Excerpt from The Romance of Davis Mountains and Big Bend Country: A HistoryI claim no literary merit for this work. Its very nature, wherein truth of statements is of the first importance, precludes the possibility' of artistic writing. In gathering my data I have attempted to eliminate the personal viewpoint of the narrator, as well as of myself. I have used much material as it was given to me, simply because I feel that the original expresses more clearly than I could express the subject dealt with.I have tried to produce a work that will be of value to my readers. This book has been written under varying and trying circumstances. It has taken me two and a half years to compile my data and write the manuscript. During that time I traveled 57,000 miles in a car, over good roads and bad and in all sorts of weather. My work has been interrupted by both sickness and sorrow, and very often my feet have wavered from the path I had chosen for them to tread. Still, I feel that I have done my best and that there are many who will appreciate this work. For those I am writing this introduction. It is impossible to name separately the sources from which I have drawn my material, and I must rest content to express my appreciation collectively to the hundreds who have contributed their knowledge to this book. The cover design was drawn by Mr. Waldo Williams, who, like myself,.is a native of the Southwest. To him and his father, Judge O. W. Williams, I owe much material and many suggestions. I further wish to thank for assistance rendered and data given, Mr. Barry Scobee, Capt. J. B. Gillett, Capt. John R. Hughes, Col. Geo. T. Langhome, Mrs. Julia Lee Brown, Lieut H. O. Flipper, and C. E. Way.In this work I have tried to convey something of the real West as it was and as it is. I have before me a letter from an old pioneer, which breathes the spirit of the West. He says - "The West? There is no more West.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 7,000,000,000 people on this planet would like to find a buried treasure on their property. ..........................................IT HAPPENED TO ME!...................................................... My life was at risk on a daily basis for five years. During the summer and fall I spent nearly every day digging exploratory holes and then tunnels as deep as 36 feet below ground in my own backyard using a mini jackhammer and a variety of shovels and wrecking bars. I escaped numerous deadly tricks designed to prevent anybody but Drake from recovering the treasure. These included flooding tunnels, collapsing rooms triggered by pressure sensitive stones, sand and quicksand tricks designed to trap and suffocate and a false ceiling waiting to crush any unsuspecting treasure hunter. .There is a reason that pictures of Pirate Treasure are always surrounded by skeletons! . During the winter and spring months, I read everything I could find about Sir Francis Drake, the Miwok Indians and technologies that Drake learned about over the course of a lifetime at sea. A history buff, citizen-scientist, daredevil and lover of the high seas from an early age, Robert L. Stupack also prided himself on his skill with numbers. After graduating from Penn State in 1978, he began a profitable career in the financial sector where he worked for such prestigious firms as Price Waterhouse and Smith Barney After spending a year and a half as a trainee on the Bond Trading Desk in Manhattan, he moved to San Francisco where he serviced small and medium sized banks throughout the western US. As luck would have it, he was in Manhattan on Black Friday, October 16, 1987, when his 100+ year-old firm went bankrupt overnight, as depicted in the famous scene from the movie, The Wolf of Wall Street. At age 30 Stupack bought a house on scenic Greenbrae Ridge in Marin County and was thriving in his chosen profession, though soon thereafter he began to feel somewhat restless. At age 44, his life changed radically when he discovered evidence that Sir Francis Drake might have buried plundered treasure under the very property he owned.

By Eyor This book is a fascinating story of the author's obsessive search for the treasure and brass plate of Sir Francis Drake. As he shares his extreme experiences over many years, he makes us wonder whether he is crazy or does he have the unique sense and imagination needed to make discoveries that have evaded others? Interspersed with the author's personal story is the historical fiction account of Sir Francis Drake and his journey across the oceans to the California Coast. The author's intelligence shines through in his mathematical explanation of how his birthday relates to Sir Francis Drake's date of death, which for me would have taken some more studying to understand, but that did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. Screenwriters and producers take note - there is no doubt this story could be turned into a great movie: based on a true story with the added advantage of the exciting history of Sir Francis Drake - sounds like a winner to me!

Sir Francis Drake, a new take on his plundering voyages By Amazon Customer I started reading this book under the title of "Extreme Measurements" It was loosely described as a story related to Sir Francis Drake's buried treasure and I am fascinate with these stories. The author then describes his toiling over the next few years digging numerous tunnels under his property which was located on the north part of San Francisco Bay. Historically, there were writings that did tell of Drake sailing as a Privateer under the flag of Queen Elizabeth I and of his plundering/looting/stealing vast quantities of Gold Artifacts, Silver artifacts and many precious stones. The author then finds several small stones in his lawn which inspires him to start looking up history and then excavating his property. At first it was part time but then it became a full-time obsession to find the "Treasure". He did find a number of interesting things including a mud slurry that had a very high Silver content, a lot of white stones which did contain a few Diamonds and several areas which did contain toxic elements in the fill possibly put there to discourage treasure hunters. Unfortunately, the excavations were halted by rulings from the Town against the type he was doing, he lost the property because of money problems and the whole area was turned into a Park and the whole area was bulldozed into a comp-lately flat area. The Author does not elaborate how this all happened but did gloss over this part in a page or two. However, there is another very interesting part to this yarn related to Mathematics, Cartography, time and date measurement, the different Calendars in use throughout history and the different ways of measuring time, whether it be Lunar, Sun or Celestial; or the new Atomic Clock which of course all are a bit different. It is obvious that the author had to do a lot of research and learning to be able to do all of the calculations needed for the conclusions that he does eventual draw. In a personal conversation, the author did state that he was going to retitle the book and rewrite the final chapter before it was published under the new title. I am very interested in math and science and was very intrigued by this book and will eventually reread it in the revised form. I received this book in exchange for a review. wrp

While I wasn't sure what to expect from this story, I was pleasantly surprised in the unfolding story. The author takes us on a journey from a full-time job and part-time treasure hunter to the opposite as his discoveries mount... and eventually, he has the means to be a full-time treasure hunter. He faces many obstacles to his search, but he never gives up totally!Mr Stupack shows us how he pieces the puzzle together to go to the next step, and he intersperses his adventure with Drake's story as well. There are different calculations he must solve to make certain he is on the right trail. Even with bouts of poisoning from his digging, he still comes back to keep going. Neighbors, family, and other "adversaries" try to stop him from his quest - yet, he prevails in the search. The author is honest in admitting his other activities, and he sounds very tenacious in reaching his goals... It makes an interesting read!I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. If you like reading about people who go on their own adventure... in their own back yard!... you will enjoy this story!

Mexico and the United States may be neighbors, but their economies offer stark contrasts. In Mexico’s Uneven Development: The Geographical and Historical Context of Inequality, Oscar J. Martínez explores Mexico’s history to explain why Mexico remains less developed than the United States. Weaving in stories from his own experiences growing up along the U.S.-Mexico border, Martínez shows how the foundational factors of external relations, the natural environment, the structures of production and governance, natural resources, and population dynamics have all played roles in shaping the Mexican economy. This interesting and thought-provoking study clearly and convincingly explains the issues that affect Mexico's underdevelopment. It will prove invaluable to anyone studying Mexico’s past or interested in its future.

It’s refreshing to have someone put the hot buttons of immigration and drug cartels into their proper context and read a broader work that examines, in detail, the factors that helped and impeded Mexico’s economic development along the course of its long history. The author carefully, and convincingly, explains why their geography, demography, international relations and governance made Mexican and U.S. development so radically different. This work will become a standard text, required reading for those studying Mexico, but it is also a very readable, informative and enjoyable book for non-academics, like me. Raymond Caballero

It is due in large part to Martinez' decision to illuminate the challenges that Mexico had by contrasting them with the United States. Issues such as; the economy, difficult geography/climate, shortage of waterways. population dynamics, and external relations, which were compared case by case with the good fortune of the United States. These "foundational factors" catapulted the United States to superpower status while Mexico was limited by theirs. Martinez' fluid and engaging writing style is insightful and his personal anecdotes about his lived experiences on both sides of the border add a credible perspective. As a Mexican-American I appreciated that Martinez debunks the narrative of Mexico's inferior culture and/or character with facts and science. It is invigorating to be liberated of those long-held mischaracterizations and stereotypes. Professor Martinez' book should be required reading for enlightening scholars on either side of the border. .

By Susan Gray Kisler This book makes a convincing case that in order to understand Mexico's problems, one must understand the root causes of the country's poverty. Mr. Martinez unravels this complex subject by artfully examining the powerful forces that have constrained Mexico's economy. I was surprised how readable the prose is!

Contrary to popular notion (and the citys street and welcome signs, which feature an iconic rose bloom), Roseville is not named after the flower but after Denison Rose, a hero of the War of 1812. His son William Rose was named the first postmaster in 1836. Roseville incorporated as a village in 1926 and as a city in 1958. Known as a bedroom community because of its location halfway between Detroit and Mount Clemens, the city reached its maximum population in 1970. Today, Roseville is experiencing a major commercial boom that includes a renovation of Macomb Mall, one of the first malls in the country.

Volume Three of Ventura County Veterans’ Stories was created to help people understand what it means to serve our nation as a member of the Armed Forces. This book was not designed to glorify war or the individuals, nor famous generals or battle strategies, but the average G.I. experience from World War II to the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Great care was taken to ensure the accuracy of each story and to relate the individual’s experiences with the real history at the time they served. Whether the individuals served in actual combat is not an issue since every veteran is subject to the hazards of war and dangers inherent in all military service. Each individual story tells the roots of the service person’s actual experiences during service, followed by post-service life and accomplishments—stories of ordinary people living through extraordinary times. Reviews from the first two volumes of Veteran Stories… “Heart-wrenching, poignant war memories from disappearing voices. A remarkable book!” — Dr. Joyce Kennedy, PH.D, Cal State Northridge “An amazing collection of personal experiences by the soldiers, sailors and airmen who were doing the dirty work. America’s true heroes.” — Brigadier General Anthony Volante, California National Guard (Ret.) “If Americans ever forget the horrors and deprivations of wars past, we are destined to repeat them. These neighbors, living right here in our area, have wrenching stories of war experienced all over the world.” — Former congressman Robert Lagomarsino, past State Assemblyman and Mayor of Ojai, CA.

Arthur James Balfour (1848-1930) was born toward the beginning of Queen Victoria's long reign. At her death in 1901, he was a year away from becoming the first prime minister of the Edwardian era. In the quarter century after his entry into political life in the 1870s, Britain experienced material changes and a sense of intensifying human interactions as dramatic to his generation as the forces of globalization are today. Aristocrats watched anxiously as gifted boys from the middle classes rose to the top in professional life. Culture wars over male and female behaviours erupted at home, as small wars of empire proliferated overseas. Politicians came to terms with electioneering among the masses and with a boisterous print culture that prefigured the mass media of the next century. The first great era of advanced, international capitalism affected every segment of British and imperial society, including therarefied domain of Arthur Balfour. That changes of the magnitude that Balfour's generation faced would demand different skills, career paths or political alignments is not surprising. That they might also result in thecreation of different emotional sets and interior worlds may be more so. Balfour's World provides an intimate history of how Arthur and his friends - George Herbert, 13th Earl of Pembroke; Laura and Margot (later Lady Asquith) Tennant; Mary and George Wyndham - helped to construct a new 'emotional regime' among Britain's political elites at the fin de siècle. The rich diaries, letters and publications they left allow access both to public selves and to inner landscapes, and the mix of psychological patterns and cultural assumptions that mediated their responses to the world. As the new century began, the demeanours modelled by habitués of Balfour's world would characterizemany in the imperial elite, marking them as a clear bridge between the Victorians and the moderns in Britain's twentieth-century political culture.

Balfour's World, by Nancy W. Ellenberger

Review "Professor Ellenberger's study of Arthur Balfour and his place in the political and social world of late Victorian Britain is marked by scrupulous research into the archives of the times and also by an incisive reading of recent critical and theoretical work. Elegantly and gracefully written, the book exposes Balfour's world with its complicated-sometimes louche-elements in new and important ways." William C. Lubenow "Nancy Ellenberger offers the most comprehensive account yet of the fin de siècle aristocratic milieu of Arthur Balfour and those relatives and friends of both sexes who together were known as 'The Souls'. She explores these networks of political, social and sexual connection with great skill, subtlety and sophistication, and she is the first historian to give as much (and much-needed) attention to their private as to their public lives. The result is a fascinating and revealing book, which is a major contribution to the political, social and cultural history of late nineteenth-century Britain." David Cannadine

About the Author NANCY W. ELLENBERGER is Professor of History at the United States NavalAcademy, Annapolis.

Democracy and Constitutional Politics in Iran: A Weberian Analysis, by Farshad Malek-Ahmadi

Review

"If you ever wondered why a century past her Constitutional Revolution of 1905-1911 Iran is still struggling to establish a democratic order and sustainable constitutional politics, you should read Malek-Ahmadi's account of the contestation of liberal and authoritarian interpretations of the law and religion among Iranian political elites, especially as it has manifested itself in the rule of the Islamic Republic in Iran." - Ali Akbar Mahdi, Ali Akbar Mahdi, Lecturer in Sociology, California State University, College of the Canyons, USA

"A careful and sophisticated account of Iran's bumpy road to democratization in historical perspective and cast in an analytical framework drawn from Max Weber. Malek-Ahmadi presents Iran's unique constitutional experience in a new light." - Said Amir Arjomand, Distinguished Service Professor of Sociology, State University of New York, Stony Brook, USA

"Farshad Malek-Ahmadi captures the tension between democratic and autocratic tendencies in Iranian politics and the power wielded by Shiite clerics over government policies that long predates the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Iran's ultimate modernization, he suggests, depends on a separation of mosque and state that may take another generation or more to achieve." - Barbara Slavin, Author of Bitter Friends, Bosom Enemies: Iran, the U.S., and the Twisted Path to Confrontation (2009)

"Relying on Max Weber's discussion of different types of authority, Farshad Malek-Ahmadi deftly lays out the interplay of the historical yearning for constitutionalism in Iran and the repeated hurdles to this quest for representation and rule of law. Despite delineation of repeated institutional failures, Malek-Ahmadi's conclusion about the strength of the yearning for constitutionalism is both refreshing and hopeful." - Farideh Farhi, Independent Scholar and Affiliate Graduate Faculty at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, USA

"The history of twentieth-century Iran is bracketed by two experiments in constitutional design, the Constitutional Revolution of 1906-1907 and the Islamic Republic, which was established in 1979. Farshad Malek-Ahmadi's erudite book contrasts these episodes and explores their implications for the ongoing tension between clerical authorities and the emerging modern state in Iran, using the classic conceptual framework of the great German sociologist Max Weber." - Charles Kurzman, Professor of Sociology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA

About the Author Farshad Malek-Ahmadi received his PhD in Sociology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1999. Since 2004, he has been teaching at Naugatuck Valley Community College, USA. For twenty years, he has taught sociology classes at academic institutions both in the United States and abroad. His research interests are in the areas of politics, law, and literature.

This book is a comprehensive analysis of the movement of Iran toward democracy and constitutionalism in the context of its recent history since the conquest of state by the Safavid Empire. In doing so, the author has used a language that is both simple enough to be appreciated by all audiences and scientific to be valuable to scholars and researchers of Iran. Moreover, significant issues such as prospects for democratization, the important role women have played in this great effort, and a social-historical analysis that takes into account the failures of both the Constitutional Movement of a century ago as well as the present reform movement, have been given their due consideration. This book is a valuable addition to the sociopolitical literature on Iran.

A History of Modern Oman, by Jeremy Jones, Nicholas Ridout

Review "This book weaves a deep understanding of Oman's history, politics, economics, religion and, very importantly, culture in a way that is particularly useful in understanding the challenges Oman faces today. A must-read for anyone interested in Oman or an understanding of religion and culture in affecting foreign affairs." Stephen W. Buck, former US Foreign Service officer, Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d'Affaires, Muscat (1979-83)"This book offers an excellent history and analysis of Oman from the eighteenth century to the present. Based on personal knowledge acquired over several decades, as well as a comprehensive command of the literature in the field, it offers measured judgements of the Sultanate's present and future of which all interested in Oman should be aware." Francis Robinson, Royal Holloway, University of London"A History of Modern Oman is an impressive portrait of a society that has taken a different road from its Arab neighbors. This is a profound examination of the transition within two generations of a country from its tribal roots to a modern and tolerant society based on consensus and acceptance rather than dictation." Edward Walker, Hamilton College, New York

About the Author Jeremy Jones has an Oxford-based consulting business and has worked on Oman since the 1980s. His first book Negotiating Change: The New Politics of the Middle East anticipated the Arab Spring.Nicholas Ridout is the only professor of theatre who also writes and researches extensively on the history and politics of the Middle East. Take a trip back in time and stroll the same streets as Scranton’s pioneers. The coal mining town was at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution with the birth of the Iron Furnaces in the 1840’s and the manufacturing of T-Rails.

“If you can play Scranton, you can play anywhere”, originated here during the Vaudeville Era and the “Electric City” shined bright in the 1930’s when its population soared with people from all walks of life.

Adding to the city’s rich history and beautiful architecture is the popularity it has received in recent years, for being the fictional setting of Dunder and Mifflin, The Office television series, as the saying goes “Ain’t no party, like a Scranton party”.

Providence, Hyde Park, and Scranton Proper were organized by a special charter and incorporated as the city of Scranton on April 23, 1866. Celebrate with the city as it approaches its 150th Birthday!

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. appreciating george ade By mad at I pod The first thing you have to tackle with this book is the title, since these stories are not fables and there is little "slang". Ade was not a fantasist. These are very short, realistic, and sometimes very funny stories. He called them fables because they all have a moral, but the moral is ironic, meant to underline the hypocracy and narrow vision of small town mid-west America in the turn of the Century (19th-20th Century). By slang he meant these are stories in the vernacular, written in a conversational tone. Ade was a Drieser in miniature, and one of our best humorists, and his fans included Edmund Wilson and fellow Hoosier Jean Shephard (another underappreciated humorist, remembered for the film The Christmas Story).

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. That's Slang?! I Never Knew. By Scarlet Ibis This book is WEIRD. It's weird mostly because it's SOOOOO dated that it's hard to understand it.It is composed of many fables (that you've never heard) written in slang... But it's slang from THEN, not now. A lot of the "slang" has become common language now, so it doesn't seem like slang at all. However, some of the slang is so unusual that it's hard to figure out what Mr. Ade is talking about.I love this book. I bought it for about [price] in an antique shop many years ago and have loved it ever since. There is one fable called The Fool Killer (or something to that effect... I don't have it here in front of me) that really resonates with me. It pokes fun of people who make themselves miserable in order to endure a day of "fun".If you're the type of person who likes to collect weird old books, this is the book for you.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Lots of Short Stories By R. Song Note: I downloaded this free from the Gutenberg Project rather than Amazon, so there may be a few differences between this version and the one I have. This was written in 1899 and the English has not been updated. Once you get used to the style though, the stories become amusing. They seem more like accounts of people learning life's lessons rather than fables. Some are funny, some are sad and a few I didn't get. As I read them, I realize even though much has changed between 1899 and today, people are much the same. Many of us make the same dumb mistakes as our ancestors did: trusting those we shouldn't, expecting too much or too little, etc. The illustrations are also cool.

Free Ebook Sheridan: A History of the American Light Tank, Volume 2, by R.P. Hunnicutt

This installation in R. P. Huunnicutt's legendary 10-volume history of American tanks and armored vehicles provides a detailed survey of the American light tank's developmental history, culminating with the M551 Sheridan AR/AAV and the vehicles based on its design. In the period directly after WWII, the Army became interested in developing a light tank. Hunnicutt begins by detailing the program that eventually produced the M41 series of 76mm gun tanks that were designed to fulfill this interest. At 25 tons, the M4 was considered to be too heavy in spite of its popularity with the troops that operated it.

Programs developed in an effort to produce a lighter-weight tank resulted in the T71 and T92 tanks, both of which retained the 76mm gun and weighed in at about 17 tons. However, once it was discovered that Soviet tanks of the same caliber were amphibious, the T92 was scrapped to redirect design efforts to an amphibious light tank. This new program produced the XM551 Sheridan, no longer designated as a tank but rather as an "armored reconnaissance/airborne assault vehicle", or AR/AAV for short.

An extremely complex design, the M551 Sheridan AR/AAV was plagued by problems with its weapons system in its early stages. The vehicle required a great deal of frequent maintenance which made it unpopular with troops regardless of the fact that it provided a wide range of services. It was phased out of service in the late 1970s. Part III of this book covers the development of a future replacement for the Sheridan. Part IV covers several other light tracked combat vehicles.

Boasting dozens of detailed illustrations, line drawings and photographs, as well as the depth, precision, and nuance for which R. P. Hunnicutt's books are renowned, Sheridan: A History of the American Light Tank is a must-have for anyone with a keen interest in American military history.

By A Customer As a Vietnam-era US cavalry officer who commanded a Sheridan unit, I am all too familar with the operational problems during the M551's service life (ammunition, drive train, and missile system). It was a bear to keep the Sheridan going, but if we had gone to war, it was all we had in The Cav. I think Mr. Hunnicutt has done a very admirable job in detailing how this country went from an excellent recon tank (the M-41) to the miserable Sheridan. Let future generations of soldiers learn from the mistakes of my generation.P.S. This book is very heavy on detail - only those who love the smell of diesel and creaking tracks will totally comprehend the work that went into completing this research masterpiece.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. M-551 Sheridan and more By matt8386 Author R.P. Hunnicutt gives you more than just the M-551 Sheridan. In this book, he also traces the history of US Light Armor since WW2 to 1995. Included in the first 76 pages are complete studies of the M-41 Walker Bulldog, Light tank design concepts of the 1950's (very interesting to see all of the different ideas Detroit and the Army considered), engines, cannon, the T-95.The next sections address the M-551 prototype, the testing, development and production of the Sheridan. This was a tank that tried to be everything for every one - light enough for airborne support, with a 152mm cannon/missile launcher for anti tank work, a scout vehicle. Regardless of your opinion of the tank itself, this is a fantastic collection of line drawings, cut aways; black and white photographs abound throughout the entire book. There are chapters covering the newer light tanks such as the Stingray, the M-8, the M-56, the M-50 Ontos and M-109 SPG. 8 pages of color photos and vehicle data/statistics finish up the book.To get so much information into one book is exceptional. This is for serious armor fans and a real treat. A worthy collection to your library, it covers so much about so many different vehicles, all well done.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Another Masterpiece By History Nut What can anyone say? It is a Hunnicut book so it is the best. It has good coverage of the M41 and T92 predecessors which are of interest to me. It is sad that the book ends with the assumption that the M8 Armored Gun System will replace the M551. I don't think anyone anticipated that our 'leaders' would leave our Airborne Forces without a replacement AFV. There is some coverage of SP Artillery and some odds and ends that almost seem like a 'catch all' of things not included in other books of his work. This book is a must have for those that enjoy the "details".

Excerpt from Plutarch's Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans: With an Introduction by George WyndamI have reason (as I thinke) to compare Nicias with Crassus, and the events that happened to the one in Parthia, with those that befell the other in Sicyle: yet am I to pray them that shall happen to read my wrytinges, not to thinke me in entermeddling with those matters (in the describing and reporting whereof, Thucydides hath gone beyond him selfe, both for variety and livelines of narration, as also in choice and excellent words) to have the like intent and opinion, that Timæus the historiographer had. Who, hoping by the gravety and life of his words and reportes, to darken the glorie of Thucydides, and make Philistus (in comparison of him selfe) appeare ignoraunt, and without any grace of historicall narration: hath in his history of purpose sought occasion to enter into the describing of those battels by sea and by land, and the reporte of those speches and orations, which are delivered by them with great judgement and eloquence. Wherein he commeth as neere them whome he contendes to passe, as doth the footeman to the Lydian coche, as sayth Pindarus: and besides sheweth him selfe fond and of small judgement, or as Diphilus sayth,A lubber laden with Sicylian grease. And in divers places, he falleth into Xenarchus follies.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. We had ordered this for our homeschool curriculum which spans the entire work of North's translation of Plutarch's Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans. I will be returning this book and ordering a different edition, probably the older 1950's copy of North's translation.

This recently discovered memoir gives an intimate glimpse into the Great War service of Beatrice Hopkinson, a Territorial Forces Nursing Service Sister, who remained steadfastly and true to her profession as she nursed through shot and shell. Dr Vivien Newman's meticulously researched Introduction brings Beatrice's world out of the shadows, juxtaposing her war service against the background of the Army Nursing Service, where dedicated, professional nurses worked closer to the Front Line than women could have ever previously imagined doing. Beatrice was selected for the most onerous type of duty in the bitterest phase of the war. She had arrived in St Omer in the summer of 1917 when the town was being continuously bombed. With her hospital under nightly attack, Beatrice simply got on with the job she had come to France to do: saving the lives and easing the dying of soldiers on the Western Front. For Beatrice, spring 1918 was marked by a 'sea of blood'. Caught up in the British Army's headlong retreat when hospitals and patients risked being captured by the enemy, she and her 'rapid response' team were rushed between several Casualty Clearing Stations in France and Belgium. They operated on thousands of soldiers wounded in Germany's final attempt to win the War. As the fortunes of war finally turned in the Allies' favour, Beatrice advanced through Belgium, a land destroyed by war and enemy occupation. This diary gives rare insight into the realities of Front Line nursing through the eyes of someone who had never anticipated working for the Army but who, when her country called, willingly and steadfastly answered.

The Appalachian people are a dying breed, this is their stories and their lives that are quickly being invaded by technology and the world creeping into the backwoods of the mountains. Much like the Indians of the past, their world is quickly changing as they too will become an extinct species.
