The history of South Carolina blues is a long, deep―and sometimes painful―story. However, it is a narrative with aspects as compelling as the music itself. Geographical differences in America led to variations in the styles of music that developed from African rhythms. The wet, marshy landscape and hot, muggy weather of the Carolina Lowcountry combined to cultivate not only rice, but a Gullah-based style of South Carolina blues. In drier climates, toward the Midlands and the Upstate, the combination of European influences led to the emergence of Piedmont blues, which in turn spawned country music as well as bluegrass. Those same Gullah roots resulted in four major dance crazes, starting with the Charleston.

Review "Clair DeLune's photographic research has unearthed some priceless gems, tracing the evolution of blues from its roots in African music and slave life on Southern plantations to the biracial blues festivals, concerts and jams held all over South Carolina these days. Incisive and detailed annotations bring the story to life. A lot of unsung heroes are given their due, and the SC roots of various figures I'd never realized were from the state - including Rev. Gary Davis, Clara Smith, Josh White, Eartha Kitt, J.B. Hutto, and two legendary Browns (Nappy and James) - are brought to light. Even Chubby Checker was born in the Palmetto State! (Who knew?) A wonderful book to browse at your leisure or read intently from cover to cover." Parke Puterbaugh, writer/historian at the R&R Hall of Fame, author, Rolling Stone editor and History of Rock & Roll professor at Guilford College

About the Author In this book, music history professor and blues radio host Clair DeLune dusts off neglected nuggets of history, drawing on archival photographs and rarely seen memorabilia from a generation of musicians’ personal collections. Readers will learn not only new information about some famous players who left their musical mark on history, but even more about the not-so-famous ones, as well as modern masters who carry on the rhythms of their predecessors and are truly keeping South Carolina blues alive.

By LAURENCE H BEALL I know the author and expected a book that would be well written and informative but I had no idea what a stellar, insightful and majestic work of art this would turn out to be. The photos are very special, (some are mind blowing), and the connecting links between the various styles and artists are well delineated. I finished reading it a couple hours ago and I'm still smiling. Just fabulous!

Through her decades of research, her attention to detail and her understated wit, Ms. DeLune brings to life the sometimes tragic origins but ultimately triumphant history of Piedmont blues music that has enriched, and continues to enrich the lives of so many. Ms. DeLune has gifted readers with insightful commentary and rarely seen photographs of the musicians, both the pioneers who created South Carolina blues music in the early days, and the modern performers who continue to steward the genre, and she provides readers with pictures of the towns, plantations and ballrooms that gave meaning and context to the music. She also discusses the famous dances (the Big Apple, the Charleston, the shag) that were created by South Carolina blues performers. The book is at once entertaining and enlightening, and many of the lost stories behind the performers and their music have now been told. Thank you, Ms. DeLune, for your fine history of South Carolina blues!

It is well researched, written in a lucid and informative style and packed with amazing archival photos on every page. A musicologist and a Blues disc jockey, Ms. DeLune has provided an enthralling look at the early roots of Blues and the development into the sublime musical style we see and hear today. It should be of interest to the serious Blues listener as well as those who only are aware of the most famous names. I read it in one sitting as it was impossible to put it down- too much fascinating information and too many amazing photos. I learned much that I did not know about the S.C Blues scene and was surprised by the number of times that I thought I knew an artist so well but was unaware of their S.C. connections. If you have an interest in South Carolina Blues or just the Blues in general, this is a book that you will find extremely informative and enjoyable.
