6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Excellent book By Paul Woodadge It's hard to get the balance right with some of these combined history and guide book type titles. Either there can be not enough maps and photos to explain the action, or there is not enough "history" amongst the maps and photos.Here however, the author has done a great job getting the balance right. The text is easy to follow and draws from a wide-range of excellent primary source accounts and portions of many dozens of long out print regimental histories. The various actions of Epsom are explained down to Company and Troop level on an almost hour to hour basis, and both the British and German movements are clearly explained.However it is in the use of aerial photos that the book comes into it's own. At no point in the book are you left not knowing where you are geographically speaking. You can follow the action hedgerow by hedgerow from the air, and both original and modern comparison photos show you where the actions took place. Whether you want to chart the battle from the comfort of your living room or by driving around the Norman countryside this book takes you through the battle step by step.

By History lover Surprising enough not many books are written on Operation Epsom, and this one is certainly one of the most informative. Excellent maps, interesting witness accounts, thorough background information, some small errors, but minor and not annoying, if you want to learn something about how it was, read this book. AND best of all, superb aerial pictures, which provide the reader with great insight about what went on, and the tactics used. I'm amazed to be the first reviewer of this excellent book. Mr. Daglish is one of the best authors on Normandy, and I hope to see many more books like this from this author. He knows the subject well, and makes you feel like being there. Well done!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Nice approach By rgrunt Just finished the book. First Title of this series that I've read, and I'm happy with it. Far from the books on WW2 that I started reading 35 years ago or so, with one or two sketch maps and a few generic but interesting photos that my or may not have anything to do with the actual event, this was refreshing. Although it was sometimes a bit of work to relate one map or photo from one page to another on another page of actions in adjacent sectors and whatnot, you get a much better feel for what actually happened in this style of format. I also like that the author has done his homework enough and is objective enough to point out that you can't judge from hindsight what actions the combatants took, and gives circumstances that happened that influenced their decisions. Far from the all-knowing armchair general approach that some authors inflict on the combatants. Very refreshing.

The author thoroughly explores the "rest of the story" of these veterans, and the narrative is very detailed and informative. It was easy to find myself immersed in the stories of each veteran's struggles and experiences. While both uplifting and realistically poignant, the author's clear command of these heroes' experiences illustrates perfectly this dwindling generation of heroes who, almost to a person, took great pains to NOT be considered heroes. Nice to see some local ties to the Northwest in these stories, with plenty of local history and detail. Well done.

I had put together a presentation but was still not comfortable with unresolved issues. My talk was Saturday afternoon, but when I went to the keynote lecture that morning, the lack of peace was stronger than ever. As I sat there praying about it, the Holy Spirit brought to my mind Jeremiah 4:14, a passage God had given me years ago in my homeschooling activism. But as I turned to it and read the verses, suddenly a flood of passages started to enter into my mind. A message outline quickly formed and I wrote down an outline sketch and as much of the thoughts as possible. After the keynote was over, I retreated to the speakers’ lounge and, with only about 90 minutes until my workshop, started putting it all together. Another speaker came in, and seeing what was going on, said, “Putting the final touches on your talk?” To which I replied “Not really”. He stopped, and said, “Oh, a total rewrite?” I nodded, and he added, “I’ve also had the Lord do that to me before, and it is both scary and exciting.” Later, after the workshop was over, I had attendees come up and say that it had really ministered to them. They said they had been struggling with the same issues over the last few years, and this had really helped to get a new perspective as well as some encouragement. By steve The Point of No Return by Frank Strickland is a sobering analysis of how our country parallels the cycle of other nations, notably Israel, in a downward spiral leading to judgment, oppression, and finally deliverance. Along the pathway of this decent to judgment certain "marker sins" are prevalent, such as, violence (especially the bloodshed of innocent children), lewdness and promiscuity, and accepting evil as good. I highly recommend Frank's book for anyone who has recently felt that our country is caught in an accelerating downward cycle marked by immorality and rebellion. By Tom Johnson "Mr. Strickland has penned a compelling welI thought it was a well thought out, a well presented case that we as a country are nearing, or at the PONR. It is an interesting companion to the Harbinger book, which was written as a fictional novel, with limited scriptural resources. His book provides much more scriptural backing for the case. I also (and I say this as a pretty conservative guy) thought at times his conservative views, calling out liberal groups, may be off putting. I did really like this point (however). It points how our values are shifting."If you read the Harbinger, but were looking for more biblical backing of the impending fall, this is your book. We wouldn’t cross a railroad track when all the lights are flashing, and the arms are down. Yet, we as Americans continue down this road, with all of the warning signs. If you had not seen the signs before, Mr. Strickland gives us plenty of examples. It’s time to wake up America!

Hill Mr. Strickland has done an excellent job of interweaving current events in the US with Scriptural references and analysis. He clearly identifies the biblical life cycle of a nation and uses God's Word to "walk the reader through" how the United States is traveling on this path. An excellent and sobering analysis that will mobilize Christians in prayer.

About the Author Robert J. Quigg Robertson provides a compelling look at desegregation in Southeast Texas and its implication on the national scene. Robertson gives us an inside look at the impact of segregation in sports (golf in particular), politics and societies social values of the late 40s and early 50s. I especially appreciated the biographical sketches of the major players in the civil rights case. It is an element often lacking in general historical recounts. A view of history which shows how ordinary citizens can have a significant impact on important events in our lives. I recommend this to avid golfers to see how their sport was transformed by these events.Robertson knows his history and tells it through the lives of ordinary citizens. Excellent footnotes.A good companion book to this is "Life is So Good" by George Dawson and Richard Glaubman. A story that also has its roots in East Texas.

Until we were given the ballot this practice prevailed. Now I can play at Crestwood GC on the fairways that I carried a bag 9 holes for 50 cents and 75 cents for 18 holes. By DICKRAN This outstanding and thought provoking book is a 'must-read' by anyone interested in individual sovereignty and freedom. It is very wellwritten and meticulously researched. If you are fed up with the current political democratic system of false alternatives, this book provides a true alternative social organization of economic democracy based upon contract rather than coercion. This alternative natural government provides for proprietary management of all government services. Definitely worth 5 stars!!!!!

In a journey 11-years in the making, Park takes the reader on an extensive holiday to over 30 countries, friendly and hostile, exotic and metropolitan, all infused with the pleasures of life as well as the dangers of the same. Park sets the scene as a young undergraduate army cadet in southern California in the hopes of becoming an army officer during the Global War on Terrorism in 2003. His travels begin with the obligatory university euro trip, backpacking alone in the lands of the old empires and enjoying the fruits of discovery, topping off with the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens, Greece.

After commissioning into the U.S. Army, Park is stationed in Germany and expands his discoveries in Europe and also finds himself serving in Iraq and Afghanistan on almost back-to-back deployments. When not deployed, Park makes the most of his time and enjoys many new exciting experiences to include Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany; new year’s celebrations in Amsterdam, London, and Edinburgh; and reunites with all old friends in Italy—just to name a few.

Returning stateside, Park deploys to Haiti with "Americas Guard of Honor", the 82nd Airborne Division, providing humanitarian assistance to an earthquake torn country. Park continues to expand his democratic empire by returning to Europe to run with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain; travels to Egypt to marvel at the great ancient pyramids; and treks the mystical Andes Mountains of Peru and Patagonia. Park then takes in the beauty and adrenaline pumping adventures of New Zealand and also meets family in Australia.

Pushing the limits, Park treks the awe-inspiring Himalayas, reaching spectacular heights and scenery during the harsh conditions of winter. Finally, he ends his travels enjoying the delicious tastes and exotic grandeur of India; forms everlasting friendships, and even succumbs to some peril in Indochina.

During his almost 10 years of active-duty military service, he has served in the United States, Germany, and has deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Haiti. He holds a bachelor of arts degree from California State University, Fullerton and a master of business administration degree from Eastern Michigan University. He lives in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Interesting perspective from an American traveler with great insight and tips. I love the truthfulness about the joys and struggles of international travel and why the struggles are well worth the risk. It's a great guide to inspire ideas of where to travel next. I have added several locations to my must see list that I never thought I would want to visit by reading this book.

A must read for those who love a light-hearted look at life in France By FrenchVillageDiaries This is another funny instalment of life in rural France for UK comedian Ian, his wife Natalie and his family of misbehaving animals and growing boys. I would recommend reading Ian's first memoir A La Mod before reading this book. After six years of life in the Loire their plans are taking shape, but life never really goes to plan, especially when you find yourself amidst madness like gun wielding neighbours. In his uniquely humorous writing, Ian treats us to all the best bits of his life in France including; medical appointments, vet visits, school life, travelling mishaps and the mad locals. I laughed out loud a lot.For Ian, life is full of battles that have turned him into a real Mr Grumpy. He battles against a family determined to go against his wishes and add more animals, noise and chaos to his life. He battles against himself as he can’t help but miss the noise and chaos when work takes him away from home and then there is the age-old battle of the work/home life balance. Some people are never happy and I doubt peace will ever reign inside Ian’s head especially as his goats appear to have given him gout and his courgettes (zucchini) refuse to produce fruiting female flowers - ha ha ha!Living a similar life I can appreciate the issues behind the humour and while I may feel a bit sorry for poor Ian, his wife Natalie is the real hero of the book for me keeping family life ticking over no matter what is thrown her way. For those of us who love a light-hearted look at the good and the bad of family life in France this book is must read.I was sent a copy of this book by the publisher for an honest review.

Inspirational By reader Another wonderful example of an Englishman abroad, as the writer tries to keep some semblance of normality in his family’s life in the depths of rural France/ Amid the vicissitudes thrown up on all sides, he strides through the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune with the clenched jaw of an Englishman intent on getting things done. He has projects started to earn a living that don’t quite work, constant accident-oriented travels, health hazards, rapacious animals, cranky neighbours and the mockery of his own family to contend with, to name but a few of his problems. But he seems able to bat them off with that stoic, grumpy wit in that befits the tradition of the best of English travel writing, and we see him forging himself a life in France .Very amusing, and hugely enjoyable.
