This book will provide you with a brief, concise overview of the field of anthropology, the study of humanity. Anthropology can be classified into four main groups of study: social, cultural, linguistic, and biological. Archeology is the study of past human cultures through the examination of physical evidence, yet not widely considered a part of anthropology outside the United States. Biological, also known as physical anthropology is an area of study concerned with human evolution and human adaptation. Its main components are human paleontology, the study of our fossil records, and human genetics, which examines the ways in which human beings differ from each other. Also adopted are aspects of human ecology, ethnology, demography, nutrition, and environmental physiology. Anthropology is truly a case of appreciating human diversity. From the physical anthropologist we learn the capabilities for bearing culture that distinguish us from other species. Archaeology, which follows from physical anthropology, reassembles the evolution of culture by examining the physical remains of past societies. Its difference from physical anthropology being its concern with culture rather than the biological aspects off the human species. Archaeologists must assess and analyze their subject culture from accidental remains, which can only provide an incomplete picture. Physical/ biological anthropology is the study of the past and present evolution of the human species and is primarily concerned with understanding the causes of present human diversity. Within this broad definition it includes fields such as human paleontology, evolutionary biology, human genetics, comparative anatomy and physiology, primate behavior, human behavioral ecology, and human biology. Human biology broadly covers the areas of modern human biological variation, human ecology, nutrition and demography. What makes physical/ biological anthropology unique is that it brings all of these areas to bear on our understanding of the human condition. One of the more popular branches of anthropology is social anthropology. Social anthropology is the study of human social life or society, concerned with examining social behavior and social relationships. As the focus of social anthropology is on patterns of social connection, it is commonly contrasted with the branch of anthropology that examines culture, that is, learnt and inherited beliefs and standards of behavior and in particular the meanings, values and codes of conduct. Studying anthropology gives you an insight into what makes people tick and the centrality of culture in motivating social action. Anthropology is based on the study of actual societies over an extended time frame through what is called participant observation. Social anthropologists compare how people live in different societies at different times and places and come up with theories about why people behave in particular ways. A social anthropologist will have a wide knowledge of a range of different societies and social practices, mainly key cultural contexts like marriage, religion and daily life. Anthropology, the study of humanity As anthropologists turn their attention to more sophisticated social contexts, such as state bureaucracies for example, anthropological studies increasingly shed light on how complex social systems are created, established and maintained. Anthropology what does it mean to be human? You'll find the answers within the study of social, cultural, linguistic, and biological anthropologists.

A great overview of anthropology By TFLReader My rudimentary understanding of ancient cultures is limited to what I learned watching Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider so I know that my view is probably somewhat skewed. In actuality, I have always confused archaeology and anthropology and author Mark J. Roberts has written a fantastic overview that sets the record straight, even for a novice like me. Roberts explains what the study of anthropology is by breaking it down into its various facets of biological, linguistic, social, and cultural. He then explains what it means to actually study anthropology to learn more about humanity. A well written and very educational read.
