounds that include devastating symptoms of PTSD. Upon his return from six and a half years in a POW prison camp in Vietnam, Ben Ringsdorf met the glamorous and recently divorced Gloria Gayden Hall at the home of their shared friend, Cornelia Wallace, wife of then Alabama Governor George Wallace. The meeting turned into a whirlwind romance amid worldwide travel and many grand occasions celebrating his release along with 115 others at the end of the war. The two settled in Mobile, Alabama, with Gloria's two young children and their newborn daughter and set about making a family together while he studied medicine and established a practice there. Gradually, his alcoholism and the ravages of his war years destroyed the marriage and resulted in his death. We are left, in the end, with a woman's heroic 25-year struggle to save her family and a heartfelt plea for understanding and proper medical care for all veterans particularly those who suffer from PTSD. I hope this book will renew the interest in the lives of the Vienam veterans after the war and how they still suffer. Her husband suffered but so did she and her children. Around us everyday here in San Antonio we see in bold relief the broken bodies here. We see the missing limbs, we can't often see the broken minds and hearts. It is my hope this book will help raise the consciousness of the country and bring pressure on our government to give these men and women and their families the medical and psychological help they need to function in our society once again.

By Amazon Customer Touching insight into what Veterans, and specifically POW's, experienced in trying start a life back in the USA. After the Vietnam War, our society was basically unaware and ill prepared to deal with PTSD. This was an enjoyable and personal story that shines a light on the trials, tribulations and dreams an American Hero and his family. Highly recommend this book!
