A Big Game, a Turbulent Time Nixon was president. The Vietnam War was raging and the civil rights movement was in full swing. Everything in America seemed to be changing and the kids were right in the middle of it. Of course, teenagers still did what they ve always done. They attended high school, went out on dates, worked summer jobs, and drank beer. Many also played sports. In Chattanooga, Tennessee, it had been 30 years since City High had defeated Central High in football. First and Thirty follows the lives of the City football players and their friends as they undergo the trials and tribulations of being in high school during these tumultuous years, while attempting to beat their arch-rivals on the gridiron. On a cold night in November 1970, the maroon-clad seniors of City s Dynamo football team took the field one last time, carrying the indelible lessons that Head Coach Bobby Davis had instilled in them. Would this be the game that would break the spell Central had held over them?

Review Anyone who has an interest in CHS, football, high school life, or Chattanooga and its history should read it." David Jones (former classmate) Chattanooga, TN "You are a gifted writer skillfully weaving our football season with the history happening in the world at that time. Both story lines were so fun to re-live... And many of the football facts were just plain lost or unknown to me. Your book will be one I will always keep and share with my family. Thank you for this gift."- Lee Abelson (former teammate) Chattanooga, TN "I thoroughly enjoyed your book. I found myself recalling high school memories." -Doug O'Neil, Yorba Linda, CA Anyone who has an interest in CHS, football, high school life, or Chattanooga and its history should read it." David Jones (former classmate) Chattanooga, TN I enjoyed every minute of this book. Many of the folks mentioned are friends of mine to this day, some 40 plus years later. Buck's( Buck Buchanan) shares his inner thoughts and insights during the late 60's and 70's from drive-in movie adventures to summer football practices to segregation in Chattanooga. About the Author First and Thirty was Buck's first published book. He felt compelled to write the story about this unique experience in his life. He got the idea to from the last high school reunion he attended where fellow alumina were reminiscing about how their time in high differed from the average high school experience. He was next encouraged to write a book by a freelance consultant who after hearing Buck speak at a sales meeting told him he should write a book and share his sales experience. He was inspired to give writing a try. So in the spring of 2014 the writing of First and Thirty began. Maybe the sales book is next. Carlton Buck Buchanan was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. You'll keep telling yourself "I'll read just one more chapter", then you read 10! You literally feel yourself taken back to Chattanooga in 1969 and 1970. I'm not from there and it still struck a chord with me. For those from the area, this is all the more powerful. Simply an enjoyable read from start to finish.
