It is intended as a general history of the American involvement in the post-WW2 Vietnam conflict. Introductory chapters cover the history of the country from antiquity up to the period of European withdrawal or expulsion from what was for some time called "the Third World".Military aspects, domestic dissent and controversy, issues relating to American veterans, and the post-involvement era in the USA are covered. The author's approach would likely have seemed non-controversial at the time of publishing, except perhaps among surviving Birchers and the less educated gung-ho Reagan acolytes. Now, perhaps, a much larger part of the American populace would find her take unduly skeptical of warfare. But it may be that times will change again, and we must hope that this will happen for reasons other than the American populace coming under aerial bombardment themselves.
