About the Author About the Author Danny Shaw teaches Latin American and Caribbean Studies and Race, Ethnicity, Class and Gender at the City University of New York. He holds a Masters in International Affairs from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He was born and raised by a single mother in Brockton, Massachusetts and has lived in the Bronx for the past 18 years. He is fluent in Spanish, Haitian Kreyol, Portuguese, Cape Verdean Kreolu and has a fair command of French. He has worked and organized in forty different countries, opening his spirit to countless testimonies about the inhumanity of the international economic system. He is a Golden Gloves boxer, fighting twice in Madison Square Garden for the NYC heavyweight championship. He teaches boxing, yoga and nutrition. He works in the national leadership of the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) to keep young people out of the military and prison industrial complex. He is a mentor to many guiding them through the nutritional, ideological, social and emotional landmines that surround us. He is the father of two young Life Warriors, Ernesto Rafael and Caua Amaru. Chaplain Hyde wrote in great detail, sharing his excellent observations with his wife and others. This book offers a unique perspective - from the point of view of neither a general nor a private, but from a participant whose role in the regiment provided him a ringside seat at events, both interpersonal and historical. This adds much to the body of period Civil War writings, particularly as regards the true human element that is so often overlooked, except in classics such as "Hardtack and Coffee" and "Company Aytch", among other less familiar but equally worthy titles. This book should take it's well-deserved place in that company.

The infamous KGB of Cold War renown was the successor to a series of equally lethal state security agencies that date from the early days of the Russian Revolution: the Cheka, OGPU, NKVD and MVD. Stalin’s Secret Police begins by describing the harsh state security used by the despotic Tsars from the time of Ivan the Terrible. The author then examines the Cheka, the first post-revolutionary organization charged with combating counter-revolution, whose methods were so ruthless that the early Bolshevik government abolished the organization in 1922. After taking control of the Communist Party in 1923, Stalin used the newly formed OGPU to implement mass deportations of the kulaks (wealthy peasants). Stalin’s Secret Police then charts Stalin’s use of the renamed NKVD to carry out the purges of the 1930s, where most of the Soviet dictator’s political rivals were prosecuted in notorious ‘show trials’: millions were arrested and ended their lives in Gulags (forced-labor camps), while countless others were executed. But this was not the end of secret police terror: after World War II, many thousands of Cossacks and White Russians who had fought for the Nazis faced a similar fate. Following the death of Stalin in 1953, the final incarnation of the Soviet secret police, the KGB, became an agency for spreading Soviet influence throughout the world. Illustrated with 120 photographs, Stalin’s Secret Police is a lively and accessible history of secret police oppression in the Soviet Union from 1917 to the early 1990s.REVIEWS I found the writing style concise and easy to read. Geschke Being a member of the Military Writers Society of America, I always look forward to the MWSA annual anthology publication. This year’s title is titled Hope and Courage. The stories contained herein are based on the theme of hope and courage. As always this group of military writers brings forward an electrical series of short stories which are meant to show hope and the courage which were observed and lived by these writers. If you don’t watch out you will be mesmerized and highly entertained by these writing members of MWSA. Do yourself a favor and order this anthology, you won’t regret it.

By LAURENCE H BEALL I know the author and expected a book that would be well written and informative but I had no idea what a stellar, insightful and majestic work of art this would turn out to be. The photos are very special, (some are mind blowing), and the connecting links between the various styles and artists are well delineated. I finished reading it a couple hours ago and I'm still smiling. Just fabulous!

Through her decades of research, her attention to detail and her understated wit, Ms. DeLune brings to life the sometimes tragic origins but ultimately triumphant history of Piedmont blues music that has enriched, and continues to enrich the lives of so many. Ms. DeLune has gifted readers with insightful commentary and rarely seen photographs of the musicians, both the pioneers who created South Carolina blues music in the early days, and the modern performers who continue to steward the genre, and she provides readers with pictures of the towns, plantations and ballrooms that gave meaning and context to the music. She also discusses the famous dances (the Big Apple, the Charleston, the shag) that were created by South Carolina blues performers.The book is at once entertaining and enlightening, and many of the lost stories behind the performers and their music have now been told. Thank you, Ms. DeLune, for your fine history of South Carolina blues!

It is well researched, written in a lucid and informative style and packed with amazing archival photos on every page. A musicologist and a Blues disc jockey, Ms. DeLune has provided an enthralling look at the early roots of Blues and the development into the sublime musical style we see and hear today. It should be of interest to the serious Blues listener as well as those who only are aware of the most famous names. I read it in one sitting as it was impossible to put it down- too much fascinating information and too many amazing photos. I learned much that I did not know about the S.C Blues scene and was surprised by the number of times that I thought I knew an artist so well but was unaware of their S.C. connections. If you have an interest in South Carolina Blues or just the Blues in general, this is a book that you will find extremely informative and enjoyable.

Woodley Herzen is one of the classic biographers of mid nineteenth century men of letters. Brought up as Russian he was actually the son of a Russian nobleman and a german girl only 17. Herzen's parents eloped when she was just 16 and married out of the Russian Rites thus putting Herzen's position in society in an odd kind of limbo as he never received his father's name as such even though he was brought up as his son.Herzen later went on to be an obsessive wandered, exiled from Russia for his political views. He roamed Europe until dying at the relatively young age of 58.This book, the first two parts of his memoirs is a detailed, well written memoir of his early life, but includes comentary on the state of Russia and Russian politics of the time. I would highly recommend it to those interested in European life in the eighteenth and nineteenth century, his anecdotal tales and explanations of the serf system clarifies the complex situation of Russian politics.He was still a young baby when Napoleon reached the gates of Moscow as his father and uncle had delayed leaving (1812) and so the first few weeks were spent in semi-captivity, unable to escape Moscow, and trapped despite fire and marauding. Luckily his father was able to gain support from one of Napoleon's generals which protected his family until he was granted safe passage to deliver a message to the Russian tsar, Alexander 1. This story was told to Herzen in later childhood by his nurse who had been with him in the early days.This book really needs much better footnotes and explanatory introduction. The names and relationships of the people in her, or their history, are not obvious to non-readers of Russian history and would be very helpful in the long run.It is still a very compelling book without this, Herzen is an excellent writer and it was an enjoyable read.
